Title: X-Fi Sound, Vista Compatibility
Post by: TheRapier on July 13, 2009, 12:09:50 AM
I've been recently having a problem that is driving me insane. The game has been working fine until recently I updated my X-Fi driver to the new SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_18_0013. Now all my sounds work just fine for a few minutes, then I get a little sound that sounds just like a thin rubber band being snapped. The sounds will stop and sometimes come back or other times quit completely.

I have rolled back the driver, reinstalled the new one, installed X-Fi's console and reinstalled AH. With each change its getting worse.

I also noticed that I used to be able to select "Vista Compatible" in AH but that choice is no longer there. The next best is XP SP2. What's up with that?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is dropping my play time to zero.

Here is my dxdiag:

Latest isn't always greatest -- I'd go back to the previous driver version you had.  Although Skuzzy or others will probably have more technical suggestions based on your specs.

Have you tried uninstalling the drivers and sound-card completely, removing it from the computer, starting the computer (so windows realizes it's not longer there), shutting down windows, reinstalling the card, starting windows, then using the drivers that came with the sound-card?

Make sure that after you remove the drivers you use a program such as Driver Cleaner Pro (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/desktop_software/other_tools/driver_cleaner_pro.cfm) to completely remove any trace of the sound drivers.

Thanks ImADot!

Unfortunately I already tried going back to the previous driver and it got worse. I'm now back on the latest driver and its worse yet. I was getting about a half hour to 45 minutes before losing the sound, now its about 5 minutes.

The wierd thing is that vox still works, I just have no sound. The little sound that proceeds the stoppage is like a little "bink", then sometimes the sound picks up again or it will just be silent and nothing I do brings it back short of rebooting. Then the reboot only lasts a few minutes.

Sound else where in Vista is working fine.

It almost seems like there is some process that is running repeatedly and sometimes it fails to connect to AH. I found something like "Sound Systems Service" that seems to start and stop, but I don't know what it does.

Thanks!

Thanks Denholm!

I haven't tried that but I did everything short of pulling the card. I'll do it if that is what is indicated since the game is pretty unplayable now.

Skuzzy, do you think I should pull the card?

Thanks!

As mentioned, I would uninstall the card using the add/remove hardware feature. Then I would shut down, pull out the card, and start windows. Now I would uninstall the sound drivers, restart windows, then use Driver Cleaner Pro to wipe any remainder of the drivers. Now I would shut down, insert the sound-card, then use the CD-ROM that came with my sound card to install the drivers.

If that doesn't do it I would call the manufacturer and tell them they need to send me a new sound-card.

Thanks Denholm! I'll give that a try when I get home.

Do you know about the "Vista Compatible" setting in AH? I saw in another thread that Skuzzy was recommending that you select WinME compatible for multi processor systems. Right now I'm set on Win XP SE compatible.

Thanks!
Title: Re: X-Fi Sound, Vista Compatibility

That's for AMD 2-core processors. Older AMD processors have a bug which Aces High happens to trigger. It has something to do with the application not being able to run smoothly on both cores. The compatibility mode set to Win98/ME bypasses the second core forcing the application to run on a single core of the processor. That way the bug won't affect the game.

I don't think compatibility mode will help you with a driver issue, though.

Problem also exists in XP with the X-Fi losing sound in the middle of games.  In most cases (at least in XP) alt+tabbing out and then starting the Creative Console, then clicking on 'Default' fixes it, no need to reboot or even exit out of the game to restore sound.

Thanks Ack-Ack! I thought of that but alt tabbing in Vista causes AH to fail, which means reboot and a disco. I've never been able to alt tab AHII in Vista successfully.

If there were any way to do it from in game, I'd take that :).

Thanks!

I have to wonder if there is something physically wrong with the speaker jack.  A "pop" kind of noise could correlate with a loose connection in the jack there... and since the mic uses a separate jack..well yaknow.

Next time it happens, rapidly unplug and plug the speakers back in several times and see if that makes any difference...

No its just a cheap processor on the X-Fi and faux capacitors too probably.

Vista employs a BOHICA approach to audio and even buying a fantastic audio card wont fix everything but SB cards dont even begin to scratch the surface. If you insist on sticking to Creative then look for a card that does its own processing without offloading work to the CPU and you will have better performance and fewer issues but you still will not have great audio. I would suggest a 7.1 like HT Omega or ASUS Xonar or bGears b-Enspirer but anything you get you should do your homework ahead of time.

Hi All!

Thanks for all the advice, but unfortunately no joy :(.

I uninstalled the sound card drivers, all of the sound related stuff (High Definition Audio Device, 2 of them), cleaned them with Driver Cleaner Pro to remove the traces of the sound drivers and then reinstalled the old SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_18_0008 driver.

Game played for about a half hour then the sound quit just like before. :(

Tonight I'll try doing the same with the newer driver.

One thing I noticed was that I got a VirtuMonde virus notice from my StopZilla virus checker when installing the driver right when it got to the point of "Updating the Windows Drivers" portion. Is there any possibility that Creative would have a virus in their driver? If so, where can I get a clean driver from? I scanned the machine after that and it came back clean.

