Still increasing among kids and adults. My solution, force all fast food chain to close by 7 p.m, non of this "open till 1 a.m." and make them to make healthyer foods. Have all restaurants to cut trans fat, carbohydrates ect, and enough of make new junk food, pop, and other foods that causes people to be fat.
-
Let them get fat..."survival of the fittest"......its natural selection :D

it's more their lack of activity, i think, than it is the food they eat.
i heard that in gym class, they don't even do calisthenics anymore/? or at least not every day?? what the hell's up with that?

I worry about my diet, worry about eating too late, worry about heart disease, worry about not getting enough exercise, worry about getting too little sleep... Lately, I've started to worry that i worry too much.
Now I'm 32 and have an ulcer.
Hooray for poetic justice.

I think its a mixture of both, in my county the school board has canceld all sport for middle schoolers, and for High School all sport have been canceled exept for Varsity. You are only required to take Gym for 2 years then u can be lazy and sit in one spot for 7 hours exept for when you go to lunch and swtich classes.
Plus they food they serve at my high school is crap, I've heard people say (including staff) that the food at my school tastes worse then McDonalds (personally tho i love mcdonalds). But school food sucks.
My solution, force all fast food chain to close by 7 p.m, non of this "open till 1 a.m."
No, that would suck because i am hungry when i get off work at 10:30pm so i like to go by Checkers or McDonalds. Honestly, i think it's the peoples responsibility to choose what they eat, if they want to get fat and obiese be my guest! I'm lucky tho, i'll trying to GAIN 20lbs rather then loose lol!

i'm 47. ate what i wanted, when i wanted to.
no diseases, no knee problems, no kidney problems, although i do have sciatica flare up every so often.......but that was originally from me falling off the back of a tow truck.
the biggest thing with kids and not letting them get fat is
1) get their butts OUTSIDE and ACTIVE
2)if they're aslready showing some weight problems, then get them eating leaner foods
3)try to teach them from your mistakes.
my brother is teaching his daughter this way. she's 9, and super/crazy active.....and is outside whenever she can be. when i visit, she wears me out. she's like an energizer bunny......but then my brother brought her up that way. he tries to keep her eating healthier than he did, but lets her have what she wants sometimes...even if it is considered "junk" food.

yea, see..that's bad. it breeds laziness into them.
you don't necessarily need to do sports. but like i said.....we used to be doing SOMETHING during gym everyday. calastencs, the volleyball, dodgeball, baseball, football, just general running around......but SOMETHING.........that's all it really takes i think.......

Blame video game consoles and PCs.
Since the appearance of the NES, you see fewer kids outside running around and more kids indoors with overdeveloped thumbs and asspadding.

I was active in track from middle school to college. By the time i finished school, i was 180 lbs. and 1% body fat. (That was in 2001) From that time till now i let my self go and eat junk food, fast food crap and lots of pop. A month ago i was over 240 lbs and heading to some series trouble if i don't do anything.
So i stop drink pop, eat unlimited veg and fruits, cut on carbohydrates, starting to run and drink lots of water. in one month i lost 25 lbs and still loosing. I have more energy, sleep better and having a better attitude with life. (oh, sex gotten better)
It is that easy but you need to have the "i want to" attitude to loose weight. I do understand that there are some ppl who are naturally big or have some e medical issue that nor matter what they do, the weight keeps building up.

