Hello,
On the Aces High website front page every month the "Top Fighter Ranking" is displayed. Has anyone ever won this that was not predominantly in one of these planes: BF-109k4, LA7, Spit16, Tempest, F4U-4 (other perk planes)?
Just wondering if a pilot ever won this great honor using a midwar (BF-109g2 etc.) plane?
Thanks,
Slade

I must admit I laughed at both ends of that question.....
A lot of people dont consider it a great honor due to the increasingly dishonorable methods of achieving it. Truthfully, some of the best pure fighter sticks have never ranked top 50 much less top five. As far as the 109G2, I doubt it but its certainly possible, tho exceedingly unlikely.

Steve did it in the P-51D, and possibly without trying for it. :lol
Anyway, getting a high fighter rank is more about SA and choosing your engagements carefully than flying skill. I've gotten a high fighter rank before (top ten) just to see if I could, but I'm nothing special.

Yes.

Yes.
What was the plane?

I just gave you an example.

Thanks. Is the P-51d a midware plane?
-
All kind of planes. In the last few tours, I remember Spit VIII (thrila), Spit IX (tonyjoey), P-38J (ice)
If you are that interested in that question, you can easily check it out yourself with the "top 50 player" scorepage.
-
Oh, sorry. I just gave the P-51D as an example because it's not one of the planes you mentioned and it's not perked, but it is late war.
-
Mid-war planes that you could get top fighter in might be:
Spit VIII
Spit IX (though more difficult than the VIII because you can hardly disengage from anything)
F4U-1A
P-38J
La-5 (if you're a great shot)
The 109G-2 is competitive in late war, but it doesn't have the firepower or ammunition load to kill quickly enough to give you top fighter rank, unless you're some kind of savant. The 109G-6 is a little better on the firepower side, but then it's more difficult to disengage if you need to.

It would be nice if AH would make some planes "fighter only" and some "Attack only" Get rid of dual roll altogether for scoring purposes! :aok
Now get ready for the cries!!! :rofl :rofl :rofl

That idea has its merits. :aok

By all means, have a ball. :) I just didn't know there was competition for it.

Sometimes I think there definately is. 1 day you're, 1 next you're 2, then 3, then back to 1. It's the back and forth months that are competitions between the top 5 or so, in my mind.

Tony, you are too young to spend 68 hours flying a cartoon Spitfire 9! Get outside! :)
Checked. I flew 24 hours, then I checked Steve and he flew 26 last tour.

:lol Don't worry I'll be playing less now that school's started back up.
PS: Steve, I don't know how to say this but.....somebody might have 'accidentally' dropped something 'bad' in the doggy bowl, so ya might wanna look into getting a new one. :noid
PPS: Might wanna look into a piano repair man too. :noid

Oh don't worry. You'll find out when all the brail is sanded off, the seeing eye dog goes blind, and the piano explodes.

Come on Bosco. It just doesn't matter at all.

Yes thanks for postings all. Some have done well in none perk type planes. Congrads!
Based on everyone's comments, maybe like baseballs Hall of Fame and steroids if anyone wins a category it should be noted in some way that they used an easy mode type plane (perk type plane).
I am saying to distinguish in some way those that win such a category that are "skilled challenged" from the pilots with real skill. Yes it is possible for a good pilot to win this in an easy mode plane. I'm just sayin.
-
Maybe by ENY modifying the score points in the same way they modify perks gained?
-
My name was on that page some time ago...flying a P38G almost exclusivley. Its not what you fly...it is how you fly what you are in.
-

True for a bigpart of the planeset... but with some planes it would be exceedingly difficult to get the 5 kills per sortie, 12 kills per hour needed to get all the way to the "top", especially in those lacking firepower. I think of planes like C.202, P40B, Spit I. Doable, but much more difficult than doing it in a Tempest.
-
Spit9 is about as easy as the 16. Try getting it done in the 38.. ;)
-
No plane is easy mode you can put a noob in a 262 or a tempest and hes no more of a threat than in a hurri1.

Well obviously when one calls a plane easy mode it refers to its capabilities when the average run of the mill MA pilot takes handle of it and is able to easily outperform a very high percentage of the populus. Not the two week noob that can barely lift off. So yes, there are planes that are easy mode. And I'd hardly call the Me262 easy mode, I rarely see pilots landing more than 5 kills in it consistently.

Quit being so stuck up b/c your score sucks :P

:O :O :O Yes Bosco, if you consider stuck up to be not caring about score.
-
I have never been anywhere near the top on scores. Hell I can't even controll a CV. LOL
I operate on the "ownage" score. That score existes nowhere but in the heads of other AH pilots. I know and they know when it has occured.
No other score matters.

Wow. Your really taking this serious? I thought I knew you better than this.

I'd argue the 'ownage' score is not really owning anyone so much as knowing you've fought a good fight, and that you know you can take just about anyone in the game to the edge win or lose.
I'd never claim to be a great stick, and I know there are guys in certain birds that will beat me in the old 38G 9 times out of 10. But I'm confident I can give most guys a decent fight in that same 38G.
If I was worried about 'owning' people, I'd fly a lot more hours and probably find a better performing bird. At this stage of the game, I'd rather stick to my old 38G and see how far I can push it in a fight regardless of the other bird I'm fighting. I sure don't win em all but I enjoy that challenge more then just setting it up to 'win'.
And Agent, my experience fighting you says your approach is much the same :)

Bosco, sometimes I don't know if if you are bragging about score or not! And yes you know me well enough to realize that I don't care about score!
-
I was No. 1 in a Hurri II once
Then day 2 of the tour started.
NwBie ;)

Getting #1 in Fighters isn't that difficult.
Getting #1 in Fighters while maintaining a sub-1900 overall rank (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/newscores/pilot.php?selectTour=Tour62&playername=Leviathn&action=1) -- now that's something. ;)
-
Lev.. thats back when people werent logging 2000 kills per tour, playing 17 hours a day. The rank on points part of that stat would be too low to get #1..
-

Somehow I'm ranked in the top 30 (overall) and all i do is die. Sympathy points? :cry

Ahhh the good old times when AH was a better game with fewer dweebs...
NOT
Small comparison of time logged & kills made for tour 62 (the one you are referring to) and tour 110, 4 years later
I compiled hours played (rounded) and kills made for top ten overall rank as well as hour flown & kills made in fighter mode only for top 10 fighters:
I don't see any significant difference...
#1 fighter had 25h in tour 62 and 28h in tour 110.

Yeah, 2005 wasn't the good old days :) More like before ~2001/2002. And I don't know if top 10 anything really will shed light on what things were like back then. There were score mongerers back then too.
-
Yeah, 2005 wasn't the good old days
I think 2005 was the year the good old days finally died - I joined AH that very year. :D
-
So that's what it was! :devil
