Title: Copy DVR to computer?

Was wondering if there is a way to copy a movie from my dvr to my computer? It has a usb port on the front.

If it is a comcast dvr then no..have already tried.  For some reason the comcast dvrs have the front usb port disabled.

Highly doubt it.  The USB port in the front probably only lets you load stuff onto the DVR or it may be for firmware upgrades like my LCD and Plasma TVs have.

It's U-verse dvr.

U lucky SOB you got U-Verse lol.  Im waiting impatiently for it to arrive in my neighborhood. 

You might be lucky then I would try connecting a usb cable to it then.  If not see if you can access it through a network.

You may not be able to directly 'copy' a dvr recording into your computer, but you should be able to record your dvr's analogue output to your computer. Basically, you would playback a dvr recording and capture it to your computer in real time, as standard definition video.

You'll need a video card capable of video capture, or a stand alone box like the Canopus ADVC models (which are superb), and some software for capturing the video coming into your PC. My favorite combo for this is a Canopus unit and the Scenalyzer software. Be aware that you may need a lot of hard disk space if you are capturing the video in raw, uncompressed DV/AVI format. After capturing, you can then edit, compress, and even burn a dvd of the video with a video editor, like Adobe Premier or Sony Vegas.

Once you get the hang of it, it is pretty easy, but can be time consuming.

If you are trying to get an hd recording from your dvr to your pc hardrive good luck.  I think there are some hacks to do it but i havent tried.  I have dish hd dvr and use a 750gig external to store all my hd content.  i can only use the hardrive with MY dvr.  If i bring to a friends house and plug it in it will reformat :(  The same thing holds true if I plug into a pc.  currently i have about 40 movies, the whole battlestar gallactica series, and numerous other things and still have 100 gig left.  I believe you can use muultiple hard drives too.  Not sure if uverse offers it yet
