good luck!!
i still remember my first solo.......it was fun.
remember the plane's gonna perform much better without your 200# cfi in there.
:aok :aok :aok
grease em on dude!

Good luck. That will certainly be a life-long memory. I remember my first solo clearly: Looking over at that empty seat next to me and feeling a bit of terror and euphoria all rolled into one! Climbing out afterwards feeling on top of the world. :x
PS: Don't wear a shirt you really care about. ;)

I thought that was for the first cross-country...? Was for me. :)
My first solo was in a R22 Beta helicopter... shocked the heck out of me when the thing leapt off the ground without the weight of the instructor that I was used to!
Good luck, Nova!

<--Agreeing with Roundeye.... What a Blast I had that day...back in 1983, when I Taxied away from the Ramp...ALONE. (I had NO idea that my CFI PLANNED on my SOLO today).
****and The look on my CFI's Face was PRICELESS....
.... and it went some thing like this:
** Current ATIS info = ALPHA (winds 185@7)
NOTE: I had been flying earlier that morning with RIGHT Traffic patterns, making a few minor (very minor) altitude judgement errors.
(ME) "Ground.. Cessna XXXX , With ALPHA .. Taxi.... 1st Solo..."
(Tower...grnd Freq..to me) "Cessna XXXX, Taxi to 15, Squalk (xxxxxxx..don't remember what is was..) Tower Frequency 118.3 when ready.. Good luck. !
(ME, grnd Freq) "Ground, CessnaXXXX Taxi to 15, roger"
So I putter out to the "Hold short", do my Run up.... Breathe.... Deep breath... & Dial up Tower.. 118.30
(ME) "Tower, Cessna XXXX ready to go, 15"
(Tower on 118.30) Cessna XXXX Looks like the winds are changing. Current ATIS now "Bravo" and winds at Three Zero Zero @ 9.... Continue Taxi on Runway 15 & taxi to the Other end...Advise when ready.
(ME)" Roger... taxi onto 15 to the other end & I'll advise."
So I putter to the other end....(4500 feet) & turn around headed 330 degrees...
(ME) "Tower, Cessna XXXX ready to go..."
(Tower) " Cessna XXXX Cleared for takeoff... Climb & maintain 2000 feet please,... Left traffic"
Now mind you... my CFI is on the ground watching all of this without a radio (for monitoring me & the local traffic) & After I took off & was comfortable.. I thought of him doing the "OMG... WTF is he doing, thought & I absolutely Broke out laughing at him.. with me Soloing.
After I made my touch & go's & landed, The Taxi back to the ramp was full of my "Ohhh Helll Yeaaaas, I did it..." & the like. I did see My CFI was giving me the 'golf clap' sign of approval as I shut down & got chocked.
The Thing I remember MOST about that day (back in 1983 !) was the Story he told ME and how he had to run to the FBO & listen on the radio to see WTF was I was up to.... Turns out, he never heard the ATIS change to "Bravo" & never even thought about a wind change.
Hugely rewarding AND I still chuckle after 25+ Years.
Lastly.... I lost my Favorite TeeShirt that day.. My name, Cessna XXXX, date & time were Written on the back,(in black Marker) then it was CUT from my back with a pair of scissors. I drove home "Backless"
Good Luck xNOVAx! <S>
Have a blast ! :rock
ps, I'm still in Aviation but don't fly anymore....

Best of luck. Flying solo is a kick.

So I've heard.. Noted!
Thanks Guys! :rock

Good luck xNOVAx - let us know how it goes.
I'm a bit behind you - off to do stalls and spins for the first time tomorrow.

Wow you guys are doing spins? We've done power on and power off stalls, but yet to put the cessna into a spin.. I don't think my instructor would allow it and I don't think its a required part of training anymore.. Though, I did get myself into some spins when I went flying in a Pitts S-2B a few months ago.. :)

Your instructor thinks you're ready. Good luck, though you won't be relying on luck.
Roundeye is right. You will remember these few landings forever. Roll it on the runway. "Tower, confirm wheels on the ground."
-
good luck nova, im sure you will do fine
-
Spins are fun. Glider's have more fun :) at least for recreation. power planes go places lol
kind regards FBClaw

Get a new instructor. I never gave an endorsement to anyone who had never spun and recovered an airplane. That's my rule. If he's afraid or intimidated by spins then he's the one who needs additional training. Stall and Spin awareness are one thing but you have to do them and not be intimidated by them in order to be safe should you ever find yourself in one.
-
Glad there's a big pond between us, I should feel safe on sunday :D
j/k, have fun & walk away from the landing. The plane being flyable again is only a bonus. ;)
-
Good luck. It'll be fun.

Isn't there a requirement to wear a chute during spins?

Nope. Not in the USA.

Hmm... I guess it was rule in my old school then.
-
Welp.. Just got back from my lesson today, and I'm not ready for my solo on sunday.. I'll have to push it back for a few weeks now.. Pretty frustruating but I'm sure its for the best because I really don't want to be making the same little mistakes during my solo as I was making today.. Argh! :frown:
-
You'll be fine, Nova. Everybody feels the same way leading up to it. In fact I don't remember a checkride or initial type ride where the night before I would question whether or not I was ready for it. It keeps you sharp, keeps your nose in the books and makes you a better pilot because of it.
You can't forget to put the gear down. You're not going to forget to push the props forward. No worries about setting the flaps for takeoff and having the airplane yell at you because your configuration is wrong. You just learned how to not count your chickens before the eggs hatched is all. Celebrate by saying you solo'd not that you're going to. Thinking like that will put extra pressure on you whether you realize it or not as you've built it up on your head. It's very easy to let things snowball once you start making a mistake or two and you'll always make mistakes. If you let them eat at you by not moving on and doing the next thing you need to you're going to snowball into a mental mess which safe to say every pilot has done at least once. I know I did and still remember it happening in slow motion during an oral checkride of all things. I learned from the feelings of slipping so when it happened a year or so later for my initial CFI checkride I was able to draw on the experience, regroup and focus on what needed to be done to finish the oral portion of the practical test. You learned that lesson earlier than I did so draw upon whatever mistakes you made and remember them.
You'll do fine :)

