Title: speed freeks?
Post by: Dastrdly on July 02, 2009, 08:44:08 AM
i was watching a weird dark comedy few nites back staring val kilmer & a who's who of celebrity's. wish i could remember what it was called but it was a hilarious show. anyways there was reference to the origins of 'speed', invented by a Japanese scientist wwll. its as issued to everyone from war factory workers to army & air force personell.... lots of production, little sleep food needed. said 2% of japans population were addicted at the end of the war. also pointed to it as the reason they were able to carry out so many different suicidal missions ....IE manned torps, comicozy pilots. guess the drug makes them feel invincible but that I'm only guessing.

I'm also guessing that this thread gonna generate some dark comedy too :x

but is there any Truth to any of it?

phets were synthesised in the C19th and used by all sides in WWII (and WWI iirc). the Germans preferred meth :o

quite popular with the Taliban in Afghanistan at the moment, and suicide bombers the world over.

comicozy pilots.
Kamikaze.

Though your spelling invokes both comic and cozy.  Like a funny plush toy.

My pop was a navigator on a B17 in 1945.Dark Angel
He told me at the tables in the mess hall were bowls of Benzedrine tabs and that it was mandatory
for all personal to take some with you before a mission.
when they got up to altitude, take one or two to stay alert.

LOL.... one or two....i kinda don't know what that means.

from what i can remember, that stuff had a nasty drop.
don't know how they did it.

that is all

51 drivers flying the VLR missions from Iwo escorting the B29s took Benzidrine to keep them going on those long range flights.

Heh, this reminded me of something.

Dad was doing a little truck driving back in the early sixties, and folks were still innocent enough they didn't think of Bennies as a "drug". So another driver gives my Dad a few and tells them these are to keep you awake, that sounds just fine to him.

Well, he was somewhere, God-know-where, in the Panhandle of Texas when he starts to feel pretty drowsy. So he takes ones. In a little while, he starts to feel drowsy again, so he takes another. As he tells it, he is driving along just fine and wide awake on this empty two lane highway, when suddenly out of the darkness he sees an old-fashioned steam train coming directly at him, just as clear as day...he can see the cow-catcher, he can see the lantern, he can see the number on the thing...coming at him head-on on the darn highway, in his lane! He pulls off on the side and shuts her down in a hurry! Of course there wasn't even any railroad track within sight anywhere around.

Needless to say after than incident my Dad sticks strictly to the java for a pick-me-up.
