So, I'm wondering if any of you know of any music composition software besides Finale (seeing as how it's about $600). I've got a couple of pieces I want to transpose, and some ideas I'd love to compose, any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

I dunno if it's "composition software," but I use the copy of WaveStudio that came with my Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS for any sound editing and capture that I do. I used it once to compile a mix song for one of my ex's talent show performances.
Pick "Application" and it's the third one down. (http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=1&subCatID=205&prodID=4915&prodName=Audigy%202%20ZS&subCatName=Audigy&CatName=Sound+Blaster)

Well, as you seem not to have the ultimate "professional" demands (which will always result in a very profesisonal price", you might check out FL studio:

50$-300$ depending on version.

Thanks! I'm trying out the trial right now, and it seems to be perfect. Much appreciated, Lusche.

I always used cakewalk.

Most professionals seem to use Finale or Sibelius. As an amateur, I prefer Sibelius as more user friendly as well as very powerful.

My musician brother-in-law uses this.

Mac users get the free garageband which is surpringly versatile. I'd play with it more if I had time.

Sibelius or FL Studio...although FL Studio's stock sounds are very amateurish...I use FL Studio with 3rd party synths

yeah for what you want i recommend FL (used to be fruity loops when it was free)
but a bit higher up i recommend buying a good sequencer and running with midi into Adobe Audition
ive got a Korg ESX-1 and its great, pressure sensitive keys and i find it easy for me to make my loops, melodies, beats and what not on it and finr tune it with Audition
i prefer it this way because it is easier to put down melodies etc and turn em into loops my tapping them out with ya fingers like on a piano
rather than constantly playing it out and changing it just using trial and error with the waveform
im just waiting for the comp-a-glove to be made
its a glove with buttons on the finger tips that you can load notes loops samples etc on it and tap out melodies anywhere and save em.
so for example your driving to work and ya get a good tune in ya head and ya want to remember it just put the glove on tap it out and save it
easy
i just find the analog input easier when working with original melodies etc

Just so you know...all of these software programs have the capability of taking MIDI input...meaning you can buy a USB/MIDI keyboard and record anything you want. I love it. Nice stuff Noir
