I noticed that drop tanks for the typhoon weren't on Pyro's 1.04 item list. Just wanted to know if drop tanks for typhoon are a consideration or are they definitely not going to happen and we should stop asking . Oh and if the answer is never, then why not ?

In a patch for 1.04 then ? I seem to recall a pic from a Squadron Signals book that showed a typhoon with 2 DT and 4 rockets (not a bad compromise, I think).
Cheers
-
Vosper were those drop tanks, or just tanks ?
-
I'm fairly certain they were DT - I had gone to a hobby shop to look for a Sig Sqn book on the Lanc, and browsed thru the Typhoon/Tempest book (and yes, the pic I recall was the Typhoon) and it was the 2 tanks and 4 rkts.
I dont see as it would make sense to have ground attack armament installed with fixed "shoot here to blow me up" targets hanging off the wings - even by the standards of the air force that (tried) using the Battle (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Cheers
PS - I lived at a marina for a year, and one old chap there was in France during the start of the war, flying the Battle, and "got" a 109 when it flew into trees trying to catch him as he was dodging at extremely low level.
-
I've seen that pic too vosper, in fact somebody posted it once on the BB. But they don't look like they drop . If you have some pics, or some data please share it .

Am I alone in thinking that 3 consecutive "No time in this release"'s means "No, not now, not ever"?
The Spit V has also been waiting for tanks for so long people seem to have given up asking.
I can't help feeling that the 190 or Pxx wouldn't be ignored in this way.
-
I think the question is whether the Typhoon tanks could be dropped.
-
What about those tanks makes them look like they don't drop? Even the Spitfire "slipper" tanks were droppable, although it was offical policy not to unless it was essential.
I have never seen a reference to the Typhoon tanks being fixed, in sact I have seen them reffered to as drop tanks in many books.
AFAIK, the only fixed external tank on a British fighter was the belly tank on the Meteor.
-
The Mk V lacks the 250lb bombs on the wings too.
I seem to recall that the RAF never used rockets on the Spitfire during WW2(testing only iirc) - yet the 1942 F.IX has them, as well as the "E wing" and strangest of all, a "300 Liter Drop Tank" which is German!!!
-
Nashwan, if I meant never, I would have said never. There's no need to be speculative or conspiratory. It's just simply what things take importance over the others.

Juzz,
The British had a 300 litre drop tank as well.

From what I can see, the Typhoons drop tanks were the same type as the torpedo tanks fitted to the Spitfire, which were dropable. The Typhoons tanks were fitted in the same points that also carried bombs. If the bombs were dropable (anyone want to dispute that? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) ), why would the tanks have been fixed?
Superfly, I didn't mean to imply a conspiracy against the Typhoon. Fitting drop tanks to it wouldn't make it some sort of uber plane. There is no reason to restrict it that way.
It's just simply what things take importance over the others
Thats exactly what I meant. US and Luft. make up the majority of AH customers. Naturally they are the priority. I just think that if time couldn't be found in 3 releases, it's probably so far down the list that there will never be time. There will always be something more important than drop tanks for the Typhoon.
-
So the British converted to metric measurements for that one drop tank huh? I figure you mean the 50 gallon torpedo tank.
I have seen a photo of a P-47D with a German 300l drop tank on each wing - they had filled them with oil and were using them as home-made napalm canisters! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
