On our events site I want to put up three examples of CiC orders for C.O.s to view, especially new CiCs. Giving them several examples of orders will help them understand what is required. Might even help some that have been around a while.
My plan is to put up 3 examples, but I may use more.
1st Simple straight forward orders that allow C.O.s to make most of the calls.
2nd Orders that have some specifics, but allow for the C.O.s to make some calls.
3rd Orders that have detail and specific directions to follow and may require coordination between supporting squads.
This is where you guys come in. :) If you would like to sit down one evening this week and work on some orders using the information below. I may use them on the events site as an example. I cant of course promise yours will be used, but I will appreciate any and all I receive. We have seen some orders that are highly detailed and others that are quite simple. They all can work.
Lets say for example on your Allied side you have the following 12 squads at your disposal.
68th Lightning Lancers (16-21)
325th Checkertails (11-15)

Nightmares VMF-101 (11-15)
USMC / 71sqn (11-15)

Ummmmm! Question DD, Who in the heck are these 333rd guys? Sorry I had to :x :salute
-
DD,
I think I've still got copies of the two scenarios I CiC'ed, including the Battle of the Bulge scenario with the GV assault. I know it's not using the information you outlined, but I can send them for you to take a look and see if they fit what you're looking for.
-
DD, I'll volunteer to help with this.
-
Oh sure, noooow we get something like this :D :D :D
This will be helpful. Im actually diggin this CiC thing a bit.
-
It dose help for the new guys. been wanting to be CiC for on frame.
-
;) J5
Thanks Sax. I have had several offers of other orders. Send them to me. What I may end up doing is after getting the 3 sample orders I can have links to others that a new CiC could get ideas from.
Thanks Stoney. :aok
lol Sorry Texas, but better late then never. ;) Glad you enjoy the CiC end of it, many do.
-
This is a great idea. Always good to have some samples or see what has been done before when trying to create your own battle plans.
Its been a while since I have done CiC work but I think I will take a stab at this to. :)
-
Looks like a fun challenge. I'll do one also maybe two. One for the ideal way. The second for what not to do. That will be the fun one to do.
-
DD,
Check your e-mail.
:salute
-
Check your e-mail for my orders from frame 3 High Blue battle DD.. <S> TUK
Do you want objectives as well? I just sent ,warning order, orders, and map... :salute
Pst. <<< thinks have the best map-tool ever! .. shhh

To go further I would suggest that a couple of things be done.
1. Assign a senior squad to mentor new CiC's There is alot more involved to making orders than just writing them.
For instance we typically compile info on a spreadsheet including ride requested, min and max squad numbers, ride each squad had in last one or 2 frames etc.
Then we handle the minimum ride numbers etc. This is something that would take time to put in writing but would probably help.
2. I suggest that it be a rule in FSO that no new CiC be assigned to Frame 1 since it's the hardest one to do. Frame 2 and 3 typically can use the first one as a template and make things easier.

Daddog, sent my sample orders to you via email. :salute
-
Got several in my in box. Thanks guys! :) I hope to look them over this week and the links posted in this thread.

Does this mean we will see how the different ways various players put together the battle plans? Kinda cool to see the comparisons.
-
Yes I think it will. :)

DD great idea especially for new squads and new CIC's to the game. :salute
Good examples are one thing and there are plenty of replies from the guys above that have published some really good Op Orders in the past. I'll send a couple of mine to you as well.
I recommend a "sample" fill in the blank Op Order or perhaps just a fill in the blank "Task Org.". This would provide a basic level for a new guy to meet avoiding 45 page Op Orders and 48 hours of work, but also helping to avoid the Op Orders who's plan starts with "Get'em boys", get published Thursday night at midnight and lack the critical information required to coordinate multi-squad operations.
The graphics the the most important part of the Op Order however. A really good set of operational graphics saves a lot of writing and questions from the peanut gallery. For this a sample graphics sheet would be a good idea with a "check sheet" on what basic information a graphics sheet should have. And quick "How do I make these" using MS Paint.
A good Graphics sheet and a Good Task Org list are all you really need in a pinch and would serve as a "base" standard.
In short FSO Op Orders 101.
Also this would probably initiate a basic standard or format to the FSO Op Orders across the board. Which won't be a bad idea either.

Here's an example I put together when I was running
the LCA's FSO Operations (now in the very capable hands
of HighTone). :aok
This is from a while ago when I was CiC on 4/26/06.
http://david.tenifer.com/aceshigh/pdf/FSO58.pdf
You can view a slideshow of the event here:
http://david.tenifer.com/aceshigh/LCA.Operations.php
(scroll down to the bottom for link)
The next frame I did something similar but only for
my squadron. I use various flavors of this format
for UK and JP based missions as well. I figure the
extra effort helps players "Get In The Mood". :)
Were I to do FSO again for the LCAAF (I'll fly the
Space Shuttle before THAT happens!) I would write
these up again but I would also create a video briefing
for participating squadron commanders for immersion
sake...if I could get the materials I needed in time....
and that is the biggest issue with being CiC.
I may do something like that for one of my Missions-of-the-Month
though just to see how it turns out. ;)
Anyway, with respect to being FSO CiC, by far the biggest headache
with creating orders is getting decent maps that you can annotate
and edit as needed for your missions. I have asked that these maps
be gathered together in one place so both squadron C.O.'s and CiC's
can have quick acces to them but to my knowledge this has yet to be
done.
That, and not getting the campaign orders on a timely basis
is one of the reasons I hung up my CiC hat way back when.
I got tired of trying to pull the rabbit out of my hat at the
last minute.
Your mileage may vary. Good luck!
-
Thanks Delta!
I have quite a few to go over. Will be a slow process. I appreciate the links. :aok
-
Glad to help Daddog. :)
Here's something else that might help future
armchair generals of the sky!
One of the difficulties of being CiC is the task of organizing
your assets so you can readily grasp what resources you have
to work with. Once you can accomplish that, assigning your
forces and composing a cogent battle plan becomes
far easier.
To make aggregating this data less troublesome I created a
worksheet that allows me to get a clearer picture of what I have
at my disposal and how best to utilize these forces to accomplish
the mission. Using this document alongside the map of
the scenario makes doing this a snap. You can download it here:
http://david.tenifer.com/aceshigh/pdf/CiCWorksheet.pdf
After working out the details using this form I can
very easily compose a nifty set of orders for the country
I am commanding. I hope all CiC's find it as useful. :salute
Finally, I publish the orders as a pdf document and send them
via email to my squadron commanders. I use pdf files so
that the document displays the same on everyone's computer
and to make forwarding it to their pilots easier. If you don't
have Adobe Acrobat installed, you can still create pdf's
from your home computer by downloading PrimoPDF. Its free.
You can find PrimoPDF here:
