Last month I was in Connecticut working for General Dynamics on some sub equipment. Just wondering if there is a way to enlist making good money. I know officers inlist with a degree. He should be able to get in as an E-3 with his education (and there are some other ways to skip E-1 and E-2).
Using my information (Married, 3 kids, living in Dallas) as an E-3 I'd be looking at $3,235.08 as my monthly take home.
It would drop considerably if the guy is single.

You enlist making the same money as everyone else in your pay grade. Maybe they will give you one stripe free out of basic, with a pay raise. There are various bonus arrangements, mostly with the Army and Marines. And mostly with the jobs they need to fill. I was in USAF and can vouch for it being a fine organization. Even better, while your friend serves, he can finish his college degree.
Its an honorable life. You just aren't going to get rich doing it. And neither will you ever worry about Medical, Dental, food on the table....ect.

If the reason he is not considering college is financial then he might consider ROTC. Going enlisted only makes sense if he does not want to go back to college now but wants the option in the future.

As a mechanic, if he has any interest in flying Helicopters, there's always the possibility of him going as a CWO.
I'm an independant contractor for the National Guard, so if he wants any real info you can always put him in touch with me.

Marines don't offer any bonuses, The Army, Navy and Air Force offer pretty decent sized bonuses, I recently enlisted in teh Army, i got $7,000 cash bonus.