Got a good friend of mine I've known for about 10 years..
He and his family are the classic fat, out of shape, nearly obese typical American family..
Their kids as well as themselves eat McDonalds or some other fast food several times per week out of "convenience" (laziness really)..
His 6 year old is the size of a 10 year old.. He's chubby for a kid his age and is abnormally large..
All his kids have had health problems from ear-aches to tonsillitis.. They are constantly sick with something..
His wife used to be a slim 120 before all three kids.. However, she ballooned up to 220 lbs with the first kid and the weight
has never come off (not sure why he'd go ahead and have two more kids after that, but ok...).. She's huge, he's huge..
Their 4 year old girl is beginning to show some development that shouldn't be happening until she's 12...
This is due to the hormones and steroids that reside in all that pre-packaged, pre-processed food/fast food....
People just don't understand how bad this stuff is for you... And none of the :noid :noid :noid BS... This stuff is really really bad for you and your kids..
Moderation is probably fine.. But multiple times per week because your too fat and lazy to actually cook something......??
They never cook anything.. All they eat is fast food and prepackaged, pre-processed crap they you buy at Walmart and stick in the microwave..
They never eat fresh fruits or veggies.. The kids are conditioned by not likomg anything that is remotely good for them.. We are a society that
is driven on immediate gratification with minimal effort..
Convenience=Laziness.... Pre-packaged food is engineered to keep you eating more.. All your prepackaged and fast food contains huge amounts
of MSG.. MSG is what keeps you eating.. It's literally addictive like heroin.. If you stop eating foods with MSG, you will get sick from withdrawal for a short time, just like
heroin..
McDonalds, Burger King, all fast food and prepackaged preprocessed food is LOADED with the stuff..
On the up swing, the entire fast food world as well as the prepackaged food industry have equivalents in the "real" food world that are much better for you...
It's just the fact that we as American's are bred to be lazy.. We are value convenience above all else.. This is what makes us fat and sick..
-
Saw an interesting show the other day talking about dinner plate size.
It seems that over the years, especially the past 30 years, the average size of the dinner plate in America has increased. Because the plates are so large now, a "normal" portion of food looks small. So what ends up happening is Americans fill up their plates and end up comsuming much more food because of it.
It is somewhat like the above optical illusion. Both orange cirlces are the same size but one SEEMS larger. Same thing. Put a cup of pasta on the smaller plate it fills the plate. Put a cup of pasta on the large plate and it "seems" like not enough food.

know one of the easiest ways to lose weight?
eat whatever you want. be at least a LITTLE active.....basic exercise, etc.
here's the trick.
eat slow
it takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that you're full.
eat slower, you'll eat less, thus producing less body fat.
remember i mentioned my brother? he had a weight problem. that's why he makes sure his daughter won't. he lost over 40 pounds, simply by eating slower.
-
I was diagnosed with diabetes about a year ago. I lost 10% of my body weight, and the diabetes went away.
The key to losing weight? Being hungry.
Not the standard American version of hunger - that they are not full - but an actual empty stomach. The requirement to check my blood sugar helped with the self discipline to not eat constantly.
Regarding the BMI, it is skewed towards smaller people. I was at my peak fitness leaving miltary training, and I would be "Overweight" on the CDC chart.
-
Drink a glass of water before you eat. Iv'e put on weight the last few years also. But I worked out everyday for 4 yrs so screw it !
-
1. Eat organic (meat should be without hormones and antibiotics, no more 2x weekly).
2. Do not eat canned/ packaged foods.
3. Limit eating out.
4. Rarely eat fast food.
5. No coffee. Ok, maybe a little.
Just from those simple things, you will notice within 2 weeks higher efficiency of your organ function and alertness. My kids been eating since toddlers organic and they are healthiest than most of their peers.
Myth: Organic is expensive - it cost the same if you take leftover's to work and avoid eating out. It comes out in the wash.

Absolutely....
If people looked at grocery shopping as an experience instead of a pain-in-the-arse, they'd feel better as well as feel better about what they eat..
Even the meat/poultry/fish you buy at Walmart or what ever grocery store and cool yourself is loads better than any kind of pre-packaged/pre-processed/pre-cooked frozen crap..
We have a family of 4.. We take the kids everywhere we shop for food(about 4 different places) just so they can see what it's all about and where the stuff actually comes from..
In the spring, summer and fall we hit one of the farmer's markets at least once a week.. The meat or fish may be of better quality at a different store than where we get most other things....
If you have kids, it all starts with them.. My 4 year old has had a McDonald's Happy Meal once after an outing to the Children's Museum with a bunch of other kids.. Since his system was not accustomed to all BS that resides in a McDonald's hamburger, he got sick and puked all over my buddy's van.. Since then, he wants nothing to do with McDonald's or fast food in general..
This idea of actually cooking something is ludicrous and totally unreasonable for most people due to supposed time constraints.. Hence, they will remain uninformed and unhealthy, like most of the population..

