USS Pensacola, San Francisco or Salt Lake City or one of that class of heavy cruiser. The absence of a number makes exact identification very difficult. Especially when I'm at the office without my library at hand. :D

Seems like USS Portland, or Indianapolis to me.

You are correct RAM. Portland Class it is. The shorter tripod mast with the Mk 27 8" director is what I noticed first. Photo is Pre War or very early in the war due to the lack of AA guns.

Easy! That's a ship! :D
Yes, I'm in a very serious mood. I blame it all on a broken down coffee machine.
Cheers,

Just read "Ordeal by Sea," with a forward and postcript by the last commander of the attack sub, Indianapolis. He heard about the Indianapolis tragedy the same way I did: Spielberg's "Jaws."
Only a few survivors left, but, to a man, they completely absolve their Captain of any wrongdoing.
One of the worst naval disasters of all time. Only the sinking of the Hood might challenge it.