'peice of cake' -grin-
Agree with alla others, the day will bring a smile every time you think of it from now on.
I still smile thinkin of 'four-zero-romeo' ..aka 'Snaggletooth' ..'68 C-172 with the exhaust stickin straight down outta the cowling and a bit loud at full giddyup.
Just sooo much fun to fly :)

Can't say the same for my first solo (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dotdoubledot/2831541133/). I was really focused on the task. My instructor thought I was ready a few weeks before I agreed. In hindsight, I was really worried about whether I'd panic or not. That worry passed after the first landing. Can't say I actually enjoyed it and after seven passes, my thoughts were, "Okay, what's next?" It wasn't until my fourth or fifth solo flight that it became fun and I stopped worrying so much about making mistakes. That was a good day. I was twenty miles or so from the field and as I was turning the airplane I actually started laughing.

I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I'm finding that the airplane is quite capable of landing even when I miss my target parameters somewhat. Still exploring those particular boundaries.

I know what you mean. I was in a 152 and it just hopped off the runway solo. (then I started hearing all these strange sounds I had never noticed before when I had my 'safety net') unforgettable time for sure.

*snip*
My instructor thought I was ready a few weeks before I agreed.
Same here. She said I was ready but had a habit of keeping her hand on the yoke every time I flared for landing. I had no problems with landings by that point, but it was just a habit she had. I told her that when she can ride along like a passenger and not make any corrections or touch any controls THEN I'm ready.
We got to that point and I soloed with no problems. She was an excellent instructor who mixed fun with learning to fly. She would pick out a little cloud and fly through it then look back to see if there was an airplane-shaped hole in it like in the cartoons. :) Those were some good times.
She moved to Key West shortly after I soloed and was killed in a banner-towing accident. :frown: I will always remember her unique style of instruction and can picture her now soaring among the clouds and looking back to see if she left little angel-shaped holes in them.
Plane: Cessna 152 N49415
Instructor: Ryan Koury (RIP) :salute
These are good times. Enjoy them while you can.

Spins aren't required any more, but my school makes a point of making everyone do them.
Was slightly apprehensive on Friday, but it turned out to be fun. Wouldn't recommend a large lunch beforehand though. :D
Hope you get the solo soon xNOVAx

My school didn't require spin training either, but I asked my instructor to teach me. He was a retired Vietnam era fighter pilot. He taught me several things that I credited with saving my life years later, one of them being spin recovery.
In my day we got a bucket of water (standing water from the FBO I'm sure) tossed on us and our shirt tails cut off after the solo. Your learning really begins after the solo.

LOL Sandman .. I wasn't 'ready' in my own mindset either, and I was so focused that when he stepped out and said 'ok take it around the pattern, I want 2 touch an goes and a full stop' .. caught me completely by surprise.
I did not smile, I was so focused on checklist, end of runway, check traffic clearance, airspeed, rate of climb ..all that pilot stuff that keeps ya busy.
I just processed information and did all that pilot stuff.
I can still remember every detail of my first approach.. solo.
It wasn't 'typical' bidness as usual by a long ways.
Turned left base, and a 'tourist' had just turned right base for final.
We were head on pointing at the same spot in the air.
I called on local (it wasn't a tower controlled field, Apple Valley CA, back in the day)
No response, I dont think he ever saw me.
I added power, saw the little KR homebuilt rocket as he called final slippin under my nose ..
..he was fast and down long before I was gonna get there.
I went up and over the tourist and paralleled the runway at pattern alt,
.. bet Mike (my Instructor) was chewin nails :)
KR pilot and I both commented on local about the 'tourist' looking for a place to crash cause he sure wasn't payin attention.

somehow managed a double post .. weirdin out.

i hate when people do that......he was on the wrong base, and made sure he was lower than you, so in his mind, he had the right of way.
when my cfi was checking me out in the 152, we had a guy(who could barley speak english no less) enter for a left downwind for 08. the problem was that 26 was the active, and we were just turning crosswind at 50ft. hearing his call, i repeated that i was on right crosswind for 26, and that 26 was active. he simply repeated himself. my cfi got on, and at first calmly told the guy that he couldn't us 08 as 26 was active in the pattern. the guy waited, then repeated himself AGAIN....to which my cfi went nuts(only time i've ever seen bob lose his cool) on they guy, albiet somewhat politley.
all during this, i was staying on crosswind, in a shallow climb, so i could see what the dude was doing. he finally realized his mistake, and called that he was exiting the pattern to the north. we made a nice hard turn to get back into the pattern, and landed, then sat there and waited till this guy was on the ground......took down his tail number, turned it into the club owner, who then called the school that he was flying out of.

Nah.. the KR had called his points, I knew he was very clear of me on my approach .. he was cookin it in at 110ias over the fence usually.
Was a rocket.
The 'tourist' was some twin engine ..I think Cherokee, wasn't sure, prolly had family with him, just blew me away that someone would come into pattern and not check anything about the field ..little things like what freq was used, pattern being flown, minor stuff like that.
