i haven't even seen the new planes yet.
the thing is FRAKKIN AWSOME looking. as i climb through the haze, it looks like the haze over south jersey.
at about 5k alt, when i look down at the ground, it looks real now.
just everything.

1. The new shorelines, I hated the old nickle shorelines.
For the rest, you have to see the new coralsea terrain, loaded in SEA II earlier today.
Here are abilities demonstrated in coralsea...
2. See the Great Barrier Reef off the east coast of Australia.
3. See the atolls north of the eastern tip of New Guinea, they look like satellite shots.
4. See the natural looking shoreline around Port Moresby (P13).
These are abilities to enhance the terrain that we didn't have before. I don't know when or if you'll see them in the MA, but the special arenas are going to look much better as soon as we learn how to take advantage of this.
-
hey easyscor, is the download on the website updated for the new Coral Sea map? The arena's locked, for Coral Sea I would assume.
-
The Super Nintendo graphics.

We lost a great many things.
LOST
beach obstacles
hedges
decent ground clutter - someone even slaughtered all the sheep!
(looks like I'm driving across the sargasso sea when I'm in a GV)
structures and terrain for GV's
hills (can't find any, but that might just be me)
wakes (unless you can run the game with details)
decent water (with detail turned down the tiling looks hideous)
trouble-free performance
I'm, sorry to say this but the terrain is far less interesting
now. It looks kike a photo from the sky but thats about it
and the price to obyain it was, imho, too high.
Here's what trading in those things and completely shafting
the GV guys yielded:
GAINED
shiny water with kewl reflections (if you can run at that level)
2 planes (that didn't require an entire upgrade to get, BTW)
headaches
anything I missed here??
So, was the trade-off worth it? Not for me.
I have upgrade fatigue and won't be buying any
new hardware for my PC. Personally, I'm hoping
Dale & crew will figure out a way to make it work
across his client base, and not just for those who
can afford to build a PC around a game.
In a way, I should be grateful that my enjoyment
of the game is suffering with this downgrade..
maybe now I'll finally be able to break this insidious
addiction!

I love the new water. Everything about the new terrain system is sweet. Can't wait til the release the new Terrain Editor. :aok
-
Getting into a low turn fight over the sea with a Spit 8 and having half a dozen P51s auger in quick succession as they try to pick you, then having the Spit 8 driver break off.
He was probably laughing as hard as me.

I like the new graphics. I turned off the shiney water thing cause it blinded me during a dogfight over water. Frame rate went up to a steady 50 to 60 fps with no stutter.
Would I trade the new graphics for a new TU-2 and a perked bomber? Like the A-26?
Yeah..probably. While I love the new look I think upgrades of existing aircraft, and modeling of plane set gaps, should be priority #1. The 239 and I-16 probably wont end up Queens but I still would have done other planes.
My opinion only. Which probably aint worth a nickle.

just out of curiosity, but you sure do make a lot of posts complaining about how this recent update is in your words a downgrade and have not offered up any of your problems or asked for help in the proper forums
you have not contributed any or offered up your DXDIAG, your problems have not been posted in any support forum...you have not posted in the following forums dating back since may or before:
Technical Support Forum
AH Bug Report Forum
Aces High II 2.14 Beta Forum
you made no attempt to check and see if the new update , when it was opened for public testing for over a whole month to the community, nor made any post in that beta forum saying you are having problems...
yet you continually flame HTC and this new update........ and you are showing just how pathetic your postings really are.....
the majority of your post to these forums involve hordewars in the Main Arenas where a squad or squads on one country work together to play "win the flag"
quit your beoching until you offer up your system specs, your DXDIAG, and your problems you are having and post these in the Tech Support forum and or the Bug Forum........ asking for help to find a resolution or a way to help you enjoy the game more......if you are to lazy to do this then you do not really need to flame HTC and their product, now do you?

The fact that I can actually get 20+ FPS without really sacraficing anything but the terrain really. (was expecting to be flying in a green square shooting at red squares)
I personally think HTC has done an amazing job with this update, especially the time they took to make sure it was plenty playable for people with lower end computers.

No, as far as I know, but the arena should be unlocked by now.

