Title: P-38s....why......
Post by: Roundeye on July 13, 2009, 05:48:01 PM
does the airspeed indicator go to 700mph? :rofl

During some destructive flight testing, I did a full-power WEP vertical dive from 30K and it just would hit 500 before burning in.  It is marked well beyond the magical 400mph ugliness boundary.

The real airspeed indicator on the late lightnings went to 700.

It's a SAPP modification to allow me to see how fast I'm going when I hit the ground.

It's actually like a black box. That way when Corky augers his B-38 and tries to redeem the warranty the company can refuse based on him exceeding the recommend speed limit. Not to mention all the missing parts.

I always say a little prayer as I pass over the many craters Corky has made :pray :D

Why does my car's speedometer only go to 85 when the car does 120?

It gives the B-38 drivers an over inflated sense of their self importance and makes them think they're in a fighter.

Why does my car's speedometer only go to 85 when the car does 120?

Because it's probably a domestic car made in the 80's? :D

I had a '85 Buick Grand National with digital dash and the speedo flashed at 85.

Have you never enjoyed the P38 thorax? It's created when all your parts are shot off :aok It will do about 900 mph straight down when free of the drag restraints of wings and engs and tail etc etc. :aok

Yes it is.  1986 Pontiac Fiero SE V6 (1985 GT body style).

Yes, TwinBoom is correct. 600mph is the funzone.  Bailing out at 600mph is even better. :aok

:x I have to try bailing at 600 mph.

Technically speaking the higher number is only used to indicate blender RPM. I checked and your not S.A.P.P. Certified so that is all I can say at this point.

same reason mine only goes to 140, when she's been pretty far past that?

Don't pick on Cap.... his pants legs only go to his ankles. I told him he might try loosening his suspenders. He replied... "can I do that?".

By "400mph ugliness boundary" I mean the violient shaking and near compression (unless you are at a low alt.)  I've gotten it to 500 by WEP diving it from 30,000 feet and leveling just above the trees (1500 where I tried it) and I had to fly it off of trim only until it dropped below about 475.

I suppose if you started at 35-40K and dove to sea level one could see over 500, but you were surely using trim as a primary means of survival b/c your controls would be useless.

I still think its funny that the ASI goes to 700. :lol

Experienced P-38 drivers in this game can reach speeds up to 500mph and maneuver without resorting to using trim.  Sure, controls are rather sluggish at those speeds but you can still maneuver.

You don't need to dive from 30-40k to reach 500mph+ in the P-38.  You can hit that speed from dives at 10,000ft, just unload to accelerate at the beginning of the dive and you'll quickly hit 500mph and again, don't need to use trim to recover.

There are quite a few of us that routinely get our P-38s up to those speeds and never have a worry about compressability.  YMMV.

I easily get a couple mph over 500 from just over 10k.  I'm sure I have films of fights involving those speeds on the squad site.

If you have time one evening, I would like you to show me how you do this in the TA.  If you don't mind doing so, please PM me.

I've been playing a few years, but have little experience with the P-38 (obviously).  I love them but HATE how easy pilot wounds are to get in those ....and their comparatively low compressability......that's mainly why I stay out of them.

just do like i do.

when someone locvks up on your 6, flop around like a fish outta water. they'll shoot big really important parts off your 38 sooooooo frakkin fast, that you won't get time to get a pilot wound.  :rofl :aok :O :x

I'll keep that in mind, though I seldom need help getting big parts ripped off....I do that just fine on my own.  :o :D
