Title: F4U-4B
Post by: Tom5572 on June 30, 2009, 11:50:30 AM
I was doing a little searching and found the -4 and -4B were delivered at the same time, June 1945.  Both saw combat.  Just because I like the -4, I would like to see the 4 Hispano armed sister the -4B.  This plane would have to be perked and heavily so (more than the Tempest, I would think).
From my non-coding mind, it would not be too hard to make this, combine the -1C and the -4 and there you go.  Just a thought.  If I am wrong about it serving in WWII then forget it.
I really like flying the Hogs and would like to see the set completed.  Thanks.

If it meets HTC inclusion criteria, then by all means I think it should be added.  The question is knowing I can't afford it perkwise, do I really want to get killed by one? :uhoh

The F4U-4B was initially a separate production block set aside for the Royal Navy. It was basically intended to be an F4U-4 modified for the Royal Navy (as was the case with the F4U-1B, the Vought designation for the Royal Navy's Corsair Mk.II, modified from the F4U-1A with clipped wings because of the shorter hangar decks of British carriers at the time). None were delivered (or even produced) before the war ended.

After the war Vought began production of the F4U-4C, armed with four 20mm cannon. By this time the US Navy reclaimed the 4B designation as the British order was canceled with the end of the war, and began applying it to the F4U-4C instead (adding to the confusion).

NO cannon-armed F4U-4s were even flying in the States before Japan's surrender, to say nothing of seeing combat in squadron strength.
