Title: what's the best ticket you've ever received?
Post by: akusher on June 15, 2009, 09:28:20 AM
And by best, I mean absurd...

I parked my car for a couple of hours in a public lot on friday and returned a few hours later to find a ticket. I was immediately confused, assuming it was for a meter violation--although the meter period ends after 6 pm--which was when i parked. I looked at the ticket, and got only more confused.

Nothing to do with the meter, it turns out, but expired tags. But I could have sworn my plates expired in July--and last I checked, we're still in June. Nevertheless, the note on the ticket clearly reads: "tags exp'd in may".

Before I even have the chance to walk around my car to confirm the date, I notice the vehicle description at the bottom of the ticket, and within it, a description of my plates: "Expiration Date: jul/2009." Clear as day.

Talk about an open and shut case. Too bad the court doesn't reimburse us lowly citizens for frivolous citations.

When I lived in Cleveland(one of the suburbs called Bay Village), I actually got a ticket for my lawn not being cut, even though I had just cut it the day before and the ticket was written for 2 days later......? :huh

I got pulled on I-80 in 1994 about 50 miles west of Elko NV in my Ford Ranger. I was heading out to CA for ET school and the wind that morning was blowing straight out of the west and I had to keep my foot buried to the floor just to keep the truck at 65mph. Came down into a small valley and all of a sudden I'm doing almost 90mph. Figured I'd keep it in the floor since I was going to pop back up into the wind. Well right as I crested the hill there's a cop sitting in the median. I looked in the mirror as I passed by and say the lights come on, so I just pulled over before the cop even got turned around. Female cop, pretty good looking too, pulls up as I'm leaning against the tailgate with my paperwork in hand. Here's how the conversation went.

Her, "Good morning sir, do you have any idea how fast you were going back there?"
Me, "Yes ma'am, around 80-90mph coming over the hill."
Her, "Clocked you at 84mph."
Me, "yes ma'am, sorry about that but up here on the high ground in this wind I have to keep it to the floor just to maintain 65mph, so when I went down into that little valley I just kept my foot in it."
Her, "OK I can understand that. Where you wearing your seatbelt sir?"
Me, "No ma'am I wasn't."
Her, "Well at least your honest, I'm going to give you a break. Here's a $15 ticket for wasting fuel."
Me, "Wasting fuel? What the hell is that?"
Her, "I can give you the $250 speeding ticket if you like."
Me, "No ma'am, that quite alright, wasting fuel, got it, thank you very much."

That one blew me away.

When I was in college I was coming back into town from visiting my parents for the weekend.  I  was sitting at a stoplight when a cruiser came through the 4-way from a completely different direction.  He made a u-turn and got behind me. As soon as the light turned green he hit his lights.  When he came to the window he said he clocked me at 65 in a 50.  Mind you I'm sitting at a light and he came from a different road.  Not a parallel road but off of a bridge from across the river.  I didn't know radar guns were accurate up to 1/4 mile and through buildings...... :huh

I was a delivery driver in town.  The parking lot the business in had a bar, a nice restaraunt, and a nail place in the same center so parking was *always* a b*tch.  One night I came back from a run, and there was literally no parking in the lot.  Well,  no big deal, I see delivery people park on the street all the time, so I pull out to the main street and hop up on the curb so I'm not impeding traffic.   I run inside(the car is 10 feet from the front door of the business) and grab some deliveries/get change etc etc....taking about 10 minutes tops.  I come outside....and find a $50 ticket on my windshield! For "obstructing the flow of traffic".  Now if I did the crime blah blah blah whatever, but I had seen trucks/cars/etc do the same damn thing for much much longer than I was there.  It was just the nerve to give me a ticket 10 feet outside of the store, *with* the businessses cartop on my car that got me.  A simple hoot inside that I couldn't park there would have been easier, quicker, and less of a pain than writing a ticket.  Not to mention the guy that monitors the parking around town ate in the store atleast once a week.

Back when I bartended on campus one night I found an awesome parking spot right against the building near the dumpster where no one could hit me.  At the end of the night I found a ticket on the windshield for parking within 10 feet of a dumpster on an alley.  It turns out the bar owner had recently called the city to complain about people blocking his dumpster at night.