...My solution, force all fast food chain to close by 7 p.m, non of this "open till 1 a.m."...
Agreed. However, seeing that the government failed to get pizza chains to stop advertising their products at certain times of the day I doubt they will convince the restaurants to cut their profit margins by a HUGE hunk.
...and make them to make healthyer foods...
Once again, don't see how the government will force that many restaurants to change.
...Have all restaurants to cut trans fat, carbohydrates ect, and enough of make new junk food, pop, and other foods that causes people to be fat.
Okay, a little difficult to decipher what you were saying here. I'm assuming you want them to take unhealthy properties out of foods? If that's what you're saying, you already missed part of it. Carbohydrates = Energy. Our bodies require Carbohydrates to work, take them out and you're eating things even less healthy than the original product.
I do agree that some things need to be changed. However, getting it changed will be more than difficult. Not to mention the reaction from customers who realize their blubber-burgers no longer produce the same appeasing flavor.

And mostly right Denholm what you say. U.S. government going to spend more money on health care plane rather than focus on where a lot of Americans problem, obesity. As far as carbohydrates, yes they are energy but it is the the main source of energy that makes you fat. I guess we are getting lazy like most of you stated.
Drink a glass of water before you eat. Iv'e put on weight the last few years also. But I worked out everyday for 4 yrs so screw it !
Never heard of that method. How dose that work?
If anybody can find this info, what is the avg body weight for a solder in WWII, Vetnam and right now.

Water decreases the amount of space in your stomach. Therefore when you eat you fill yourself at a faster rate.

someone up the thread had mentioned "forcing all the fast food outlets to close by 7pm". this is a VERY bad idea. good reasoning, but be careful with things like this.
it becomes a slippery slope. today you agree to let the govt force a curfew on them, because you don;'t like the fact that kids are getting fat.
what would then be next? close bowling alleys early, as they sometimes become hangouts for teens? it won't hurt anyone...the old people in the league should be home in bed before 8 anyway.
how about if they decide that your favorite sporting goods outlet shouldn't be opened on weekends? and you work monday-saturday? but you wanted to go after work on saturday to buy that new hoyt compound bow? or that new glock?
see the point here? yes, i am :noid with this, because it's the little steps they work in.

If they were to run a bit more, they wouldn't be so fat. The food is easy to burn off, unless you let it keep mounting weight on you. Then its hard...

Calculate your body mass index (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5297790.stm)
That BMI is a bit rough.
According to that, if I lost 10kgs I'd still be in the very highest/borderline range for the 'OK' range.
I have put on a few kilos lately due to poor diet and a full work/study workload, but if I lost 10kg without losing much muscle, I would be ripped.
That's hardly what I would consider an indicator of healthy body mass.
As it is, I'm just drying off after a shower after 1-hour cardio/weights workout, so those 10kgs shouldn't be an issue for long.

Yup in NZ they forced school cafeteria's to stop selling 'fatty' foods, ie pies, chips etc. So they kids ended up going to nearby takeaway places and getting much low quality food (ie pies with far higher fat and crap content).

You make a good point. And i am not totally point the finger on the fast food chain. There are other areas that is just as fault for obesity.
The challenges that we face as we get fat is the chemicals in our brain telling us. I watch a program on T.V. not long a go and from what i was listen is that the fats in our body released some hormones that our brain picks up. From there we have a need to eat more and more. I may have got half of that wrong (do please correct me on it).
-

right. it's like making a seatbelt law. those that wish, WILL find a way around it.
but also remember......if they force curfew on something you agree with today, it might be something you like next times.

That's communism right there.
With freedom comes responsibility; if you can't keep your weight down it is no ones fault but your own. Not McDonald's. Not Burger King's. You.
If you die because you can't stop stuffing your face with cheeseburgers... Well, that's Darwinism.

