You can not fly with a keyboard alone. Check HERE (http://trainers.hitechcreations.com/mouse/mouse.htm) to set up a mouse to fly. While flying with a mouse is possible, and some people do well, a $30 joystick will make it much easier, and a lot more fun.

There are a couple of really good sticks in my squad that fly with a mouse.  It can be done and done well.  They'd both eat me up easily 1 v 1

I used to fly with a mouse, but it is so much easier to use a stick. Get a St290 Pro.

Yes, you can fly with a game pad.  However, I would recommend a game pad that allows you to program the individual buttons on it.  AH will have no problems seeing the axis of the thumb sticks.

When I first started playing, I used to play with a PS2 equivalent game pad..  It worked GREAT for GV's, gunning, as well as Bombing due to everything being centrally located on the game pad, but the thumb sticks lacked the accuracy and finesse of a joystick for any remotely serious ACM..  Flying without the stall limiter was certain death..

All the buttons on my game pad were velocity sensitive..  For instance, I would press down lightly to fire the primary guns and press down firmly to fire all guns..
One the buttons I'd use for throttle, pressing down firmly on the top or bottom button(forget the letters associated with them) would effectively put me at full throttle or chop it to idle..
If I applied lighter pressure, I could actually adjust it up or down.  Hit another button(sort of like shift) would turn the same buttons into RPM..

Ah!  I found it after doing a quick search of my desk..  Here's what I used to use..  You could spend about the same amount of money and get a half-way decent stick..

That's the stick I use. It's really good IMO. Does the job well and it's comfortable. It's only $20 or less at Wal-Mart.

Everytime I see that avatar I wonder where the heck you work!!

I work for Canteen Vending out of Woburn so I hit lots of spots repairing machines all over the state. I just keep thinking "I wonder if I walked by this guy and didn't even know it?" ahh Well, here's to bumping into you !  :aok

i used to fly with a mouse, but he got caught under my rudder pedal when i was making a hard turn. it got kinda messy in the cockpit, so i don't take anytning onboard now.

It is actually a little known fact that Delirium uses nothing but a keyboard and a mean stare to control his place.

Some of the best pilots in the game play with a mouse and keyboard, but whatever your preference is go for it.

You "can" fly with a mouse. You "can" also amputate your own leg and get around on crutches.

There is no substitute for a joystick.

Given equal skills (saying you cloned the exact pilot) the pilot with the joystick will own the pilot with the mouse.

The reason you hear of these great sticks flying with a mouse is because they are great sticks. The skill level overcomes the skill level of their opponents. Put them on joysticks and they would be more potent.

Mouse control limits your abilities, limits your input controls.

That's my opinion, and I know it's shared by many others also.
