A detailed, functional artificial human brain can be built within the next 10 years, a leading scientist has claimed. He told the TED global conference in Oxford that a synthetic human brain would be of particular use finding treatments for mental illnesses. Around two billion people are thought to suffer some kind of brain impairment, he said. "It is not impossible to build a human brain and we can do it in 10 years," he said.

Why do we always have to try and cure/fix people? Why can't we just let them be? I mean come on humans are supposed to have some screwed up qualities and parts. We should just move on and let it be. It might be natures way of trying to have a massive colon cleanse of the earth!

We try to cure/fix people because sometimes they are not particularly functional as-is, and sometimes they are dangerous to themselves or others as-is.
That's why we don't let it be.

I'm sure people with mental disabilities would really appreciate that sentiment. Even with all the advances "they ""claim" they "will make in 10yrs (ill beleive it when I see it) there will still be plenty of screwed up people in the world.
I always question scientists when "they" say something like this. Nobody knows what advances we will make in 10yrs. In the late 60's "they" said we would have bases on the moon and mars by now. I dunno exactly who "they" are but, more times than not "they" are full of BS

What good would a brain replacement do for a mentally ill person? That's equivalent to killing the patient to cure the disease.

I'm with Reschke on this one. We think we are so important but really we are just the brightest fire in the forrest that burns till the fuel is exhausted overpowering all other flames as it spreads then dies without the universe even noticing.

We don't choose whether we live, or we die. We are how we are and it will be so for as long as we go. By "we" i mean all of the human species. Humans are smart, so far the smartest on the face of the earth, although i will admit i find a bug smarter than us for it seems they, or any other species but humans, are not to blame for what is going on now.
Yes, we excel past anything God may have thought. No, he does not know everything, our future is our choice as we see fit to make it. If you think he knows so much, then why by all that he means for us has he not stopped our stupidity? We are a so called "freak" accident. So be it, we turned out to be better and worse than most.
For now, we are still primitive. Especially when you can imagine there are other "freak" accidents in so many other worlds. But artificial life that will surpass us? That is ridiculous, we cannot allow it. I can understand something to take our minor annoying details of our daily life, such as cook or clean.
Otherwise my answer is that if you are to die, may it happen. We are already doing the worst imaginable to this earth. Overpopulation, pollution, theft, death, disease, etc. The least we can do is get rid of ourselves one by one naturally. There will be more of us to take that place.

That is a point of view that has to be acknowledged. I've often wondered if most of what we call mental disorder is a healthy reaction to a sick, sick world.

All things being equal I would agree with you.
Introduce foods laden with chemicals, chemicals in our air, chemicals in our water...we are NOT able to evolve as fast as we are killing ourselves.
Know anyone with an auto immune disorder? Chances are if you are younger (less than 40 something) chances are you WILL develop one. Why? They have no idea. But I can tell you that we are pushing ourselves faster than we can go. Mental illness is debilitating and as crushing to people and their families as any disease including cancer. At least with cancer you have hope that something can be done, with auto immune issues or mental illnesses, docs are TOTALLY clueless and just throw expensive meds at people who rarely see any results.

No. We are, changing fast enough. Not all chemicals are harmful to us. If anything humans accelerate the process.

Interesting...definatly IF (and thats a big friggin IF ) would you still have a soul? yes all your memories and experiences are there but is your soul? does your memories and experiences = the sum of WHO you are?
another thought- what if in the d/l process you get a fw corrupted files? can you just remove program? reboot and all is well?

I've actually been throwing around ideas for a work of fiction based on this excact premise for a couple of years. The thought of "soul" would definitely play a major role role in it. The idea originally came to me when I was playing with my Line6 computer software.

Bernard Williams wrote a great article about brain switching, body switching and personal identity.
Talking about a soul here makes this topic sound like a campy hollywood movie.