For those without uber machines, the game seriously looks
like a nintendo arcade game. To the casual new subscriber
this game will disappoint and not serve lower-end gamers
looking for an online flight sim.
-
Uber machines, lol. This game is still not really all that resource intensive, the only new feature that is is smooth self shadow. As long as you've got a half-decent video card you can run it at pretty high settings, save for the stutters that are still randomly plaguing some people systems.
-
So, you started this thread to slap down those who respected you enough to take it as a serious question? Shame on you Delta.
-
Delta,
Just out of curiosity, what would you like done to improve AH2 for the lower-end gamers?
-
The more I mess around with drivers and video setting, the more I'm coming to hate it. It shouldn't be this much work to get a game to run right. The ground looks nothing close to real for me. My screen shots and HTCs are 2 different games.
-
Sure I like my frame rate going from the 80s in the last version to the 20s in this one. The land scape looks like waters colors did by a 6 year old and only by turning off all I can and going to the bottom of the graphics can I even play so whats not to like??
-
I like the water. It makes people auger.
-
I like having separate tile sets for PTO terrains. I love the Pacific-themed terrains to actually LOOK like it, rather than the Euro-centric build we'd had the rest of the time.

only thing I don't like is shadows in cockpit it makes me drink more beer :).
Game is 200% improved and if you don't like I am having a bottle of 8% real ale to drown your sorrow's.
I wonder what AH will be like in 10 years time.
Hurrah and tally!

I like any fights that occur over water. Even watching other peoples' fights from a perch looks so much better. Also, I like how the ack doesn't fire like a fire house any more.
I'm under the impression that this update included some core changes that can now be used to make core differences in the coming months/years. It might seem like a downgrade to some right now, but I bet it won't in 6-12 months.
-
The thing I like most are the new thatched beach huts for the island natives.
The thing I like the least is that there are no native girls in grass skirts to populate them. :(

OMFG!!! Someone gets it!!!! :aok
And you know that these things were lost permanently instead of being removed to eliminate variables in troubleshooting?
Holy cow! 2 people get it... waaaaait a minute. You're staff! You don't count. ;) :lol
Honestly, don't get me wrong, I truly do feel bad for the people who can't play this game the way they are used to. ESPECIALLY those with "ok" machines who are having problems (keep in mind an "ok" machine these days is a core2duo 2.4GHz chip with an 8600 or faster video card and 1-2Gb of ram... that is NOT high end specs anymore). However, the HTC crew has had a history of fixing and updating things quickly once they implement a major change. They also have shown a history of not making "knee jerk" decisions based upon the noises of a few, since most of their large decisions are concentrated on trying to improve for the many. This update isn't just about "this week", but about the future, and a lot of your concerns may be addressed in the future. A period of time after a major patch in where things are in an "in progress" state is common for MMOs, but none that I've ever been involved in has the actual core STAFF of the MMO answering questions and trying to help.
:salute to the HTC staff for trying, and keeping trying.

Delta,
Just out of curiosity, what would you like done to improve AH2 for the lower-end gamers?
That's a fair question.
First we need to understand what it means to improve the game.
To do that we need to define some terminology: game
and environment. They are not the same thing.
The game consists of planes, vehicles and the dynamics
of gameplay like strategy, coordinated gameplay, flight
model and other aspects of actual operations. Even the base
layout, number of barracks, fuel, etc. are part of the game
as they affect actual gameplay.
The environment graphics, by contrast, are the virtual world
that the game takes place in. They are 'not' the game.
My whole point here is that the visuals used to create
the environment shouldn't cause actual gameplay to suffer.
My related concern (other than not being able to enjoy
all these visuals) is that the "game" has suffered because
of the focus on environment and not on gameplay.
While I appreciate the work that was done on the game's
mechanics (flight models, bug fixes, etc.) I wish more
attention has been given to adding planes and maps
that would not have posed a serious technical hurdle to the
existing player base.
Easyscor, you above all people should understand
the opportunity cost that this new version required, seeing
that you are involved in events and all. What would have
made for better scenarios, shiny water or new planes like
the Ju-52, Betty bomber, Japanese Raiden, PBY, or even
the oft-reviled B-29, etc.?
How about additional vehicles like the M-10, M-24,
Japanese tank, etc. These would have been invaluable
for scenarios and FSO events. Gratefully, we got the 2
new planes but my argument is that we could have had much
more and with no technical headaches.
Imagine the player response if the last update had
presented us with 4 new maps, 8 new planes and a couple
of more vehicles. It would have been universally enthusiastic
but more than that, none of the current subscribers would
have been tossed to the curb because their systems
couldn't handle the new release.
From my reading of the forums the chief desires of the
community for a long time has been for new planes and maps.
We got 2 new planes, no new maps and a host of technical
issues related to the newest release.
Moreover, improvements to the film viewer and mission editor
are long overdue but again, the time that could have been spent
on these issues was instead used for shiny water and
photorealistic terrain (sans topographic features).
Please understand, I didn't post this to slap anyone down
but to highlight my contention that in actual fact nothing
significant about the 'game' has improved. The only game
benefits that this version presented us with were two new planes.
Sure, the virtual world that this game takes place in is
nicer to look at (if your machine is able) but that very
eye candy has actually caused gameplay (the 'game) to suffer.
Let me conclude with these thoughts. First, I applaud
HiTech and crew for the quick introduction of patches
to fix some of the issues that have been caused by the
new version. My 'game' play has improved somewhat because
of these efforts and I hope they will continue but in the
future I hope they will concentrate on improving the
'game' and not the environment.
My hope for myself is that the 'game' will once again be
playable for me and that I will continue to enjoy this pasttime
that I have become addicted to over the past 7 years.
-
What do I like best about the new version?
Hmmmmm....
That would be the whine. :D
-
And you know that these things were lost permanently instead of being removed to eliminate variables in troubleshooting?
I can only look at the past to determine that Waffle.
IIRC, the last terrain change featured all of these elements
at its introduction. Why would I expect otherwise
this time around?
Furthermore, since everyone has access to these forums,
would it be be beyond the pale to declarative state what
you have just implied rather than suggest it as a possibility?
Surely, some dialogue on these matters from you would
go a long way towards calming players who feel that they
are being shut out of the game they love.
So, is that the plan? Will all of these things be added back in?
-
That's a fair question.
First we need to understand what it means to improve the game.
To do that we need to define some terminology: game
and environment. They are not the same thing.
I actually put to you that both ARE the same thing, or at least, very tightly related.
Improved graphics do improve the game. Case in point... the complaints in this thread about "zelda" like graphics. If graphics weren't part of the game, why are people complaining about the zelda like graphics on lower end settings?
The game consists of planes, vehicles and the dynamics
of gameplay like strategy, coordinated gameplay, flight
model and other aspects of actual operations. Even the base
layout, number of barracks, fuel, etc. are part of the game
as they affect actual gameplay.
The environment graphics, by contrast, are the virtual world
that the game takes place in. They are 'not' the game.
However, a couple of the earlier complaints you made were the lack of anti-vehicle objects on beaches and lack of hills. Wouldn't those both be environmental objects that affect gameplay?
My whole point here is that the visuals used to create
the environment shouldn't cause actual gameplay to suffer.
A statement I agree with, but I feel we'd disagree with what makes "actual gameplay to suffer"
But at the same time, to improve gameplay for the future, some of these significant hurdles would need to take place. It's like climbing a hill/mountain/rock-face. Sometimes, you look ahead of you and you see that your chosen path is not the safest path you could have taken. You have to climb back down a few paces to shift where you are, to get a better grasp and angle to climb back up.
How about additional vehicles like the M-10, M-24,