Vista also reinstalls the High Definition Audio Devices as soon as you restart the machine and it doesn't go to the web for them, it must be part of Vista. I tried disabling them but that didn't do anything.

Also, what happened to the "Vista Compatible" choice for AH? Did it get moved or dropped?

Let me know if you have any ideas. I'm just about out of them.

Thanks!

If you have Virtumonde (REALLY hard to get rid of) you had better hurry and do the following:

Download and run: Vundo Fix (http://vundofix.atribune.org/)

Then register for the trial of ESET NOD32 AntiVirus (http://www.eset.com).
Now download Spybot Search & Destroy (http://download.cnet.com/Spybot-Search-amp-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html?tag=mncol).
Now download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button).
Now download AVG Anti-Rootkit Free (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AVG-Anti-Rootkit.shtml).

Additionally you may want to run a scan using Spyware Doctor (http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor-antivirus/) as it is GREAT at detecting these types of bugs. The only down-side is that they want you to activate the product before they remove any of the software.

Hi Denholm!

Thanks for the info!

I'm not sure that Virtumonde is on my machine as I have no symptoms whatsoever (no pop ups, no BSOD). Stopzilla appears to be catching and stopping it.

BTW, for what its worth, I had a less than good experience with Spybot before. It didn't do anything bad, it just didn't do anything.

Just to be sure, I'll run Vundo Fix.

I don't know what this would have to do with the sound not working though? The old driver I've had for months and got no such warning when it was installed before.

Thanks!

Update to the last.

I ran Vundo Fix, no virus found, so I don't think that's it.

I tried it again, only this time using the driver from Windows Update (I know, I know! but at this point I'm desperate). Same thing happened, that is I got a warning from Stopzilla for Virtumonde. Something in that driver, no matter the source, is kicking off that warning.

At this point, it seems I have two choices.

1. Try again with an older driver (I've been able to find a couple).
2. Get a new sound card.

I'd appreciate information of the advisability of either.

In particular, any recommendations of sound cards that have been bulletproof with AH and Vista. I don't want to do this again :).

Thanks!

If anything pops up saying Virtumonde is in your system you had better get hopping and use the utilities mentioned above. The few times I touched machines with Virtumonde fully unpacked there was no way to remove the virus. I think you would rather avoid such an unhappy occasion.

Be safe, run NOD32, Malwarebytes, Spybot, and AVG Anti-Rootkit Free.

Just so you know, Spybot is designed to find spyware, not viruses or malware. If it didn't find something, it's probably because it was looking for something entirely different. Every scanner is designed to look for a specific type of software that can harm your system. Not any one scanner will find everything, thus the need for multiple scanners designed to look for different types of software is ever present. The combination I mentioned above has always worked for me regardless the occasion or how many times I had to use them.

I would rather be safe than sorry.

Ok thanks Denholm! I'll look at these programs.

Does anyone have recommendations of good soundcards? I looked at the ones Chalenge mentioned, HT Omega or ASUS Xonar or bGears b-Enspirer, but in the reviews I saw, they all seemed to have problems with games. As I already have problems with the game, I don't want to add to that. :) I'm having all the fun I can stand now. :)

Thanks!

I have never heard of any of these cards having trouble with games and Im using the bGears card here and it doesnt have issues with games that I have seen. Its actually better for games because little if any load is added to the CPU. I use the Omega on another system that is primarily a media center system but I do have some games on that one too (mostly stuff like golf and console type games for my nephews). I have had no issues with either card for any reason.

I had a X-Fi once and when I found out it was a 16-bit card and not a 24-bit card like they advertise I started to look for better cards and since playing on these cards and hearing the clarity of audio (unlike X-Fi) I cant say that creative interests me at all.

Thanks Chalenge! I'll check out the b-Enspirer.

BTW, are you running on Vista?

I also tried running a couple of older drivers I was able to locate, as well as the disc that came with the computer. All of them did not recognize the sound card. The only drivers I can get to run are the two most recent from Creative and the one on Windows Update, but none of them will work for more than a half hour.

I'm trying to get this rig running for Coral Sea tomorrow but its looking less likely all the time. :(

I am wondering if the sound card is sharing an IRQ with another device in the computer.  That would expling the problems.  Sound cards do not share physical IRQ's well at all.  Creative happens to be really bad about this one.

Hi Skuzzy!

That is an intriguing idea!

How would I check for that?

In the Device Manager, its not showing any conflicts and says that it is functioning fine. Is there another way to check?

Also, is it just possible that this card is dying? The computer and card are only 7 months old but it might be possible.

Thanks!

For Vista;

You need to set the "Control Panel" to classic view.

Control Panel->Adminstrative Tools->Computer Management

Under "View", select "Resources by type", then expand "Interrupt Request" list.  Find the sound card, check its IRQ and see if any other devices are using the same IRQ.

If it was an IRQ conflict wouldn't it have occurred earlier?

Hi Skuzzy!

I check there and it shows no conflicts and that the device is working properly :(

Hi FLS! :)

Thanks!

Not neccessarily.  It depends on what it was sharing an IRQ with, if anything.

