I have an old AGP machine. I havent played since the new version came out. Not because of my machine but because ive been busy. Last thursday i was checking the forum and read post about the patch last week and how it helped older machines. I patched and was able to play with FR's in the 50's without an problem. Now today(sunday) i put the new patch on and now when i get into a fight or over enemy ack my fr's crash and i get studders. Any suggestions? I changed res to 1280x1024. I put the hi Res pack on but then the game crashed so I uninstalled it.
-
With the latest patch, I now get a white screen of death. Windows notifies me that AH had an issue.
It happened to me twice tonight.
-
Need to see DXDIAG outputs.

Need to see DXDIAG outputs.
Here you go. I had no white screen crashes until the last patch.

Video and sound drivers are out of date for sure...big paging file too.

I just want to be clear. Patch 6 is when you started having problems?
Yep, you have something eating a lot of RAM up and you definately need to update the video and sound card drivers.
-
hmmm. Uh i feel like the retarded school kid. You know the on that ate the crayons and the paste. I have know idea how to get that info to putin here. I also get the white screen and AH problem message. Also the default graphics when i logged in were 16somethingxsomething else. I changed them to 1280x1024 and it seems to have helped with the white screen, but game play still isnt as good as last weeks patch. Also i talked to a computer network guy who said that my antivirus could be some of the problem. I use webroot and he said it makes to many registry entries.

Start->run in the box type dxdiag then hit <enter>...a gray box will appear on your screen with several tabs...look at the bottom right corner and click on "save information"...another screen will pop up telling you where it will save that file...on the left side choose "desktop"...then click "ok"...when that screen disappears...exit the dxdiag applet...open the dxdiag text file you just saved to your desktop...then highlight the sections for "system information", "display devices" and "sound devices"...use the right mouse button and click anywhere in that file...then left click "copy"...then paste that information into a post here in the forums.
And yes, if you're not disabling your anti-virus as well as other "non critical" processes when trying to play AH (unless you have a major uber computer)...it will cause isues...try downloading an installing IOBIT Gamebooster...works for me.
-
Thanks for the info I will do that when my shift ends. As far as my AV, I always disable it before I play.

Yes, patch 6 brought this on. Today I did 3 to 4 hours off-line with no issue. If it should happen again, I shall look at the details of the error (Microsoft gives one that opportunity prior to sending the report to them) and attempt to capture it.
I know the drivers are old. If it ain't broke, don't "fix it." As I recall, in the past, it was recommended not to update them because there were known issues with the newer drivers. Can't win for loosing.
I was, and still maybe, satisfied with the current video and sound performance. The WSOD has never happened before patch 6. I understand others are getting WSOD.
In the past I have been able to keep ZoneAlarm and Symantic AV going with no issue. I truly dislike leaving my system open to invasion.
-
Webroot (spysweeper with Antivirus) is a good low overhead AV program. It is one of the best ones out there for gaming machines. I have tested alot of AV programs and I like that one the best. Now I do turn mine off before I go into the game but what is nice about that program, it just 1 click. :aok 2nd they also have a gaming mode which I have used to and works just as good.

Having 2 AV programs can cause conflict between the two. I would only use 1 of them. I know the older norton AV's were resource hogs. Not sure of there latest version yet.

Some of the newest ATI drivers have been reported to cause a few issues but there are newer versions than what you have that are working well...the sound card driver absolutely outdated...and believe it or not, sound driver conflicts can cause program crashes.
The chances of your system being hacked is slim...aside from that neither ZoneAlarm (I'm assuming personal edition?) or Symantec AV are going to stop a hacker that really wants to get into your system...now if getting hacked is a major concern for you, unplug your cable/dsl modem and stay off the internet, and don't let anyone get near your computer.
I have 4 running systems in my house on a router connected 24/7...not a single hacker yet...guess I'm not important enough.

I am using Symantec Corporate AV. Give me some credit here, I am not running the AV feature of ZoneAlarm Pro.
I allow it to dload updated definitions, but it is not running. I agree, the Norton flavor of AV is a pig and designed to be fool proof, therefore one can do very little to adjust it correctly.

