Title: Bug or Feature?
Post by: bustr on August 12, 2009, 03:49:20 PM
I was sitting on the runway offline in an La7 just now firing the guns. One of the prop was covering the muzzle of my right side gun. The gun fired through the body of the prop. In the scheme of things this probably dosen't matter. My reporting it at least is less costic than some of the A-noidal realism officiandose who help HTC keep this SIMM so very realistic.

Prop position is random, and guns already take into account rate-of-fire reduction for being synchronized.

So basically the prop blades are eye candy, and gun firing rate already takes the prop into account, so it's just 2 systems bumping heads, but the end result is still about right.

Shucks, I wanted to saw my prop off. I killed the engine on purpose to get the prop sitting static in front of that gun. Can you see all of those players who accidentaly touch their trigger on the runway before doing anything else chewing up their prop and the shrapnel busting a jug on the engine. Or better yet a ricchocet pilot wound. Could you see the ch200 whines on weekends with everyone drinking. HiTech could put a new counter in our stats for death by oops.   :)

That would be impossible, the gun wouldn't be able to fire if the prop were in front of it in real life. The guns are synchronized to the propeller.
The RoF loss caused by synchronization is modeled, rounds just can't collide with your own propeller.

I'm going to assume since you cannot kill yourself while sitting on the runway in a fighter by dropping a bomb. That this is a programers decision to not have you shoot your own prop off by accident while your engine is not turned on. I just tested all fighters with hood mounted guns. None will damage the stationairy prop stopped in front of the mussle. I tested dropping a bomb from those that can carry one while testing the gun and prop artifice. Couldn't get a peep from a single bomb.

So this is another kindness from HiTech to protect us from our own fat fingers........... :)

I still say it would make for an interesting ch200 on weekends as the beer flows for HiTech to allow the guns to damage the stationairy prop on the runway.

incase you did not see it the 1st time......... ;)

Airplane sitting still on runway.

Have not hit E.

Hit E to turn prop then hit E to kill.

Prop stops blocking the gun mussel.

Engine is now dead. <--- no motion, dead propeller, no synchronization.

Prop sits still blocking gun.

Turn on zoom to full.

Pull trigger.

Rounds and tracer lines and gun flash passes through non-moving, non-synchronized propeller blade. No disruptor gear toggling an off switch or cam operated rod disallowing that gun to fire while the mussel is blocked.

You can only have synchronization with a moving prop, unless, games cartoon prop does not matter, just eyecandy, and gun firing rate is HTC's best formula at timing the disruptor gear for its use in the games modeling for a hood mounted gun, ballistics, and how many rounds down stream will actually hit something during a given fraction of time.  Because when the prop is at rest, the bullets pass through it. Try it yourself offline. I assume the programer decided to allow that artifice rather than let us tower ourselves by accident.

Have any of you gone offline and tried this?

The guns on the in game plane are not actually synchronized with the prop, they only have their RoF cut down to simulate synchronization. If they were actually synchronized with the propeller the gun would not fire when the prop was in front of it, it doesn't matter that the engine is off.
The prop is just 'eye candy' as you say.

As for bombs, they don't arm until they've traveled 1000 feet or something like that.
