Title: What is this gun?
Post by: osage on August 18, 2001, 07:50:00 AM
I honestly have no idea.  It could belong to the P-38J or the Japanese twin engine job (the Japanese nickname translates as "dragon slayer" - I forgot exactly what it is   :( ). Or even a P-51.

Took this shot on Monday    :)

Looks like a 37mm cannon (Ho-203 I think it was?) from the Ki-45 to the left.

Yeah, where else?    :)

I was lucky enough to get in on a tour.  I'm still walking on air.    :) They're in the process of moving the collection to the fantastic new facility at Dulles, and they have changed their focus from "ultradetailed painstaking perfect restoration for the next 400 years" to just cleaning 'em up and making them look like they did when they were taking care of business.

The Lightning's paint job ain't never gonna be Reno Air Races shiny like the current aircraft in the "big show" at the main museum.  It's gonna be kinda beat up.  I support this refocus wholeheartedly.

Yeah, that must be a 37mm cannon.  Pretty scary looking.  KI-45 would be a great addition to AH.

Cheers,

37 mm? looks like its belt feed and I dont think 37 mm would come with such action... this wire frame type drum is also kinda puzzling... anyway I have no idea what this is  :)

From my copy of "Rapid Fire" by Tony Williams it looks just like the Ho-203 (37 x 112R) it even has the bird cage to contain the fixed length belt feed.  (pages 267 & 271 and without cage on page 175)

Yeah, looks like it's next in line with the P-38J and the Mooney.

After reading up on it a bit, it looks like it would be easy meat in the MA    :( .

Allied nickname was "Nick"  :)

Here's a better shot.