My video card is for AGP bus. According to ATI, I have the latest and last driver update. Sound card is AC 97, integrated on the MB. According to Emachines I have the latest and last driver update. Realtek confirms this as well.
ZoneAlarm Pro is what I am using. I also have a hardware router/firewall. Getting hacked is a concern. I feel an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Defense in depth is a good concept. So far my 5 workstations and 3 laptops have not had an issue. Unfortunately, none of these systems can filter a poor attitude.
In all of my years with Aces High, I have never had it crash. Until the last patch, number 6. I will investigate my current processes and such matters. However, prepatch = good. Perhaps it was just a fluke that it crashed.
-
Ok cool...at least you're not using the "freebie" or "home user" versions of stuff...as for the firewall thing, there have been repeated posts recommending the firewall be disabled to "avoid problems" with AH...I hope you're using a Linksys router with the Linux based firmware on it...everything else is...
If I lived closer to you I could show you some things about your defenses but if it helps you sleep at night...stick with it...at least you're trying...which more than most people even have a concept of trying.
Your recent crash could be a fluke...anything is possible...I've had it happen 3 times with no rhyme or reason on my "good system" the old one has been trouble free...strangely enough.
I just found a much newer driver for that realtek audio card...version A.4.06 dated 10/01/2008...Emachines may have stopped supporting it but Realtek didn't.
This "legacy" driver for your video card should get you up to date on that:
ATI Catalyst™ Display Driver (http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Legacy/Pages/radeonaiw_xp.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.2&lang=English&rev=9.3.1&ostype=Windows XP - Professional/Home)
But then, you never know.
And last but not least...did you try uninstalling your old install of AH from C:\Program Files to and doing a fresh install of the latest version at C:\HiTech Creations\Aces High??
-
Yes, i uninstalled and reinstalled, but didnt play much after that to put it through the ringers. As far as crash, my computer crashes alot. Most of the time either while the AV is running a scan or after I start up and the AV is loading. I am looking into diffrent AV programs, but not sure. PC Associates has been recommended as being good for gamers

Gary, if your system is crashing while your AV is running a scan or loading...uninstall it...stay away from PC Cillin, McAffee, Symantec...try Avast or Avira for low system overhead and protection that is better than the 3 big corporate programs...
You might want to do some further diagnostics as well on your system...with frequent crashes it's not unusual for the file system to get corrupted which will mean a complete system reload if it happens to the wrong part of your operating system.
Since you're not a tech geek...I don't recommend doing this stuff without someone who at least understands the lingo assisting you in person.

I saw the driver for the Realtek. I also saw the warning from them that there may be issues when used with MB onboard chipsets.
I also saw the "legacy" drivers but they are not for an ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro AGP.
I did do a fresh AH install from the start.
Way back when highspeed cable first became available to me all I had was the "modem" and my system. Thus I went with ZoneAlarm. I have always used a retail version of it.
Linksys(Cisco) is the only way to go IMHO. I started with a single port firewall and I am now using a 5 port router firewall.
I have seen the items regarding firewall interference with AH. It has never been an issue for me.
I am sure you could show me some things that would have me shutting down my systems when the are not in active use. I know it is out there. Whether one is involved with physical or electronic security, it can always be overcome. I have just taken the precautions to prevent one from "sneaking in or out." Log reviews and other measures are a good practice.
I have 15 years of professional experience as a Systems/Network Engineer/Administrator.
-
Well 2slow, don't know what to tell you...I happen to have that Realtek audio driver running on my old HP system with WinXP SP3 (AC97 audio chip) and it's working fine regardless of the warnings (couldn't recommend it without trying it)...as for the video card driver I used the interactive support search function on AMD's website and after specifying that exact video card...there are 2 updated legacy driver packages available...9.3.1 from 7/5/2009 and 9.8 from 8/16/2009...the list of video cards that show up under those drivers are the latest card series to be "added" to the legacy driver list supported by those drivers.
One of the most valuable things I've learned over the past 18 years in various I.T. roles...just when you think you know what you're doing, you don't.
Good luck.
-
Ok lets try this.

Good luck.
I now have over 9 hours of use, off-line (working on my town carpet bombing method), with no issues. I shall get in some Titanic time tonight and see how things go.
Thanks for the info on Realtek. If I have issues again, I shall give the drivers a try.
-
Spent some time in Titanic Tuesday. No issues. Perhaps my previous two crashes on-line were a fluke.
Fingers crossed,

I see what you are saying (in the bold). I will give them a try soon. Heck, one can always revert back on the driver. Did I say always? Perhaps I meant one should be able to revert back.
Thank you for your help in this matter.

I tried the ATI 9.8 driver install package. It does not find a driver for my current setup. 9.3 package gives me what I already have. So I do have the "latest" driver for the display.
So far I have not had any further issues with an AH crash.

Ok cool Slow...if you're not crashing now, I wouldn't sweat it. It's really too bad AMD had to acquire ATI.
Is is possible that some of the crashes we experience come from server side? I mean consider a slight bug on the server, if the client can't translate it properly, the client continues to try until it gives up or crashes. Just a thought.
-
Ok lets try this.
Gary, what's the status on your issues now? Did you remove your anti-virus and run some other diagnostics?
Your paging file usage is still pretty high...have you run any anti-spyware/malware programs on your system besides the anti-virus program that crashes your system?
-
I am having the same problem.
Have set all 3 video setting the same. Have no other apps or antivirus running while playing.

