Title: AW veteran return as AH newb
Post by: SideWinder on July 09, 2009, 11:04:17 AM
Hello all..

I am a former Air Warrior from early-mid '90s, started out playing it through GEnie ISP on my Amiga 500. Was member of DFA squad along with Killer. I remember playing (getting shot down by) along side DokGonzo, GreyEagle, HiTech, Escargot (think that's how he spelled it) and Pyro, to name a few. I also remember meeting some of my fellow pilots at the first AW Con held in Houston back in Oct '95 I think it was.

I went by SideWinder and was player ID No. 4377 (have no idea how i remembered the number).

Anyway, I loved it. Had to drop cuz of life intervening, and thought I would enjoy getting back in the saddle (6 kids and now a grandchild later).

Hope to see you in the arenas, you'll recognize me as the clueless newb helping to pad everyone else's stats by offering up his crate for target practice!

See Ya!    :salute

Welcome SideWinder.  The Training Arena's a great place to shake the rust off.

That it is..... just be careful not to get cut on all the 38 parts laying around on the ground in there.

Much to Zap's disappointment, lethality is zero so you can't scatter P-38 parts like dandelion seeds over the TA's green fields.

Thanks everyone for the warm greets. That's one of the things that kept me coming back in AW, the strong sense of community and comraderie, in spite of all the crashing and burning, and the occasional kill being scored.  :D

Hiya Side, I quit DFA and AW about 95/96 time frame.  Killer was CO at the time.

Rash

Oh, I remember my # as 2599, and I flew a lot with Sly or was it Fly?  His # was 666?.

SAPP birds still fall apart in the TA. It is part of the SAPP training to learn to fly our 38s in differing degrees of parts shortages. Also so they can learn to save the blender at all costs.

No OOZ, I didn't take any insult and was just funnin' ya. And I like these using new-fangled emot-icons.  :lol  We didn't have them back in the 1200-baud modem days!

Welcome back, SideWinder :)

What's your call sign in Aces High?

If you're ever feeling overwhelmed by the arenas or are looking for someone to practice what Moot and company have retaught you, let me know.  I'd be more than happy to act as a spirited target drone for you, if you'll fill my head with stories from the old days (I only found Air Warrior in '98, but I'm very interested in the history of these games).

I've resurrected my nom de plume, but it doesn't all fit, so it's SideWind

Thanks Vudak, and everyone else who have taken time out to reply with a "welcome Back".   :salute

I even saw a greeting from a current DFA member, Titan. Thanks. This DFA squad have any connection with my old AW ->DFA<- squad?

See ya up there!

Sidewind?  Maybe SW is available?  ;) I know of a few ex AW'ers that shortened their names.  Just don't use SB or ND, some newbs already claim those. Welcome back my friend.  If you fly Bish and see me up, give me a shout!

Hey!  Welcome to Aces High!

Also, even if you don't have your sea legs (or air legs) back yet, you are very welcome to play also in scenarios.  The tradition of having scenarios is carried on here in Aces High.

The next one up is Coral Sea (something we couldn't do all that well in the Air Warrior days).  More info is here if you are interested:

Moot- Thanks to the quality of your flying and the lack of quality in mine, I still scatter plenty of p38 parts thank you very  much!

Also shuffler's right about the blender, SAPP legend has it he broke of a formation of 15 c-47's to chase a falling blender. Long story short the blender hit the water, Shuffler compressed and also hit the water. But a move like that is almost grounds for saint hood :)
