Post by: Plawranc on August 08, 2009, 08:16:02 AM
I think we desperately need a long range German heavy bomber and only one type of such entered service, the HE 177

First the He-111.

Then the Do-217 and Ju-188.

Then, after HTC has gotten around to many other aircraft, then maybe the He-177.

Except it wasn't truly effective operationally.  Planes like this make the P-108 appear to have been covered in martial glory by comparison.  The one time they tried to raid Britain with them, several started on fire on the runway or shortly after take off, most of the rest turned back in flight with problems, like 2 or 3 did a dive bombing raid on some cows as best I recall.

The Germans were pragmatic and used some other bombers in a wide array of roles, adding hardpoints for external bomb load, making them night fighters, torpedo bombers, etc.

The widely used, extremely fine, D0-217 (which also served in the Regia Aeronautica) comes to mind as the better plane to model.  Far, far better.  The He-111 is also a better plane to model.  With those two additions Germany would have an excellent planeset capable of getting by for some time without major tweaking (variants would be considered minor tweaking).  The Bigger Junkers (288 and 388) are also superior aircraft.

Cheers,

Sakai
