What exactly does an i7 system offer that you can't get from a socket 775?
If I go from dual core to quad core but stay at 3.0Ghz and everything else stays the same will AH be faster/slower/same?
A GeForce 295 is (I believe) an SLI card so two of them is Quad SLI right?

#1 Check benchmarks for performance increases on the i7. Depending on what you use your computer for, it could be a considerable game.
#2 AH can only use two cores at once. If the clock speed of the dual core and quad core were the same (and we're not talking different generation of CPU's), performance theoretically should be the same.
#3 I'm not positive. The GTX 295 is basically two cards on one physical card. I don't believe its considered 'SLI' if you only have 1 of these guys.

With just a little digging I decided to go with a single 295 to begin with in an i7 rig and hopefully I can find 4GB DIMMs for the latest eVGA MB so I can get to 24GB.

Chalenge...I was looking on the EVGA site last night for mobos, I don't remember seeing one that will hold 24GB of memory...18 was the highest I saw...what mobo did you find?

Our busiest server only has 8GB of RAM in it and it never sees more than 50% utilization of memory. Then again, none of our servers have a Microsoft OS on them.

Your saying above that your seeking a 4GB stick x 6, but memory should be sold is matched sets at this high end. I looked at my memory vendors list and the largest matched kit is 12GB and only comes in 1333 and 1600MHz. I hope what Skuzzy wrote and this info assists you.

Yes I understand but I have a 64 bit program that will use that much memory if I have it to give. So yes I will be looking for a 24GB kit and I will be thinking about juggling 72GB page files and if its even possible!

Not to be a smartoscar Chalange...I'm trying to think of a single 64 bit Windows application that will take even 12GB of RAM on a desktop computer without being enterprise level.......and nothing comes to mind...I could get 36 massive Peoplesoft processes going with that much memory but then I would also need 8 processor cores to handle all the threads without burning the system up...
SATA drives will be too slow to handle the virtual memory needs...if it's a graphical program no gamer video card is going to handle it...none of the API's will handle it either...
I've rented a 64 client game server with less memory...

Get a server board, Intel has models that support up to 128Gb ram.

HP Z800 workstation supports 192gb memory.

True 64 bit apps can and will use all the memory you can install. Most people never push their memory use above 4GB so its a waste for them.

Those are good workstations! I found RAM up to 8GB/card so Im good thanks!

Most people don't have operating systems that can recognize more than 3GB...LOL!!!
What are you planning on running on that thing anyway? I mean seriously, just from what you've said so far, you might actually need 8 cores just to handle the threads and memory allotments.
