Title: About My Dad
Post by: thndregg on June 20, 2009, 08:06:18 AM: Flayed1 and I just received word in the wee hours of this moring that our dad, David, died while working at a mining site near Bethel, Alaska. Little is known at this point as to how he died, although we strongly suspect a stroke or heart condition. He would have been 62 at the end of this year. We will know more as time goes on. <S>

Post by: thndregg on June 20, 2009, 09:52:45 AM: Thanks guys. In some ways, I'm not overly shocked by this because our dad was always the stubbornly independent sort, as in he was going to do what he did despite warnings and concerns about his health by those closest to him.

The hard part was just a bit ago as I was telling my two oldest children (10 year-old Joseph and 8 year-old Kyle). That's where the tears shed a bit for me because-well- that was thier grandpa- their buddy that would bike ride with them, canoe down the river (practically in the backyard), and so on. He never was that close with his own children, but perhaps age & wisdom finally did have some effect on him once the grandkids started showing up on the scene.

Thanks, bud. Yes, just east from Bethel is a place called Nyac. We used to live there for six months back in the early eighties when Dad was working for a gold mining company there. No roads to it. It's almost as remote as you can get in this country.

Anyway, the mining project there has been resurrected under a new outfit of which Dad had been hired on as the head geologist for. He was in the process of getting crew & equipment lined up and put together when this happened. From what I learned so far, he headed out on his four-wheeler to where three guys were putting some equipment together, and at some point these guys needed to go back someplace to retrieve some tools. When they returned a short time later, he was found slumped over on the four-wheeler. They tried to revive him, and apparently there was a doctor that showed up shortly after, but it was too late.

We're certain it was blood pressure related because he had been taking it while here at home and doing relatively well. He had been to the doctor before, but was very tight-lipped about what was discussed as to his condition, seemingly in a denial state. From what we understood from him when he shipped off to Alaska, he discovered that airport security at some point had gone through his duffle bag, and in so doing his blood pressure meds were crushed. He made arrangements to have some shipped to him, and so there was a significant gap of time where we think the lapse in taking his meds contributed to his passing.

He was and will always be my only hero in life.

We sat around the fire, watched our collective seven kids roast marshmallows, drank (more than we should've, I guess), cussed & discussed about Dad & current events. We both wanted to play Aces High last night, but we sat there for the longest time still undecided. Kinda bummed, but enjoying the peaceful evening. Eventually Flayed went home, and I logged on.

When you get down to it, this is a pretty cool community. I was heartened by the lot of you guys as we ran a mission last night. The laughs, the crude remarks & jokes really helped a lot!