When I was about 17-18 I didn't get the ticket, but got pulled over for no front plate, when the officer told me this is why I was pulled over I told him I know it was there earlier, maybe it fell off, luckily I decided to ask if I could take a look myself, so I get out of the car and walk to the front, and what do you know, there's my plate clear as day in the front of my car, the cop still ran my name and everyone else who was in the car with me though, which I thought was kinda BS.

Driving home from a club one night, I got pulled over in central London. It was female cop on her own and there were four of us in the car so the first thing she did was call for back up. Next thing I know there's about 5 cop cars surrounding us. I get out the car and answer the usual "is this car your's" questions after which I enquire as to why I'd been pulled over.

Her response was - and I quote - "I saw a bottle of water on your rear parcel shelf and I always associate that with drugs".  :huh

At this point the 5 carloads of additional cops start looking a bit sheepish, but she insists on breathalyzing me (I hadn't touched a drop) and searching me, my friends and the car. Eventually, and much to her disgust, she finds nothing and is forced to let us go.

Got pulled over the other day Cause the a cop thought my window tints were too dark. went like this:

Cop: Afternoon sir may I see your Lic, registaratiom and proof on insurance.....
Me: OK *I get it out of glove box and hand to the officer*
Cop: Do you have any idea why i pulled you over?
me: No. Why?
Cop Your window tints are too dark. Thats illegal!
Me: Oh, I'm pretty sure they are legal. When I had them installed I specifically  asked for "Legal Tints"
Cop: Hmmm, No those are Obviously illegal! you know people will tell you one thing and do another, I'm sure the installer put darker tints on. I'm going to have to Check them with my meter.
Me: OK, but I am pretty sure they are legal.
*I roll my window half way up*
*So he sticks his little meter on there  holds it for a second then pulls it away to reasd the screen, and gets a pissed off look.  He stares at the screen for a second more, then looks at the car, back at the screen. Then puts the meter back on the window but further forward then before. Checks it. slides it back to a diffrent spot checks it again.*
Me: Are the legal?
Cop: *mumbles* They are legal. wait here.
*He walks back to his squad car for what seemed like forever and comes back.
Cop: I'm giving you this written warning for these tinted windows sign here
*I sign*
Me: are my tints illegal?
*he hand me my warning*
Cop: No, Have a nice day.
* he turns and walks off
* I drive away confused  :huh

I have had numerous stops, only a couple of tickets, the most memorable my roomate and i were coming back from Bozeman MT ( 160 mi ) from Billings.....11:00pm at night my roomate says " there is a cop behind us." i just looked at him and said shut up, he responded "no seriously."  So i look in my rear view mirror and sure enough blinking headlights and the red/blue party lights.   I pull over and the officer who was a MHP walks up and and does the usual......"Do u know why i pulled u over?"  i say "probably speeding."  He then goes to his car then comes back about 10 min later and goes "heres your ticket....i clocked u at 94, the speed limit is 75."  i then asked....."were u sitting off the over pass, because i never passed you and i didn't see any other cars going the opposite direction." he was like "yep, i had to hit about 110 to catch up, BTW your last name is Kostelecky right?" i was like ya....why? he then asked if was related to a FORMER patrolman with the same last name....i told him that was my DAD, he then sat there for bout 30 mins talking about how my dad taught him during accident recreation school.  long story short.......still got the ticket, 40bucks.

Well, I didn't end up getting ticket out of it, but last fall I had an interesting encounter with law enforcement.

It turns out that if you're a long-haired, bearded, hippie-lookin' guy who drives at a reduced speed around the airport at the state capitol, pulling into all of the out-of-the-way nooks and crannies, repeatedly stopping to use your binoculars, repeatedly going back for a "second look", and periodically tossing (gently) a small rectangular package out towards the fence before speeding away, and parking in a somewhat concealed location to watch that package, it draws the attention of airport security, who notifies the local sheriff.

It may have made a difference that the military uses that airport too?  Not sure...

And I ended up with the Sheriff's business card, and an agreement that if I needed/wanted him to swing over and flash his lights to keep traffic clear of me, to just give him a holler, hehe!

