Title: Installing new operating system...Question
Post by: Dace on August 02, 2009, 02:54:41 PM
I'm am not very tech savvy and was wondering if someone could help me out. I want to wipe my HD clean of windows XP Home 32-bit (without spending money) and replace it with Vista Home 64-bit. How do I go about wiping out my HD and getting it ready for the new OS?

When you install the new system it should ask you if you "want to reformat the drive". Click yes, it will ask "are you sure?" click yes again and it will wipe your drive clean THEN install the new OS

Given all the problems people are having with Vista I'm surprised you want to switch to it. I only mention this since you say you aren't tech savvy. You might want to research this a little more before you wipe your drive.

I agree with FLS on this one, unless you have so much ram you aren't using it OS wise. Otherwise, I'd reinstall XP and wait for Windows7 to be released.

I'd also recommend staying with Windows XP for now.  When you buy a new computer, if it comes with Windows Vista (or if it's a little while from now, it would be Windows 7, I guess), then I'd switch, but I wouldn't switch now just to switch.
