You Tempist afficiandos? Throw us some tips on flying them. Ive only upped them a few times and you dont see a whole lot of them in the air often.
Exactly why do they have such insane K/D rates? :salute
-
Fly really high. Watch for enemy planes who are already engaged. Swoop down. Run at the first sign of trouble.
Does that pretty much cover it? Seems like that is how most folks use them. Personally, I don't fly them. :D

Because they're the best BnZ/pick/run plane in the game. Good dive, high speed, superb insta-kill gun package. Don't mean to be an bellybutton but that's the way it is.
-
Dave pretty much covered it. The only thing the Tempest does well is pick and run. Even in a high speed fight, if I can get that Tempest to start turning he's dead.
-
If people weren't so terrified of losing perks, I think the Tempest's reputation would change.

This, basically.
A F4U-4, Spitfire Mk XIV, La-7 or Bf109K-4 will all beat one if it tries to play.

But the Temp is the fastest right? Assuming he doesnt blow his "E"?
How does its high speed handling compare to other speed kings?
-
Yes, the Temp is amazingly fast and has a deadly gun package. But even folks that are aware of these facts do often still underestimate the plane and think oft it as just a faster Typhoon.
Which it isn't. It has a much better handling, most notably roll rate and turn radius. It't still no Spitfire but is CAN fight, not only pick.

The F4U-4 does have a better high speed handling and does outturn you by a huge margin. You really have to be very very careful around that bird as a Temp driver. You have better sustained climb rate, but the F4U-4s zoom climb capability may deny you that advantage. You are considerably faster (~30mph) at around 5-7k, but really using this speed advantage may lead to what many would call "weak flying". Above ~18k, the F4U-4 pwns you in almost every way. But even below I wouldn't recommend any close-quarter dogfight, you most probably will get slaughtered very quick.
Against Spit XIV:
You are faster up to about 8k, slower from 8-14k, faster again from 14-21k. Try to memorize that stuff. The 14 is one of the few planes capable of outaccelerating the Tempest, and climbs much better at any altitude. But the 14 has two distinct disadvantages high speed handling sucks, in a very fast dive it's roll rate is pretty much nil, use that advantage against the Spit. Surprising ly to most players, the Spit 14's tunring radius is only slightly smaller... many occasional Spit 14 pilot do actually lose a turning contest with a Tempest.
And, last but not least, the Tempest is a much more stable gun platform. The wobbling nose of the Spit may save your Tempest from time to time. ;)
La-7:
Outturns you,has about the same climb rate, acceleration also about on par. You are faster, but only about 10mph at most altitudes which isn't that much. But there's special altitude I want to call your attention on: from abut 6 to 8.5k your Tempest is faster on MIL than a La-7 on WEP. If you like insulting PMs and derogatory comments on 200, you may drag the greedy LA until it's fuel runs out. But of course that's really weak. Still, I do it from time to time :)
109K-4:
Against the LA you tried to keep the fight away from deck, against the K-4, go LOW.
Your high speed dive is much better then the 109's which suffers from control stiffness above ~450mph. On the deck, you are not only faster (an advantage that lasts up to ~8k), but your climb rate is also on par (but only up to ~1.5k). Your turn radius with and without flaps is actually smaller than a 109 (Again this is often not known to many players], but the advantage isn't big enough to call it a decisive edge. It basically boils down to pilot skill.

Thanks Lusche. Great post.

Ty, but I would wait a bit for some additional opionions. I'm not the master of ACM in Aces High, so I may be wrong on a point or two
The Tempest just happens to be the plane I have most kills in. ;)

Any F4U if you let him get close, you're dead, the Corsairs just turn and roll too well at all speeds. The F4U-4 just has the added advantage of being able to force the issue.

You rarely see one in the MA actually fighting. I am guessing this is mostly because of the perk cost but its not a terrible plane slow, IMO its actually a very capable plane (no spit).
-
Just for the record, a well flown Tempest will beat an equally well flown Spit14 in a low-speed stall fight...
My regards,
Widewing

The Tempest Pilots I've run into at 20K or above seemed to be misinformed on their speed at that altitude.
I've seen them as high as 28K recently. (Me being in an N Jug at the time) The Tempest and Typhoon seem to have
their best performance in the 17K area. Their performance seems to suffer when going higher then 17K.
The Tempest was not the high alt fighter that the Jug, P51, Ta152, and F4U4 were...I know I'm missing a few more.
-
i would definitely agree that if it did not cost so many perkies, its stats in the game would be very different, and i don't think that in a bad way!
i like to fight with it in the DA, i fly it basically the same way as i fly the jug!
get alt, get E, find a target or two , never turn more times than my e will allow, unless you are alone with your target, and know what your target is capable of !
the funny thing is that the jug doesnt have a bad rep. for being flown in its groove.

I think because someone that is flying the Tempest the same way as a "reasonable" flown jug is staying very much on the safe side while his plane would allow him far more risks than that.
Jugs are great fighting & killing machines, but if they run out of steam they run into a LOT more trouble than a Tempest. Unlike the Jug, the Temp is among the fastest accelerating fighters in Aces High, it's way more capable than just to BnZ.
That being said, I mostly use the Temp exactly the way. Now flying it alot less than i used to have 2 years ago, I usually roll the Temps when there's an all red darbar over a friendly base. And even in a Tempest I have to be very careful about my E and keep SA up in such a situation.
But I think, I will take the Tempest up again as my general-purpose fighter in September (tour 116) to see what I'm able to do with it ;)

Don't know if you wanted any film but here is an unedited tempest run from the other day. Its quite long so you can fast forward through anything that doesnt interest you. Highlights include slow fighting with the flaps out and a really nice 'one-turn' reversal on someone's spitfire near the end. It's quite a plane.

The Tempest is a beast. Like alot of other people has said, it can fly fast, and if need be, can turn good too. Sitting in the nose of the plane is a 2000+ horse power Napier Sabre engine. The wings are different from the Typhoon, as the Tempest has a Laminar flow wing more closely related to the Mustang. 4 20mm Cannons pack excellent firepower to bring anything down. Great view in the cockpit. Be sure to take external tanks to extend the range. I say the best altitude is around 6k-10k. Anything above that and your starting to get the plane out of its best ares. This is one great plane, and flown right, will keep you out of trouble.

Most temp aces will degress away to 5.5k from target, grab some alt nose back and come around, most targets wont stick around if they figure the temps is a runa'way jocky, only to get nailed in the back while searching for other targets.
icon range is always a fun thing to mess with, youd be surprised how many pilots will not chase a target after loosing contact in icon range, 262's use the same tactic, altho more to keep up speed and get a nose around with that speed, and that require long slow turns.

temp aces

I think it's more a matter of opponents thinking, "Do I let this Tempest drag me out to where his friends can dogpile me, or do I turn around and see if he'll come back in so I can make an attempt to reverse on him when he tries to HO" while simultaneously trying to grab a little more altitude to narrow the Tempest's positional advantage.
If an enemy in a faster plane is running from me, I NEVER turn my back on him without one eye open to my rear.