Hi Skuzzy!

Hi FLS! :)

Thanks!

Uhmmm....that list I pointed you at does not tell you the device is working properly.  It is a list of the IRQ's being used by the devices in the computer, if you did exactly what I said.

Windows is happy to allow devices to share IRQ's, but sound cards do not share IRQ's well at all.

Since you don't have a MB manual listing shared IRQs you could just try any other available slots to see if that helps.

Do I need to go through every device and check the IRQ address?

That would take a while :).

There are no exclamation points or indications of a problem in the list. I get that info when I double click on the device and it opens the driver dialog.

FLS, I didn't mention on this go around I changed the slot that the card sat in (mostly because it was right up against the vid card fan). So that changed the slot, same thing happened.

Thanks!

Oops, I left a step out.

I figured that bit out :).

The info comes from that list.

BTW, I found that both of the "High Definition Audio Controllers" installed by Vista sit on the same IRQ but I'm assuming that is because they are sound devices running through the card?

The rest of the list is too long to go through before I leave for work.

Thanks!

Which manufacturer produced your motherboard? You may have already said or it may be in the DXDIAG report but I dont know where to find it. I know from first hand experience that the ASUS P5NE-SLI and P5Q3 motherboards are unstable when running with full DIMM sockets and dual graphics cards (SLI for the P5NE and Crossfire for the P5Q3) in combination with a Creative X-Fi card especially. In fact the P5NE is only slightly more stable with a b-Enspirer card when all DIMM and PCI-e slots are populated and the reason is a combination of IRQ conflicts and power stability of the MB itself. With these two MBs it doesnt matter which OS you use.

I use Vista 64 with an eVGA 780i SLI MB with 8800 GTs in SLI and the bGears b-Enspirer and 8 GB of memory on my AH machine and its absolutely stable. In fact I bought all the 780s newegg had left. Last time I checked you could still find this MB on Amazon. I found the Ati cards were not as well suited for flight sims as Nvidia GeForce although neither one of them is a perfect fit for me ideally.

I'm not a computer builder so mine is an off the shelf Dell 630 XPS. God knows what kind of of motherboard is in there :). Hopefully they did some testing around stability.

I got the ATI cards because they would support a three screen setup.

Thanks!

You most likely have a 650i motherboard which should be very stable and capable of using either Ati or Nvidia cards. Are you sure you saw a window in the Computer Management applet like this and that your sound card was not on the same IRQ as your video cards? In my example the bGears shows up as 'C-Media Oxygen HD Audio Device' and is on IRQ 17 while the video cards 'NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT' are on IRQ 16.

The faster way to get to the applet is to right click on Computer from the desktop or Start Menu and select Manage.

Hi Chalenge!

Thanks for the visual!

That is the exact screen I saw.

In the place of your Oxygen Audio card I have Creative Sound Blaster. What I had that you don't is the two "High Definition Audio Devices" which I have disabled (tried them enabled too, no change. Also tried to uninstall them but Windows sticks them back in as fast, literally, as you can take them out).

I checked the IRQs. They are the same for the Creative and Audio Devices and all of these are different from the Video Cards (ATI).

Thanks!

Are you absolutely sure you have onboard audio defeated (disabled) in your BIOS?

Just to close this thread out with the end of the story, in case anyone ever has the same problem.

I got a new sound card thinking that could be the problem (Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional, best card that was available locally). Problem continued.

I was losing the sound anywhere from every 5 minutes to an hour. Sometimes I couldn’t even get the plane off the ground and it would quit. My vox still worked (meaning the sound card was functioning) but all the game sounds were kaput. As soon as I left the game, sound was working in Vista. Restart the game, go 5 minutes and silence. I can’t count the number of times I crashed because I couldn’t hear the buffet or wind sounds going up to compressibility.

I’d get the odd pops and pings and the sound would drop and either just quit or come back. I dropped out for about 45 minutes to let the computer cool, following a theory that somehow the card was over heating. I was just about ready to do a OS reinstall when I looked again at a piece of software that Creative makes called Alchemy. Creative ALchemy is supposed to allow you to run your favorite DirectSound3D games on Windows Vista with full hardware accelerated 3D Audio and EAX support.

I had tried it on the original sound card but it wouldn’t recognize the path to AH. On a whim, with the thought that this was a new card running on a new, different driver, I tried it again and this time it took. I popped back in to AH and flew for four hours and no quitting.

What is weird is, I’ve been using this machine for 7 months WITHOUT this piece of interim software and it has worked fine. Why it works now (or then) is a mystery, but if it works, it works.

Thanks for all the help and advice folks!

My understanding is that X-Fi cards do not use and cannot benefit from DirectSound or DirectSound 3D and are therefore unaffected by Alchemy. However if you ever get away from brand 'C' you might also see if OpenAL helps at all.

I still use the b-Enspirer but my favorite card is the HT Omega Striker 7.1 for its widerange of compatibility and stability. It does not have the bloat of brand 'C' nor the range of b-Enspirer but at 41 and 48 Khz you would would have to spend more than $200 (currently) to beat it.
