was just wondering about effective range of guns on different AC. reason i ask is, i was just playing and was hit and, given a pilot wound from a dora at over 1k. film shows 1.2k. now just to be clear, I AM NOT MAKING ANY ACCUSATIONS. i am just curious, because i have never been able to land hits over 1k, and i have never been hit from over 1k.

i've been pinged from 1.5 when attacking buffs. i've hit guys at 1k+ in my p38.......but i think those hits were luck.
i've nailed guys at over 2k from field guns.....but again, i was lucky.

i've hit AC from 1k, but they were flying straight and level. just adjusted my lead.

I've hit guys several times from 1k with a P38. Mossie guns will reach out and touch ya too. I don't fly the German iron , but my understanding is the ballistics kind of suck for long range shots.

.50s have a long reach, I've routinely taken out planes as far as d1.0 with the Ma Deuce.

Hit Warlocks fuel in his 1A with a G14, over 1K. That was last month.

1.5 single hit kill on a P47 in an i-L2 with 37mm cannons. One tap of the trigger, 2 shells fired, 2 shells hit, one in each wing. I'm sure he's falling out of the sky going "WTH just happened?"
Its possible, but it won't happen often.

From what angle was he firing? Dead 6? Head on?
I seem to recall a discussion sometime in the distant past that explained the bullets "lasted" a given distance through the air -- thus buffs could hit a trailing fighter from a relative distance at which the fighter couldn't hit the buffs, simply because of the physics of the trailing plane closing the distance to the firing point. Just wondering if angle could have come into play?
If not, there is also the lag issue (think collision threads). He may have seen you as closer in his "reality" and been able to hit you at a range that you wouldn't normally think possible.
That being said, might be worth some testing by someone with a bit longer atten
ooh shiny things!

The emphasis here is basically that the maximum range that the weapon can reach out and touch somebody is much, much further than the range at which you can touch somebody effectively.

Also seems to be a bit further than you can see the tracer as well.
