Ok... those of us that grew up in a time when video games consisted of Atari and Intellivision, played wargames with little cardboard counters, with rulebooks that made the dictionary seem like a comic book, and maps that were highly detailed and covered with grids of "hexes".
If you remember such a time... what were your favorite wargames?
Mine are (in no particular order)
Axis and Allies - (Milton Bradley) - I still have the original version, and the new revised one... now teaching my son to play.
Rise and Fall of the Third Reich (Avalon Hill) - I still have 2 complete copies of this one
World War II - (SPI) - Still have a copy of this too
Submarine! - (Avalon Hill) - Was my first wargame
Kingmaker - (Avalon Hill) - Great game of backstabbing and shifting alliances!
Star Fleet Battles - (ADB) - Still have the rulebooks for this somewhere.
Richthofen's War - (Avalon Hill) - GREAT WW1 Air combat boardgame!

Risk - board game

Risk - board game
Hehe... I remember playing Risk with my cousins on holidays when we all got together. Ended up with all of us being mad at each other, and I seem to remember a fistfight on one occasion.

Does Battle Ship count?

Oh man! I remember playing that until like 4am in my barracks room on a C64!!! But... thats technically a video game, I was referring to games that dont have a power cord :)

Axis and Allies, that game is insane, i remember me and some friends played a 9 hour long game. it was epic.
-
I remember playing games that lasted for many weeks, 1 attack/movement phase, (game turn) a day after school... One game of Third Reich, we had 12players, Individual players for most of the countries... Started at
the 1939 scenario, and let everyone make their own alliances/plots... LOL, it was fun calling buddies after the game setup, and plotting the backstab of your game neighbors... LOL!!!!
European politics of the 30s.. LOL!

We played A&A so much, we all knew the map and what you had to do in the first 2 turns to win. It got to where we knew after 2 or 3 rounds of play who had already won, and who was skee-rewed. So.... WE MADE OUR OWN MAPS!!!! We started with adding lines and repainting the original board game so that it looked like it was in 1939, instead of 1942. After that, we moved on to painting up big sheets of cardboard with mythical maps... but the biggest and last one we did was on a 4X8 sheet of plywood!!!!

Aces High II
Brothers in Arms series.
-
Domination for me - to the extent that myself and the people I played with, collected the little models of ww2 tanks etc, redid the rules and played ww2 on the same board - which was later copied onto a much bigger map (of the world) and then played on that. So much fun making alliances, then breaking them at the time that was good for you and not so good for them lol......
I still have the game and tanks somewhere at home lol....

Axis & Allies
Memoir '44
Risk
Risk 2120 (I always forget the exact number lol)
Risk (and it's far-future version) always was the best for me and my buddies. I would always get stomped. The alliances were pure hell. You could never tell who was going to help you or stab you, because everyone tried to look like they were helping you and hurting everyone else to whoever they were taliking to in private at the time. Usually I would get forced into a dead-end last stand in Australia because I never did handle multi-front wars well. At times I would change up and attempt to have as much of Asia as possible, but I think what always went best for me was a rapid conquest of South America, followed by a massive defensive build up on the border with North America, followed by a slow, grueling campaign through Africa before finally participating in the absolute bloodbath that was always in Europe. Never try to claim Europe. Just fight over it. After reaching the Middle East I would slowly force my way through the less fortified back nations of the other players and work my way up through Siberia to cut off the powerhouse building up in America off from sending a Blitzkreig in Asia by forming a treaty with whoever had more forces in the area, Building a huge force there, then slowly reducing my activity in Europe while maintaining my forces there, before making a huge buildup in Central America in preparation for a suprise conquest of Australia, which is never a small feat late-game. Suddenly a lightning war would break the bloody stalemate in Europe and everyone would try to call on their allies to try to hold something resembling front lines and retreat paths. I, however, would consolidate my forces into the various entryways into Africa, South america, and Austrailia, and go on the defenseletting my country bonuses replenish my defending armies whilst I watch the others rip each other to shreds in eastern Europe. Once most of the forces there are tired out and weak, I launch a multi-front assault from Africa and storm Western Europe, Launch from Australia and cut off America from the weakened forces in Asia, and whittle the defenders in Mexico from South America. Once those battles begin, it is only a matter of time before the weakened players either start to add their own forces to my army or take up defensive positions to guard my supply routes, or simply quitting and awarding me the 3 territories they still have. From there on out it is me vs. the player who held America all game. Then someone's mom calls and the game ends right there.
Pisses me off.