but more than that, none of the current subscribers would
have been tossed to the curb because their systems
couldn't handle the new release.
There's absolutely no garantee we would have received any of those items. Yes, new planes and vehicles would always be nice, but there may reasons for this terrain and lighting upgrade that, while looking like nothing more than a graphics update to the end users (us), might be a change to give HTC options that were not available for them before to improve the game in ways that just weren't possible with the old system.
From my reading of the forums the chief desires of the
community for a long time has been for new planes and maps.
We got 2 new planes, no new maps and a host of technical
issues related to the newest release.
host of technical issues for SOME, but not ALL people. In fact, I'd be willing to put money on it that >50% of the paying player base have NOT had significant technical issues. Why? Because HTC knows that putting out an update that would cause >50% of his clientele to no longer be able to use his services is financial suicide.
If the only change with the new version was graphics, and you stated above that graphics do not equal gameplay, how did your gameplay suffer?
Let me conclude with these thoughts. First, I applaud
HiTech and crew for the quick introduction of patches
to fix some of the issues that have been caused by the
new version. My 'game' play has improved somewhat because
of these efforts and I hope they will continue but in the

:salute Delta. Please do not misunderstand my response, as I am not trying to make fun of you or belittle you in the least. I'm just trying to point out that there IS another point of view of this situation and through your frustration, you might not be seeing the forest through the trees, so to speak. While the problems right now may seem insurmountable, I have faith that HTC is doing this for the betterment of their company, the game, and their players.
Can always do what I do when frustrated by an object (such as a game). Drink a beer. :aok

