Title: Astrophotography / Photography riddle
Post by: moot on August 04, 2009, 08:14:36 AM
Someone in Poland reports seeing and photographing a triple sunrise, and insists that it was visible by eyesight; that it wasn't a lens artifact.  Anyone have suggestions as to what it could be?

The picture. (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap090804.html)

The answer is quite simple. It wasnt taken on Earth. It was taken on Tattoine. Oh ya..Tattoine is a desert world..hmm..got me..reflections off the water and clouds?

Speaking of lens artifacts, when I watch lightning videos, I often see the strike and also little flashes near the camera. People are always saying those are step leaders, but I thought it was a reflection off the lens. Ideas?

I would say that one sunrise is "real", while the 2 others are reflects, just a guess..

That's what I'm thinking. An optical illusion from the water.

atmospheric refraction.
That would sound more likely as it bends the light thus damping it.

Reflection off of moisture layers maybe...

My guess, Air density and reflection

I agree with the group that thinks it's a reflection caused by the picture being taken through a double pane glass window at a 45 degree angle.  I would love to be proven wrong but there is too much evidence to support the window theory.

Very cool picture though.

all three suns have a  reflection off the bottom of each sun.... there not very high up off the horizon so you can barley see...

So  I see six suns not three

Not worth speculating on if she was looking thro glass.......

Can rain act like a mirror and reflect light like that?

yes more than likely as if you look to the left of the sun/s and about 3/4 way up to the edge of the frame there is a speck.....dirty window my guess..... or  UFO......forget about the suns look a ufo   brrr  brrmm

if you look closely in the picture there are actually 4 shown... the brightest one which is completely out of the water... one connected and below it just starting to come out of the water (notice the reflection just below this one) then one slightly dimmer to the left.... and another very faint one to the left of that
