Title: Any idea what kind of plane this is?? Is it even a plane?
Post by: 1Boner on June 15, 2009, 07:30:33 PM
Kind of obvious its Russian, but I can't seem to find any info on it.

I've looked on Airliners.Net and still couldn't find anything. (a reeeeal lot of stuff there.)

I also looked up the photographer and still came up with zip.

Kind of cool lookin.

Good find. At first I thought it was another old soviet era craft, I cant remember the name but it was a real monster!. had like 6 engines mounted on a forward wing. the concept was that it would "skim" the surface of the ocean at high speed carrying troops and our equipment. I'm at work now but. ill try to find info on it later if someone else doesn't beat me to it.
The history chnl did a episode on it, the desighner was relegated to siberia IIRC.

The thing was HUGE! they built 1 or 2 and it did fly. I think the prototypes were smaller versions than what they wanted to finally build which is impressive.
The soviets really liked building things on a much larger scale and they had some pretty whacked out ideas that actually made it off the drawing board

EDIT: found it! here is a link http://www.globalaircraft.org/planes/lun_ekranoplan.pl

It was called the ekranoplan Big motha! too

I seem to recall an artists rending on the cover of Popular Mechanics back in the day.  The general classification of such an aircraft is a WIG. (Wing In Ground-effect)

That looks pretty much exactly like the WIG in Metal Gear Solid 3 with the wings broken off, that's all.

it may be ugly to some, but the sheer "oddness" of it makes it incredibly cool. One thing's for sure, the Soviets came up with some really neat looking stuff.

The photos of that big crazy bird with the wings on and it in action make it not ugly at all.
