Title: l'il Reaper, aka new squeeker in town
Post by: Reaper90 on August 20, 2009, 12:09:40 PM
My boy James is 6 years old and is a WWII airplane nut, and loves nothing more than going to airshows, playing with model airplanes, and flying on the computer. Up until last night he had always sat in front of me, and just held on while I flew it. Gradually I let him fire the weapons, and fly a little when there were no cons around. Last night I put him in the offline practice area and let him up a P-38J (his mostest favoritest bird of all!) all by himself, and told him he was going to fly it with no help from me. Well, 10 minutes later he was doing loops, rolls, and had managed to taker her up to over 17K with nary a single crash! He flew that bird forever it seemed, and finally ran it out of fuel. Funny thing is, he brought it down dead-stick and crash laneded it without getting killed! The SAPP guys would be proud, the damage list showed both engines gone, the elevators, rudders, and right wing gone also. But he was alive, and yelling for me because he didn't know how to end sortie and take off again! Heck, I shoulda told him how to put his gear down, but didn't figure he would need it!

I promise I'll keep him in the offline practice til he can actually reach the rudder pedals!

I would say turn him loose in the MA if I wasn't afraid of the questionable actions he might run into. You might try midwar, its not quite as bad most times. You definitely have a future AH2 ace on your hands there.

 :salute

My little guy is almost three and he loves to pull the trigger. First time he put the gun noise and pulling the trigger together he laughed hysterically. Small things bring out the dad in me, we are trying to teach him to fly now.

I'll let him get a few more hours before he gets to shoot at real cons, his gunnery isn't there yet to say the least. I'm not far from getting me a new gaming rig, I figure when I do he'll be able to fly the rig I'm using now and we can up together.

Maybe a year or two and he'll be dangerous, at least to something other than his own plane!

If his landings are any indication is already approaching SAPP material. I don't think it will be that long before he gives his old man a good run.

 :D

I have a few years before I reach that point but I hope to do the same thing with my son.

Reaper,

let him go into the TA,so long as he asks he can shoot at people and if I'm there he's welcome to chase me around and shoot at me.I've done this for several player's young fliers!! So long as he follows the few rules there is,why not let him have some fun shooting at planes that just dont turn left all day. :aok

Reaper.... quite a young man you have there.

If you ever bring him online I'd be glad to go in the TA with him and let him hone his skills shooting me down. Just catch me online.

When Fringe first started doing flight sims he was about that age, granted they don't have the patience to really learn until they reach age 10 or so, but they enjoy it none the less.

Fantastic!

If he ever wants to practice his shooting eye  I'll supply a target ONLY in a Jug in TA.

Mine is 6 months old, can't wait to do the fun stuff with him. He watches all my airplane shows with me and on weekends watches me play AH in between play/bottle/nap times

Thought you guys would appreciate that! He and I just finished a model of a P-38J "Arkansas Traveler" that is gonna hang from his ceiling in his room.... I've got a model kit of a bf-110 that'll be handing right in front of it, about 200 out!

I used to do that as a kid, had planes hanging all over the place.

A cool trick is to stretch out cotton balls and be creative with grey/black spraypaint to simulate smoke.  Can make it look like it's getting shot down. :rock

It's also cool to get rid of old models by smearing modelling glue all over them and jamming a firecraker in the cockpit.  Light on fire in the backyard when mom is gone   :x

Cute kid, Reaper :aok

You should take Morfiend up on his TA offer.  Being a trainer, your kid's eyes and ears will be relatively safe, and again, he'll have something more interesting than a circling drone to shoot at.

I'll do that, tho right now he doesn't seem as interested in shooting at things as he does just flying around doing loops and rolls. He seems to love climbing up high, killing the engines, and gliding down while spialing and looping, then firing it back up and climbing back up. So far he's just more into relaxing flying than killing stuff, but with his penchant for anything destructive (his name around the house is "James the Destroyer") I'm sure a yearning to blow up airplanes is not far off.

lol, you're describing my own room as a child! I had the largest furball imaginable happening right in my bedroom, involving everything from a P-40B right up to an F-15C and a B-1 bomber, all turning and burning! All hung from the ceiling from the thinnest monofilament fighing line I could find so the line would be as invisible as possible. IIRC probably ended up having somewhere in the order of 20+ models hanging from the ceiling of a room that was about 12x14 (as best memory serves).

We've already got all the kits waiting to be built to recreate some great dogfights in his room, problem is I'm so slow building them that it'll likely take a few years to put them all together.

That's exactly the plan, at this point. I'm trying to save my pennies for a new box from Tildeath, and a 28" monitor, and when I get that I'll be buying him some Saitek stuff to go one old 'puter.

Reaper,

As I said anytime you want to let him go online check to see if I'm in the TA,you could check the calander for specific times and I'll gladly play target! If you have concerns a quick PM and I can let ya know if I think it's a good time or not. Unfortunately there are times when players in the TA arent on their best behaviour.

When the time comes, just get intouch with me and I'm sure something can be arranged to make it as pleasent a time as possible.I've done this for several players kids and ussually end up having fun myself.

Don't worry, it took me a year and a half to build my "F"BD Dauntless, and a little over a year to build my F4U-4 with cannons. I still haven't painted them, but I think I might skip that step and go straight to the firecracker pile when the Fourth comes along, as the glue work on the canopies is a little...messy.

First time he put the gun noise and pulling the trigger together he laughed hysterically.

BAHAHAHAHAHA OH GOD!

I remember the first time I fell in love. Playing Aces Over Europe on ye olde 486, and I took the Mossie XIV out for the first time... and fired that 57mm cannon.

Ah. Ha. Hahaha. Bahahahaha. AAAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA  :devil

Man, I remember me in those days. I always used the P-51 because it could kill everything in a hard left-hand turn. All the time. It wasn't until much later I grasped that there was more to air combat then a hard left-hand turn.

Dear God I was a retard.
