I think seaplanes would be very usefull in the game. After all swordfish seaplanes did a big part in the sinking of the Bismark. I will write more later about the subject.
-
The Swordfish was not a sea plane in that it had no float.

I suggest you read before you write, tonight. ;)

He is going to watch the dogfight's episode on the sinking of the Bismark. :D
-
You watch dogfights yourself?
-
Not my favorite but its interesting, very biased towards the Americans IMO.
-
I think one swordfish topic from you was enough :D

How would they be useful?
What would they be used for? What would they do?
Please work on this over the weekend and submit a detailed report with footnotes and sources by Monday.
Thank you.

biplanes are move very well so it easy to dodge incomign fighters. They are slow also so it means the enemy would only have a second to fire. I will write more on it later. :salute

Now, that is just ignorant.
Skuzzy, lock this now.
Borrowed from Denholm: (Happy?) :P

Well done, Sir JPEG.
Ruler2, if they're not nice countries, why is anyone getting out of those said countries? You need to wake up and smell the Earth's crust. There's more to life than your red, white, and blue underwear.
-
lol,if I'm acting ignorant, would you mind telling me why they all want to come here to get away from their countries?
Are they? Are they?

Looking forward to this.

and a  to how this evolved into this!

Me thinks those who are not making a positive contribution to this thread need a timeout.

Sea planes would rock.
I would love to see the Pete, Kingfisher, PBY, or best yet the Kawanishi H8K, "Emily" just to name a few. The Emily had 5, 20mm guns!
-
PBY Catalina perhaps? Flyin' boat
-
Right now there's no need for scouting. So there isn't much use for a PBY aside from its small payload of bombs.
-
If i recall from what i saw on dogfights the a6m had a version with floats. Maybe that could be usefull....
-
The A6M2-N is what your talking about, as far as usefulness... just an over-weighted Zeke from what I've seen. Fly an A6M2 at 75% throttle for max and you'll get about the same effect I'd imagine.

Some did....

Actually the Rufe's peformance wasn't degraded that much from the Zeke. It would prove effective against it's 1941/42 counterparts.

That's actually rather surprising. I'm skeptical but I have nothing to back it up so I'll leave it at that.

+1 :aok
Seaplanes, flying boats, amphibious aircraft, what ever they are called...
It would be nice to have representations of these types in Aces High.
I could imagine PBYs available only from ports and serving in roles similar to the C47. Also, the Catalina did some anti-ship missions, so perhaps they could have a limited bombing role as well.
This is a bit of a stretch, but maybe you could pick up a downed pilot, to turn a captured into a rescued?
What else?

You can find a few pages about the Rufe on the web. Of course it wasn't as nimble as the A6M2, but it was still effective until better Allied fighters became operational.

One of your country's ports is under attack.
Most defenders are coming from an Afield some 20 miles away.
But what if you could up that Rafe (A6m on floats) from that port for defense.
Wouldn't you? I know I would.
As to the flying boats, its been the one big piece of the puzzle that I personally have been wanting since back in the 90's.
I keep thinking that one of these days HTC is going to be able to do it.
I don't care if they are hanger queens. (some of them were armed better than the B17)
I don't care if we don't have a true recon role for them.
I think they would add to immersion. And they would just be cool to fly.
-
If you could take them off from ports, then I could actually see a nice use for them. Maybe the A6M2-N wouldn't be a bad start then since it'd probably be easy enough to model with the existing A6M2. Although I have to admit that it would be cool to get an H8K.

that has to be the ugliest "plane" I have ever seen.

Perhaps. I'll venture it was a beautiful sight to pilots who bailed in the south pacific.
-
Are we sure that plane is flying, or was it dropped from the belly of a heavy bomber?
