i put up some pdf into the net from the naca. They tested a spit5A, Hurri2, Mossi. The tests are basically about flying characteristics, not turn times or climb rates.
Furthermore 2 reports about the naca test methods

I hope you have a good scan machine at work like me, because scanning 50 pages manually would be a lot of work... (it took me actually more time to remove the brackets from the reports than to scan it lol)
I recommend to scan them as tif (i used black and white and 200dpi), because this format can store multiple images in one file. You simply drag the multi-image tif-file on the acrobat icon and it´ll be automatically converted

I have copies of manuals that were developed by the Air Materiel Command for the captured Fw 190G, Me 262, and A6M2.  Snafu provided me with scans of Pilot's Notes for several RAF aircraft.  I also have a translation of a manual for the Fw 190A-8.

Hi Niklas,

thanks for the reports!

Here's what's puzzling me: The maximum lift coefficient for the Spitfire power on, gear up, flaps up, in a climb is given as 1.64 in report L-353 (if that's the ID), yet the maximum lift coefficient reached in a turn is given as 1.21 in turns and about 1.28 in pull-ups in L-354.

Do you have idea what's responsible for this difference? I'd have thought the higher value should also have been attainable in turns.

i would think the angle of the wind hitting the wing would be the cause

Also some Max Cl's are listed with with prop wash and some without.

With the speed being higher in a turn, the propwash velocity is lower.

"This value of maximum lift coefficient is closer to that reached fraom stalls in straight flight with power off than the value reached with power on because the slipstream effects in high speed turns are relatively small"  :)

Furthermore, they couldn´t do a stall test in a straight level fligth with power on (cruising). I think that they had to pull the aircraft up into a little zoom or climb to stall it for this condition. And a little climb or zoom immediatly reduce your stall speed a bit. But Cl is very senitive to the stall speed, it´s a function of v^2. This is maybe another reason why they reached very high Cl values for the power on condition. I´ve a report for a F2A-3 where they reached Clmax values higher than 3.0 with flaps down and high power settings... I´m really wondering myself why they didn´t make a correction for the angle.

Hi everyone,

thanks for the explanations!

I think I was mislead by the Spitfire's best climb speed which was in the same region as the speeds tested in turns and pullups - but of course it's achieved at a far lower cl, with the clmax being achieved only near the stall.
