Any help would be great so I can get some traing done and join you guys/gals in the air.

Did you make sure that you hit "OK" and not "back?"

Were you trying to say hermia?
Anyways, you could try making sure it's plugged in, DOH
Check if windows recognizes it.
Check to make sure the wires are completing a circuit.
I have the exact same stick, I'll see if there's anything else,.

Alright, this might work, go to start>control panel> printers and other hardware>Game controllers> Advanced> choose your CURRENT joystick, if you switched joysticks your computer may not recognize the new controller as the one you want to use. also try calibrating your joystick. The problem is that there are quite a few things that could be the culprit.

Eagleclaw, that was the first thing I checked, no luck there.
I am not giving up yet, just want this to work. Tired of AA and want to try something new.

A DXDiag may be needed.
An outdated driver may also be the culprit
if all else fails just email Skuzzy

Can you see the stick in the windows setup? Can you calibrate it there?
If yes, move onto the game systems, if no your stick isn't working, bad plug, bad stick.
In the game, go to controllers, and select your from the drop down box. Click on one of the axiss in the list, and click on the "advance" button. Click the calibrate button and follow directions. Watch the blue boxes to the left and see if the line is moving up and down through it. Do each of the axiss this way. If this works move on to the programing of buttons.
I would click the "ok" button after every few changes, then reopen the controllers section to see if it stayed. If it doesn't, then your file may be marked as "read only" in which case it won't "write" the new setting to the file.

Also, when you go to map controller - ensure its picked up the correct stick there - having moved from a Saitek stick to CH, this almost caught me out when setting up doh.

Make sure none of the files are write-protected.
