Title: V sync
Post by: FOGOLD on July 31, 2009, 02:10:42 PM
How comes I havn't disabled v sync (as reccomended) but still get framerates above the monitor's default of 60. Sometimes in hundreds.Old version stick at 60 unless v sync was disabled??

Getting little stutters still even though fr seems fine.

Have you forced it off in the video card's control panel?

I have been led to believe that V-Sync should be forced on to alleviate a problem with the "rubber Bullet" syndrome.  Skuzzy  should it be forced on or forced off?

It should be set to application controlled.  The game will turn it on.

Thanks for the prompt reply Skuzzy. :salute

I heard of this happening with SLI setups, are you running one by chance?

NVidia's SLI forces vsync off.  I am not sure if that is simply their preferred method to run, or if it is required to be off for SLI to work properly.

Sorry I've been away. Thanks for the replies. I do indeed have sli 8800GT's much against my better judgement. Drivers are set to app controlled but if SLI forces V sync off that would explain it. I'll investigate firther. The box is definitely left UNCHECKED in the video settings. I know it's not good to have v sync off. Maybe thats why I can't hit anything lol (as if!) :)

Thanks again

Forced V sync ON in Nvidia Control panel for AH. Still FR exceeds monitor refresh. I'll try again later.

I pulled out my second 8800 GTS for this very reason and returned it.  No vsync was terribly annoying.

I was pulling 280+ fps but the screen tearing/stuttering because of it wasn't worth it.  I could not find a way to enable vsync in SLI.

This reinforces my general anti sli feeling. I thought I would try it since 880's were so cheap. Most games seem ok but I don't think the performance is anything like double.

SLI is extremely expensive for only a marginal gain in performance.

Turned SLI off in drivers for AH only and that fixed it. Pity to have to forfeit that GPU horsepower though. :frown:

Managed to force vsync on with triple buffering also set to on. Seems to have fixed frame rate to monitor refresh without disabling SLI.  Still get micro stutters in game when encountering other people. Went back to 512 textures and no AA which has helped a bit. Ping is 150-170 which it has always been.

Skuzzy I think the vsync off is directly related to split-frame rendering somehow which sounds like a very bad idea as a setting for AH.

Does NVidia have an alternate frame rendering option when using SLI?  Running without vsync enabled is not a good idea.

I'll check. Just to be clear I am running with v sync enabled and forced in nvidia control panel.

Yes you can set it for split-frame rendering or alternate frame rendering (2 modes). I tend to believe that split-frame rendering is a really bad idea in AH.

Split-frame rendering is a bad idea in general.
