The Widowmakers decided to take up a bunch of TBMs to hit a carrier, no one caring if we lived or died. I think we ran three strikes out to the enemy carrier and dropped untold tons of torpedoes. Flying an old, slow, and cumbersome beast like the TBM into a carrier task group was probably the most fun I've had in the game. <S> to the carrier guys (no longer remember who they were or what country).

sounds like you had alot of fun...... wtg
btw did you know everytime you upped a new sortie your previously dropped torpedo was disappearing?
-
That would have been a perfect opportunity to fly B5N's for historical accuracy.

How far out do you think they dropped the torpedoes??
You have to get pretty close to have any chance of hitting something.

So there weren't any meatball carriers? Flying TBM's against a carrier group wouldn't be historically accurate?
Now I have to burn my history books.

TBD/ TBMs flew against Japanese carrier groups starting with the first six Avengers to go into combat at Midway. They were all slaughtered ( except for Bert Earnest who manged to return back to Midway with dead crew members and an Avenger shot to hell) . There is a great book detailling VT 8s actions in the Pacific I'm reading now called "A Dawn Like Thunder", if you want some good reading about Avengers and Pacific naval warfare I highly suggest it.
sounds like you had alot of fun...couldn't imagine pulling that shi@ off in real life
big :salute to the men who actually did it

I wasn't saying that TBM's didn't work against Japanese task groups.
We have Essex class CV's, Baltimore class CA's and Fletcher class DE's in the game so flying Japanse torpedo bombers against these would indeed have been more historically accurate.
I don't recall the Japanese using American built ships in their task groups but if your history books say that the IJN had task groups comprised entirely of American built ships then I would in fact burn them.

BE your right.....maybe we need some IJN ships. Mix it up a bit? Wishlist....? :D

They look generic from 10k up...even on the decks they look generic...could be Vietnam era for all I know.

That would be cool. Who would be the Japanese? The rooks, bishops or knights?

How about 300 vehicle points to command your own ship Cruiser, Destroyer. :rock
And possibly having a choice of a WW2 historical ship.

When I played I would up a B5n and have one of my squad members be my gunner. It was alot of fun. I loved when ppl thought they could pick me and all I had to do was turn and they miss lol. I remember a few times I would find a friend who flew bish and get him to up a D3A. I would then meet him somewheres and we would have a D3a fight. I found I had more fun when I just flew for the fight instead of flying to win the war.

Some squads I've been on before have done this. We wiped a whole fleet once. It is good fun. What country are you? Give a shout if you are Rooks I will show you a thing or two about the TBM.

I don't believe that torpedos disappear when the vehicle that dropped them dies.
Last night or the night before I took off from a CV to find a PT boat about 2k out in front of the cv group. I immediately killed it. The guy driving it was Lynx. A short time later (less than a minute) the cruiser died. Then the CV died. The guy had unloaded his torpedos, and because of my ground detail settings I hadn't seen any wakes, so hadn't turned the CV group. His torpedos had clearly survived his PT boat's death.
I've had torpedos kill ships after my TBM died many times in the past, but this thing with Lynx was since the latest update, so it's still that way.

It came with one of the newer patchs, I don't remember how it was worded exactly but it's something alone these lines.
Anything considered ordnance will disappear if the person who dropped said ordnance begins a new sortie.
In other words if you were to drop torps. bail, and re-up before the torp. has time to collide with the ship or something it would just automatically disappear.

It doesn't disappear if you die. It does dissapear if you start a new sortie.

Lynx made sure to ask his squadies in the area if the torps had hit or were past the CV prior to re upping. Torps stay active until you re up , they dont disappear when you die

Some of the 80th met up with another squad off the MA map and had a nice B26 dogfight. Was really hard flying and laughing so hard. I ended up as the only one left standing. some of the other folks that went down actually upped fighters to come escort me all the way back to base.
