We got into trouble last night when our Ki-61s ran into a bunch of P-38Ls in FSO.  It came to the point where to prevent engaging 3-4 P-38s at once, I dropped real low (fight started at 22k) in hopes of only one or two following.  I got lucky and found just one P-38L intent on chasing me low.  There's a bit of psychology here because what I did to defeat him wouldn't work as well against someone not so overzealous.  In other words, he has the altitude advantage and a superior aircraft, he might be overconfident.  He's going to bore in full throttle and doesn't show any interest in setting up a good shot; he'd rather go for a hard lead turn in hopes of a high deflection front-quarter shot.  The earlier you employ this type of lead turn, the better chance you have of gaining a shot, but there's also a higher risk of screwing up and a skilled attacker blowing you away outright.

Anyway, many of us employ this regularly, and many of us have fallen victim to it (I know I have!).  It's definitely something to learn from.

You do mean the first overshoot?

You do mean the first overshoot?

Good point.  I cut off the rest to make it clear.  The first part is the only thing worth watching, anyway.