Excluding the introduction of 2 new planes as

So, aside from the planes, what do you like
about the new upgrade?
I just would like to know why you don't use
the full text box when you type out your para-
graphs. I find it rather compressed and hard-
er to read.
-
Thanks for the response Knite.
Well-reasoned posts, even those that disagree with me,
are always welcome. :salute
-
And my answer to your question: I like that they took a few steps forward in making the game look more modernized all the while STILL giving us two new planes to play with (great planes) and a brand new Tiffie model. I know of a few skinners that were very happy for that last one. :)
-
Just making my case guys.
Feel free to disagree.
I am very used to being in the minority view.
-
Delta, I like that you still fly the P-40, and completely own in it.
-
Delta, I like that you still fly the P-40, and completely own in it.
I do much better when you are my wingman Enkre! :salute
-
*snip*
You have to upgrade the core game. Period. What we have is better than Aces High I with 250 vehicles/planes.
You bring up FSO/Scenarios. Part of that experience is feeling like you're 'there'. Good graphics improve this 100000x. I can't wait to fly FSO this month. This will improve the experience for most players, especially going from the freaking patchwork quilt terrain we had before.
On the subject of maps, those are player made, always have been. We have like 3 maps that were made by HTC. The new TE isn't out yet; it may make things much easier... meaning new maps.
There's a lot more to this update than you seem to think...
-
players who feel that they
are being shut out of the game they love.
Add me to the statement above.
I cant afford a new machine to run the uber graphics 'The Few' bloke has. I have the 'muppet' blokes' rubbish-blurry-pants view of things. :cry
Also it would be uneconomical to purchase any new PC at this time, with Windows 7 over that October hill. I'm not gonna be a n00b and get a vista machine. :devil
-
I like the way the new terrain blends together. The old version had a patchwork quilt type of look, lots of light green with dark green squares dotted about. It was easy to see the mechanics of how the terrain was built and that ruined my suspension of disbelief. The new terrain looks more varied too. Rock tiles look rocky now, not grass with a few rocks dotted about.
I also have high hopes for the new terrain editor when it comes out. I doubt HTC will have gone to all this trouble just for what we've seen so far. I suspect this new terrain is to allow other stuff (rivers etc.) to be added in future.
I also like that the two new planes introduced were early war turnfighters and not late war hit and run monsters.
-
I like the new Ack effect...sounds wicked and looks sweet with random puffs instead of the old all at once boom
-
Terrain. Shadows. Water. And the nonstop whine from people that just feel they need to be heard. Patience kids, time to get a grip.
-
Can't really say where it was a major improvement. Don't really see much change to it all except water and 2 new planes.
Game playability for me is about the same. FR is the same, things really dont look all that much different to me and I have everything turned on.
No complaints, everythings fine on my end. Not really sure what all the hoopla is about (shrugs)

Blends as in water colors to me.

Um well if they indeed worked on the ho better, then I like it. I BARELY missed a plane a couple times tonight and didn't get the dreaded ' you collided' while scissoring.

Everything, I'm not running the High res version either. If you can't run the version now, you probably will be able to in a few years, because you'll have to get a new computer anyways. The new update is great. I love HTC :D

I agree with you Lusche, it does look really funky where the sea meets the beach. I even reported that in a thread, in the beta forum a while back.
Below is Port Douglas Beach in Australia, a good example of what it should look like.

I still think it's better than our old blocky shorelines, tho. And the way the beaches were done in the last terrain version was extremely repetetive.

Anyone who thinks the terrain up date sucks needs to go to 30,000 and look down.
No repetition to speak of....its there but you have to look hard. No more forest blocks or straight treelines hardly.....

First day: Hated it. Shut down computer very frustrated.
Day Two: Read the forums saw the dissatisfaction of many and the pomposity of the elite.
Day Three: Back to the forums, not attempting game play yet. Find some helpful info from a few.
Day Four: Followed the helpful advice, Cleaned up PC, downloaded updated drivers, Shut down unessesary apps. Logged on, got a few kills. Still some lag issues, occaisional warping opponents.
Day Five: Getting a feel for it, The feel of the new version takes getting used to. Still some issues with blocky self shadow, turned off. Star on the wing of the F4u blocky. Realize I may have to upgrade computer with new Video Card and Memory. I LIKE NEW AND SHINY THINGS AND WILL NOT GO BACKWARDS AT ANY COST. I have to be frugal and will squeeze all the performance as possible from my 5 yr old machine with maybe $120.00 in upgrades.

Slate tell me what you want to get with that $120 I might be able to find you more bang for your bucks.

Looking for a good Video Card (I like Nvidia Geforce) and some added memory for my Dell XPS dual core.

Throw me the Model number and I will see what I can run down for you as far as Memory and Video Cards. BTW do you have built in sound or a sound card? An upgrade in this area can also increase your game experience and your computers ability to play AH2 with this new patch. As it offloads CPU calculations of sound from the main CPU and if you get a sound card with memory on board then you allow for an additional source of information flow the computer to use. Basically your just adding another worker to help in doing the same job that you had less workers doing before. Everyone can work faster and not as hard. And making a 4 lane highway into a 6 lane with additional memory on your sound card.

The core of the game has to be upgraded from time to time. That's the nature of the industry.
Here are a couple of shots from the Coral Sea 2009 scenario as running on my ($400) system.

I don't know if anyone has noticed but judging the space between planes is easier. It's also easier to see what direction a plane is headed from far off. Now only if i did auger every 3 flight i might be ok.
-
I honestly can't see any difference at all in apparent size or visibility of other planes.