Low carbohydrate diet... Not low fat diets...
Heart healthy, reduces risk of diabetes, reduces triglycerides and cholesterol. It's taken the medical community 30 years to admit that Adkins was right (even if Adkins didn't know exactly why he was right). It doesn't mean you can't enjoy a high carb meal now and then. Moderation is the key. Get some routine exercise too. Walking, biking, any sport where you are active for 30 minutes is great.
The thing about low carb diets is that the lack of carbohydrates reduces the body's craving for sugars, and with it, reduces your appetite. You will eat less and barely notice.
Beer, by the way, is not loaded with complex carbos. Especially, light beers. Thus, it's perfectly fine to have a beer or two with an evening meal. Wines, both red and white are good too (red is supposedly better).
My regards,
Widewing

hmmm. complex carbs are the ones you want, its the simple carbs that are harmful/useless (like the sugars in beer). complex carbs are a quicker source of blood glucose than proteins and fats. thats why athletes carb-pack with eg. pasta in the 12-24h before an event.
I used to row and a regatta is a really tough test for blood chemistry - races lasting ~6mins each separated by an hour or so. in the first ~15s of a race your creatine is all used up, by the end your blood glucose is pretty much all gone too, not to mention a huge build up of lactic acid in the muscles. after a race we would rehydrate, then eat sandwiches (with very little low-fat, zero sugar filling) or cold pasta. you see some guys eating mars bars (the packet says it gives you energy!), you know they are going to get a nice sucrose rush for ~15mins, then a massive blood glucose crash straight after.
metabolism is incredibly complex, but as a simple rule low-fat, low-carb is a good way to go. after that you need to know which are the good carbs and fats (ie fatty acids from fish oils good, pig lard bad). If I had to pick the best advice for diet it would probably come from a former eastern block olympic coach, contrary to public opinion the biggest factor in their results in the 70s and 80s wasnt from drug use but far superior sports science. the aussies have been doing great work in this area for the last couple of decades too :aok
-
metabolism is incredibly complex, but as a simple rule low-fat, low-carb is a good way to go.
That worked really well for me. Unfortunately it worked so well that I stopped working out and kept loosing weight for a good while. So when I fell off the wagon and wasn't working out at all it was a real squeak to get rid of again. Did anyone watch "Generation Kill?" That was a very funny point that Americans are pretty amazing for creating a culture that allows POOR fat people. Most "poor" people in the world can't afford to get fat.
Anyhow, I've been up and down over the years. My normal weight is about 180, which is fat (I'm 5'10). My optimum weight while working out is 175. After college I ballooned up to 210, and was so fat my back started having trouble. I've tried low fat diets, I've tried working out without changing my diet, and I went low-fat low carb. The best combination I've come up with for me is working out with low fat, medium carbs. That is, don't go crazy on the pasta, but don't fret of having toast with your eggs in the morning.
At the end of the day you can screw up any diet. I remember destroying a low fat diet by eating my weight in fat free pretzels lol. If people need a guide to help them figure out the whole low-fat/low carb diet, Southbeach is pretty good. I'm not a true believer or anything, but the concepts really do work. I noticed that my portion size really shrank on Southbeach too, and I think that's a huge part of it.

sounds about right, if your in training you will need the extra complex carbs for energy, if you're trying to add muscle mass, extra protein. essentially theres a baseline to which you add whats required for your regime. as for all the different diets, the only thing they achieve is sales of books, product and airtime, paid for by people who dont want to exercise. if you're overweight the only way to lose it is exercise and a healthy diet.
-
Medium carb sounds like the best way to go for a few reasons.
People seem to interpret 'low-carb' as 'no-carb' and avoid them like the plague.
If your body is not getting what it needs in the way of fuel, vitamins and minerals it will go into 'starvation mode' and store whatever it can.
According to a body-builder who has some great tips across the whole range of weight loss (fat) and gain (muscle), exercise (including form) and nutrition, the more you weigh, the more you need to eat in order to steadily lose fat without losing all of your muscle. It's all really down-to-earth stuff, no fads, no 'load up on this' etc etc, it's just about good nutrition and practice. He's a funny guy too, he takes the piss out of all of the gimmick, 10lbs in a week exercise machines and all the other stuff like that.
He breaks it down into a table here: http://fitness.scoobysworkshop.com/6packabs.htm (http://fitness.scoobysworkshop.com/6packabs.htm)
