How many M2s did you put on it?
-
Looks sweet.......... just one question, why do you still have a chain wrapped around that camshaft ??
-
Why did you paint inside the engine? Ya know that paint is ENAMEL right? Abrasive as hell!!!
How come the engine is in the car, but the timing chain cover isn't on yet?
Just wondering?

Sweet. WTF are you doing on the computer? :D

Really? As opposed to?

Is that a NOS plate I see under there?
-
Man, you screwed up, you bolted it in sideways! :D

A floating-idler gear drive, or a fixer-idler geardrive?

gear drive

Or belt?

This is a second build. Putting in a new camshaft(solid roller) without yanking motor. :)
Uptown, yup there's a NOS plate there. It has a 200 shot.
Here is the motor before the swap of new parts:

IT looks like it .

whats the 0-60 ? 3.0? show us the bottle. intercooler ? last Wear a helmet! :x
MSD ignition, you should take it to track pass. no pinks, just a trip down the track.

Vettes are fun

you have a keen eye. You have been to the track near my house I believe..... Speedworld in Wittman.

Ya I think you are probably right... it will come in somewhere around 3.0.... guessing. The NOS doesn't come on at launch.. there'd be no traction.
Here's a pic of where the bottle sits...you can see it... sorry but I couldn't find another pic of it.

A floating-idler gear drive, or a fixer-idler geardrive?
Gear drives are a nightmare on the valvetrain, and the ones with idler gears are even worse. I'd much rather have a good chain, we quit using gear drives ten years ago, and it would have been a lot more than ten years ago if I'd had my way. The ultimate is a belt drive, if it was legal in Stock Eliminator, I'd have one, but I'm using a 0.250" link true roller.

I'm a little embarrassed. I didn't know what either is. Dunno if I've ever seen either in any of the cars I've worked on.

i've seen both belt drives(haven't seen them for fords, but have for chevys), and gear drives. i've never used either. a friend of mine had a gear drive on his corvette(69). i've never used either myself. i've always used roller chains.

I'm just a shade tree wrench turner., no doubt you and Virg have seen a ton more engines and have miles of expertise compared to me. :)

steve in all seriousness, with the $$ you have in aluminum heads/roller rockers/you should at the very least have a premium double roller chain [preferably one with 3 keys slots for degreeing]
gear drives are a mixed bag, they can be noisy and some require machine work to the block.
belt drives are quiet and lighter and offer the least resistance and are best choice for any high RPM engine.
bottom line is, the last thing you want is to toss a cheap chain at 8k + rpm and have those pretty heads get messed up.
-
Looks like that's a billet top gear 0.250" pin roller timing set to me.

i think my racing experience pales in comparison to virgil.............

No doubt. I haven't skimped on any of the parts for this reason. There isn't a "cheap" part in the drive train. The original timing chain had become a littrle loose and we are replacing it.
I'm glad for everyone's input. My choice on Cam style was largely influenced by Virgil. I didn't want to go through the expense but after much thought decided to go to solid roller. Here's the numbers on the Cam: 628 lift on intake and 655 on exhaust.
I moved peak power up the rpm band and I understand will probably lose a little bottom end grunt but this is a good thing; there's no point in just spinning the tires. With the .373's and solid roller, it should spin up to good rpm's quickly.

Well, all three of the camdrives have advantages and disadvantages.. Rigid, single idler, straight cut, gear drives are best for race only.. They give the highest precision in cam and ign timing, but transfer harmonic vibrations to the camshaft.. Cams are mostly made of ductile iron, harmonic vibes can workharden them, so they snap off clean behind the front cam journal... (seen it many times, even when shimmed to perfection) Thats why they really don't belong in a street car.. LOL, shimming is also a big issue for most guys...
Floating idler gear drives, are not quite as precise, but close... They'll give more longevity, and not as much noise.. But have the same harmonics problem in the end...
Chain is fine as long as its a true "roller chain", and its from a quality manufacturer.. But it will be stretched after one weekend of racing.. They will show 2 or 3 degrees of deviation in timing after a short period of time..
But, It'll take ya well past 8k without any trouble.. Something else will probably break first, 90% likelyhood...
Belts are pretty cool, retain their tension longer than chain, and don't transfer harmonics.. Also with the sealed front of the block, it makes adjustment of cam timing a snap.. Especially with a silicon filled block and no water pump.. There is no shimming etc.. Overall, chain will last longer, but the belts are easier to change, and you don't have to open the crankcase, (timingcover, oilpan)..
Take your choice, they all work..
Have fun, be safe..

That looks like you have some nice components put into that motor Steve...you looking for low 11s on motor? Depends on weight I guess.
Nice work tho!
I have a 96 Carpenter 216" RED powered by a 406" SBC with Brodix heads.
Been 8.50s in it......its quite a ride at Lakeland. 1/8 mile to go.......5/16 mile to stop with 30 foot berm at the end of the track.
Started bouncing one time so I pulled the chute. Got it stopped and got out only to see the parachute fall to ground.
It popped loose as I jumped out...talk about letting you down.
:rofl

Yes, I'd be pretty happy with low 11's. :)

Sheet dude, that's fast.

It is fast, to be honest tho Id rather race a 11 second street car. I can take the steering wheel off and go down the track 95% of the time. We do a lot of bracket racing and pipe racks are better for that. Not to mention cheaper to go fast.....
You played with the giggle gas before?

I've used the NOS twice on that car... rolled it on slow with the controller. That's the depth of my experience.