No ticket, but the Sheriff seemed to think I was pretty "cool".

Had one almost exactly like the first 1/4 of your story the other day.  Was driving along, minding my own business, and saw a cruiser pull up aside me in the next lane, then back off, pulled behind me and lit me up.  So, I pull over into a near parking lot, and the cop comes up.  Conversation goes like this:

Cop: Afternoon, you know why I pulled you over today?
Me: No, sir, no idea.
Cop: Your front windows have tint on them, that's illegal.
Me: Oh, really?  This is my dad's truck, I'm sorry.
Cop: Can I see your license, registration, insurance?
Me: *I hand him my license, go to get my registration and stuff*
Cop: How old are you?
Me: 16.
Cop: *slight pause* I'm just gonna let you go.  Next time, just pull off to the side of the street, not the parking lot.  Have a good day.
Me: Thank you, you too.

Mind you, I didn't even give him my registration or anything.  He just...let me go.  I think he wanted to see who was driving more than the windows.  My dad got that window tint put on a few years back, and this is the first time it's ever been a problem.  He was a nice guy, though.  *sigh*  I just think the cops up where I live have nothing better to do.  First time I got pulled over, by the way.  Yay me.

The cops around my town are pretty laid back.  They can all be found at a local gas station/convenient store at the exact SAME time...so I never worry about them.

Speed limit is 30mph on all of the streets in town...ok.  So here I am driving to work doing about 45, as I was running late.  Look in my rear view and there's a city police car behind me.  I sit there thinking "Crap...what a day to get my first ticket."  so I slow down to about 35mph and act normal, waiting for him to turn his lights on.  Few seconds later I see him drive on by me in a no passing lane.  He then speeds away..still no lights.  I finally lose sight of him, but about 10 minutes later I pass the same squad car at a different convenient store.  I guess he was just really, really hungry.

I only got one ticket ever, for parking a motorcycle in a place where everyone parked their bikes. I think they must have issued several hundred parking tickets to bikers that day. There were plenty of times, I should have got a ticket. Like the time I was heading home on my motorcycle through the back streets of Dublin when I saw a bike cop coming towards me. I knew he would stop me and I wasn't in the mood, so I tried to lose him before he got turned around. I did but he got lucky and finally spotted me. He was good and mad and knew I tried to lose him. I denied it politely. So he searched me and checked out the bike for defects. Eventually he told me was going to charge me with dangerous driving, breaking a red light etc. It was all BS. But if he had been more thorough he could have got me for my tax being out of date. :rofl I never heard anymore. He was bluffing.

Mention of the tinted windows incident reminded me of my friend who drove a black BMW with tinted windows. I called it a pimp-mobile. One day he was driving home and needed to change lanes to exit. He found a gap in the traffic. Unfortunately it was the middle of a joint police/army escort of a huge cash shipment. The army guards big cash deliveries in this country. They saw a sinister black BMW with tinted windows join their convoy so suddenly he was stopped and surrounded by troops carrying Steyr AUG assault rifles. He didn't make that mistake again.  :uhoh

Most silly ticket I ever got was a parking fine for parking my motorbike next to another motorbike, next to a bicycle park on a pavement in a busy town centre which was 100ft wide.  The bike next to me didn't get a ticket, I did for "blocking the pavement".  A 100ft wide pavement.  Uh-huh.

However, the best one I ever didn't get a ticket for was.......years ago I had my first proper motorcycle (well, ish), a Suzuki RGV250.  I had it about a week and was using an excuse to go see a mate of mine in Portsmouth, I was on the M27 (freeway) heading for Southampton and traffic had cleared to the point of being non existant......so......as you do, new vehicle, fast vehicle, you wanna see what she'll do, right?

So I opened this bike up, held 130mph for about 5 miles.....brilliant......and my exit is coming up so I throttled back and took the slip road off the motorway (freeway) at legal speeds again.  At the end of the sliproad is a police car waiting for me, fella gets out of the car and waves me in......

Copper: "Good evening sir.  We have received a report of a motorcycle travelling at excessive speeds on the M27."

Me with poker face: "Well I haven't seen him."

