This would seem more appropriate here then in the Tech Support forum, and it may help.
I’m going to become very familiar with the Graphic buttons at this rate.
When I first load into Coralsea in the SEA, the message buffer reports Disabling advanced graphic settings ‘Detailed Terrain’. The frame rates report as 59, but take a look at the terrain in the first screen shot. As a terrain builder, I’m never going to use those settings. In fact, I use 1024 textures and I’m willing to suffer the fps hits.
In the second screen shot, you see what happens when I recheck ‘Detailed Terrain’. The frame rates fall to half, 30, stabilizing at 40 fps. This won’t be very playable along the coastlines or over a base but look what happens in screen shot 3 when I simply toggle ‘Detailed Water’. First on, then back off. I wait about 30 seconds at each setting to see results, but after turning it off again, I’m up to 51 fps and Cnt=0 with the clipboard hidden. This is similar to the rates I was seeing before this last patch, patch 3.
(Screen shots taken in CM eye. Dxdiag included)
Screen Shot 1 - the terrain looks terrible.
Screen Shot 2 - good looking terrain but fps are ~30.
Screen Shot 3 - after toggling 'Detailed Water', the frame rates are back up to 51 with the clipboard hidden.

my machine runs the game just fine but has always taken a few seconds to get rolling, now with the last patch, it goes and disables stuff right away, so every time i come into the game i must open the advanced setting and change it back,
i wonder if a longer time period before it starts turning things off would not help, or a way to disable this option for those of us that are having this problem?
i can change it if need be but every time i switch arena's it will get old!
maybe an option to test your system for best performance by pushing a button, instead of it automatically doing it on its own?
-
Don't worry whiskey, that system is ment for people who have an fps so slow, they could not configure it themselves. If it is only startup time, we can fix that for next patch.

I am thankful i am not the only one having this problem.

I'm wondering if there's any way to stop the lockup. This never happened before. I have good fps but the game locks and then the message lost udp switch to tcp, but it still locks. I've tried several tips from the boards but the same results. never had tis before.

Brooke pointed out that upon 1st entering the arena while the preloaded textures are loading up, the game is slow to allow the framerate to stabilize. thus disabling the Detailed Terrain checkbox
this newest patch: AH2.14 patch 3 mentioned the following bugfix:
Detailed graphics options will deselect if a system runs at an extremely low frame-rate for more than 10 seconds. A message will display if this occurs.
I found that once everything preloads or loads, going in to the advanced settings, turning the Detailed Terrain and other sub categorys below back on.....
my frame rates stablized and stayed maxed out ( I tested this 3 times in a row logging in, and it worked the same each time )
I wonder if what whiskey asked:
i wonder if a longer time period before it starts turning things off would not help
will possibly work........ quiet a few people reported this same "supposed problem" today in the Coral Sea Scenario Frame#2
is not a problem per say, more of a inconvenience....

I have an old system & video card, so I can't run the game except in Bump map mode. My frame rates in any hi res texture format drop to 2-3 fps or less. It's been this way since the switch from the old 2.12rev3 to the new hi res versions.
When I run the .exe, the splash screen loads, then everything grinds to a halt when the clipboard starts to appear. My fps drops to 1 frame every 5 seconds. My mouse curser basically disappears.
I can hunt for the offline start key to get the game running, but it's still running at 1 frame every 5 seconds. When I manage to get to the video graphic details button, suddenly everything is fine when I just click on the button. I can then go online. The graphics detail is set to bump map. But, it seems as though the game starts in a hi res mode, then switches to bump map mode at some point in the game engine cycle.
Is there any way around this method of getting the game up and running? Is there some ini or config file for the graphics that I can set?

What is happening is the game is having to allocate and load all the data it needs to run. You might want to check your background processes as it seems you have a lot of data in the Windows page/swap file, which is usually an indicator of processes running in the background sucking the computer resources down pretty low.