axis & allies hands down.
my brother and me would have epic 2 player games where the whole goal was to amass enough heavy bombers to obliterate the opposition on 1 turn.

While A&A was the king while I was in the Navy and In College, We had a lot of fun with Battletech as well. A little too much geek-work with all the miniatures, but still a good time.

2nd edition. heavy bombers is a technology advancement just like long range aircraft, etc. Heavy bomber roll 3 or 4 dice per plane per attack. I also have the cheesy PC version.
-
What are these boardgames you speak of? In my youth, no one played good boardgames; we played Nintendo 64's Perfect Dark and Playstation's Street Fighter #. Board games were for poor people ( I went to an expensive private school for lower and middle school, and was one of those poor people. I didn't have anyone to play anything with. Me and my poor underused Sega Genesis 3.) I wish I could find someone near me to play these games with, and a copy of any of those games. You people are lucky.

There's a board game version of Aces High II ?
Just read through the thread :lol
I played one a lot at a friend's house, don't recall what the name was, but you had what was like about 100 pieces of soldiers...etc, and you had to move them around, and there were only certain ways you could win or something like that. I think it was called like "revolutionary _____"
I don't really know, I haven't played the game in atleast 3 years.

You should try the edition that is out now. All the "house rules" that we used to use... most we came up with on our own... are in the rulebook as optional now. And we thought WE were the only ones who added to the game :x
They added hidden sub movement, offshore bombardment, destroyers, artillery, paratroopers... and now all the pieces look like units from the country they go with. Panzers, Zeros, P-38's... Same basic game we played back then... just a lot more goodies.

I don't think we're talkin' bout the same A&A anymore....

B17-Queen of the Skies- avalon hill.
Was cool cuz it was better single player. Played that forever. Had Air Force but didn't have any friends interested enough to try it.
-
Wow this brings back memories , Squad Leader as a kid had epic battles that lasted weeks to finish and of course B-17 Qween of the skys was great as a solo game . wooden Ships and Iron Men was a blast , Richtofens war is another great one . Lots of time spent playing these games and had loads of fun .
Nutte :x

The only games that qualify that I've played are Risk, Battletech (although I did play Aerotech once or twice, I'm not gunna count it), and Axis & Allies.
Axis & Allies is clearly the best. 8 hour games were not uncommmon, and the regular players didn't complain about the length of the games, we kind of looked forward to it. And we also changed some of the rules around... like paratroopers and added 6 techs to bring the total to 12. Unlike Aces High 2, we had a nuke :lol . It was fun.
-

Sounds like you played the same way we did. After my friend lost Australia he decided to play a game of 'Global Thermonuclear War' and wiped out the entire board. That was the last time we ever played.

Axis & Allies

It has changed a lot since the original. But its still a great game. What they did was listen to the gamers that played it, and added the stuff that made sense... and that a lot of people were doing anyway.
Hehe... we actually numbered all the sea spaces on our old A&A map so you could keep track of hidden sub movement on a separate sheet. Made subs really lethal. So we have to add destroyers. We used ship counters from another game.
And yea... we tried nukes too. Didnt work well. Once someone got them, and actually used them. Everyone would get mad and quit. So we ended up ditching that idea.

Squad Leader (was awesome).
Cry Havoc, Siege, Samuraļ
7th Fleet
I also had Air Force and Over the Reich but my friends weren't much interested.