The fella looked blankly at me for a moment then actually laughed, told me to keep it down a bit and let me go on my way.

Disco biscuits? :huh  Got popped by a SP on the air base for doing 35 in a 25 on a bicycle.  Funniest thing I have heard from a cop

Cop: "Do you know how fast you were going?"
Me looking for a speedo on the handlebars: "Um, not really."
Title: Re: what's the best ticket you've ever received?
Post by: cpxxx on June 19, 2009, 10:54:51 AM
I was stopped on my motorcycle for speeding, the cop asked how fast I though I was going. Truthfully I told him I didn't know. What I didn't tell him was the the speedo cable broke a long time ago and I couldn't know. Well you were doing 90 said the Garda. 'No way', said I, now realising he hadn't a clue either because it was only about 70 if that. He left telling me he as going to prosecute but he never did. In truth I was only stopped to check whether the bike was stolen or I was wanted or a drug dealer or something. I was driving through a rough area at the time, hence the speed. That was quite common for me. Stopped for speeding but in reality the cops were only really interested in whether the bike was stolen or I was up to something. On one occasion the post office was robbed a short time previously and frankly the way I rode a bike, I always looked like I was getting away! But I never got a ticket, even though I deserved one.

In my previous post I mentioned my one and only parking ticket. I remembered why now. It was an anti terrorist drive. At one stage everyone parked their bikes on the central pavement part of O'Connell street in Dublin. But one day a loyalist terrorist, that is a pro British terrorist down from Northern Ireland planted a teeny tiny bomb on a motorcycle to try and terrorise us. Well the powers that be decided scare off the terrorists by ticketing everyone on the street. I guess it worked. They never came back! :rofl That really qualifies as a silly ticket.

On I-70 west bound about 50 east of Hays, Kans, going about 72 mph on 70 mph speed limit.  As driving with the flow of traffic (some going faster than me) and state trooper was on the east bound and did a U-turn on the median onto the west bound. He was about ½ miles ahead of me the time he did that.  I was on the inside land so I slow down and switch lands and pass him going about 60 mph.  About a 1 min later his lights turn on and the next thing I notice he is after me.  Wonder what the hell I did.
He told me that he clocked me going 80 mph.  I ask at what time did he clocked me going that fast because I was on cursed control going 71-72 mph.  Pissed that I question him about where he clocked me he said, “I clocked you going 80 when you where behind me!” and “..that my cruise control was mound function and speedometer was not reading right!”  Then a asked him if he has a radar that can read any mechanical problems on cars?  Yea, that one almost got me in jail.

It's February, about 20o, 11 at night and I'm going home from the movies on a motorcycle with almost no gas.  I'm speeding a bit, trying to stay out of the wind and hope I get to the gas station before I run dry and I come up behind a local cop car.  I slow down, they slow down.  I slow down more, they slow down more.  They finally pull to the side and I pass and get pulled over.

I get licence checked and what not and a local sheriff's car shows up.  Deputy gets out and starts telling me how I'm going to jail and they have me now and puts me in the back of his nice warm car, losing his hat in the process.  Closed the door on my foot while I was trying to get it inside past the cage.  Keeps telling me how much trouble I'm in and how I'm going to jail.

I'm listening to his radio and there is lots of chatter going on.  Other assorted police cars start coming by.  Local, 2 different counties, State Troopers.  "No, not him."

Turns out they had been chasing someone on a bike all over the back roads in the hills for hours and thought they got him when they pulled me over.  15 or 20 cars drove by to check me out.  Different bike and a different helmet.  I got warmed up, let go, and made it to the gas station.

Second.  Comming home from a show after 2am I come over a rise.  Speed trap.  I'm doing about 78 in a 65 and pull over.  "I detect the smell of alcohol."

My response, "I'm covered in it."

They like to throw beer at the end of the show.  I'm pretty much soaked.  Get out and do the field sobriety test.  "Follow the pen."

No problems and he lets me go without even a warning.

I get out of lots of tickets.  Always roll down all the windows so they can see you.  Be polite and offer any more information than they want.  Don't be an avocado.

Tickets I did get is a different story.