You're running Windows XP 64 bit...and your drivers look ok. Like Gary your paging file usage is high...any idea what you have running in the background? Like iTunes, Googledesktop...anything like that?
What texture size are you running? What have you tried?
-
Also fair to note the 9400GT is a pretty low end video card. It only makes use of DDR2 RAM. Fill rate is pretty weak, comparatively speaking. Probably should not be running with the "Detailed Terrain" option enabled. I would also reduce the "Maximum Texture Size" to 256.
-
Ok this is with my AV shut down and im running the game booster you spoke of and I had it shut down background stuff. I also updated my graphics driver since the last dxdiag. I took some of waffles tips and stopped auto download of skins and disabeld others skins. Playing the game at 1280x1024 and it seems to be doing ok.

Gary, what's the status on your issues now? Did you remove your anti-virus and run some other diagnostics?
Your paging file usage is still pretty high...have you run any anti-spyware/malware programs on your system besides the anti-virus program that crashes your system?
Spybot is a good free spyware cleaner. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
Ad-Aware is another good free one. http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
I have used, and continue to use, both of them. My practice is to run Spybot and then Ad-Aware.
I also use RegCure to clean and fix my registry. There are several flavors of registry repair products. I would defer to which ever one gyrene81 recommends.
-
Well my webroot has AV and AnitSP. I use ARO to fix registry issues.
-
To be honest with u all, the registry fix it programs are more problems then there worth. They may fix some problems but can and will create others. I have used registry cleaners/fixer's and I have never had good luck with them. They may fix the immediate problem but in time they do more harm then good. They sometimes remove registry items that shouldn't be removed and your system will start to have slow start ups (hangs for extended amount of time before finish loading to desktop), system crashing, lockups, system slowdowns, funny things happening like icons disappearing, etc... I strongly reccommend not using registry cleaners and such.
To explain what a registry is, I refer it to a post office. It has all the address's to files, programs, window configurations and drivers that are installed on your computer. Windows uses this post office to find where that file, program or driver is located. If you delete the address, guess what, windows no longer knows where that file, program or driver is at and hence u start getting errors like BSOD, lockups, program errors, icons disappearing, IE not working properly, etcc.
Believe it or not, Microsoft reccommends you reinstall your computer at least once a year if not every 6 months depending on how much you install and unistall or change hardware, or at least they did during Win98 and WinXP. So far I am finding this to be true as I end up reinstalling my computer because of performance issues or getting errors that I can't seem to correct.
-
Good calls there 2slow...never even considered the registry cleaners...I use a couple of different ones...and I always do everything possible to double check the entries that the programs "recommend fixing"...haven't had a failure since XP Sp1.
Gary, looks like you're in pretty good shape for now.
AKDogg...there have been some registry cleaners/tweakers that caused more issues than they fixed...and yeah, it can be a real nightmare when the wrong keys get tweaked...old programs like Symantec's pc doctor are prime examples of what not to use...research is the best way to avoid things happening. I have been using Wise registry cleaner for fast scans and minor cleaning after I have uninstalled software...then the only entries I let it remove are those associated with the software...RegCure that 2Slow recommends is also a very good tool. Caution is the best policy, if you're not sure about anything to do with the registry...don't mess with it.
I guess I just ignore Microsoft advice...most of the time it's based on usage above the average home user.
-
I switched the texture to 256. Detail on only took 20 meg more memory out of 1 gig available. Running at 86 meg.
I don't have any problems with freezing up etc. Runs good other than the 'white screen of death' .
Thanks for the help, I will see how it goes.
:aok
-
I have NOT had anymore "WSOD's". I suspect the original issue must have been a fluke. Perhaps a subsequent reboot cleared up the issue.
-
Hmmm....any ideas. This is with patch 6. Now a repeating error.

Yeah I had that error last night after trying tweaks to get patch 7 to work on my system...I don't read hex.
-
Ha! Its a memory dump and the hex says (read at the right):
Application Failure aceshigh.exe 0.0.0.0 in unknown 0.0.0.0 at offset 00000000

ROFL...wasn't even paying attention to it. :D :P I need to go put in some sorties...eyeballs are buggin out and brain is disconnecting.

I have resolved the issue I was having. I uninstalled the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro AGP driver and the Catalyst software.
This returned me to the VGA mode. After numerous attempts to get the "latest" driver from ATI installed I realized that with the error "No compatible hardware not found" that I would have to drill down and specify the driver to be installed. One also had to ignore the warning from Windows about the driver not being WHQL.
This restored the desktop graphics to full mode and allowed one to run AH again (patch 6).
More investigation revealed a new installer from ATI that had a hot fix to stop the driver and Catalyst installs from failing. http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/CatalystAGPHotfix.aspx
This brings up a good point to consider for helping others in the future. Just because a driver is "dated" does not mean there is a better one. Nor does it mean that a package named '9.8' has a newer driver in it.
I am fairly certain that the issues I experienced were self inflicted by attempts to tweak things.
Fingers are now crossed. I have dloaded the complete AH install package (patch 8). I will install in tomorrow.
