Title: Space Sim SW
Post by: Swager on August 23, 2009, 03:03:16 PM
Any hints on some good Space flight SW?  Remember the old game Privateer?  Something like that!  I really enjoyed that game.

Thanks

Swag

I used to play "orbiter, space flight simulator" IMO the best free space flight sim.

Hmm... Ive always wondered if there were really any good space flight sims. Having played Eve Online made ponder if there are any space flight sims in the works. I will try this "Orbiter" sim out! Thanks for the sharing!

I enjoyed Independence War, that was a fun space game. Long gone now though, I don't even think I have the discs anymore.

Freespace 2. There are a watermelon load of good looking mods out for it. Even Star Fox will make an appearance using that engine...eventually.

Quoted for truth.  Nothing is going to beat Orbiter as a space flight sim.   Plus it has a great community - http://www.orbiter-forum.com (http://www.orbiter-forum.com)

If you're looking for space-dueling, I'd look into Free Allegiance. I consider it to be the space-equivalent of AH. Obviously it's futuristic, yet the forces of thrust, rounds impacting, and the occasional bumps are all simulated rather well.

the ultimate elite descendant nowadays is EVE Online.

EVE Online = Excel in space...

Now, if just David Braben and Ian Bell could settle their problems and give the world a true Elite follow-up

The X series of games (X: Beyond the Frontier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X:_Beyond_the_Frontier), X-Tension (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X:_Beyond_the_Frontier#X-Tension), X2: The Threat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X2:_The_Threat), X3: Reunion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X3:_Reunion), and X3: Terran Conflict (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X3:_Terran_Conflict)) are all great sandbox-style space games. The first two are of the "very old" variety that can be rather complex to get a hold of, X2 is a median, and the X3 games are beautiful with both merchant and combat aspects. All of them have their plotlines, but the games mostly revolve around building your fleet and/or empire. Micromanagers rejoice, though it isn't necessarily required.

As a note, the X3 games lost a lot of features (mainly graphical) of the earlier games, such as the "exhaust" trails. Fortunately, there's a Scripts & Modding Forum (http://forum.egosoft.com/viewforum.php?f=94&sid=9bf3f0191cffcdd0e5453a90113eb399) (That's the X3TC one. There's one for X3R and X2 as well.) chocked full of all sorts of add-ons. If you play without any sort of modification, you can upload your game statistics to their server. You losethat ability with mods...but, in my opinion, they really make the game shine.

Wow that orbiter space flight program looks like it has quite a learning curve.

It's got the marketing part, but not the flight part.

I have one I haven't played in awhile called Independence War.

Link http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sim/independencewar/index.html

At the time it had a really great FM for a space game I have'nt played in awhile but I got hours of fun out of it. Might have to go dust it off and play again this week.

I'm Enker, and I am merely a target right now. All those guys do is get the ships that can turn around fastest and have the biggest guns. I don't, I choose the coolest looking ones and die. I am one of the better shots though, thanks to Aces High.
