Title: Benefit of being a fireman at an airshow
Post by: Gary26 on August 23, 2009, 08:33:47 PM
Got the chance to work fire supression at an airshow. Our job was to control grass fires started by the pyrotechnics. At times this had us 50 yards from the runway and hanging out in airshow center and had F22's and F16's flying right over our head.

Im the guy on the left.(Shortbus)

After the show was over we got an escort from the F22 ground crew and got a complete walk through on the F22's fire suppression systems, outer ejection control panels and weapons bay, and missle/bomb capabilities. Very cool cuz nobody was allowed near these aircraft.

The harrier is so loud, i bet your ears were ringing after being that close.

I got to admit it, the F22 is the sexiest aircraft of our modern age by a long way.

Its the loudest aircraft I can think of on approach to land.  Most other jets are at idle or close to it, while the Carolina Lawn Dart is at full power on approach.  Given the amount of security they put up around the Raptor at air shows, I'm surprised they let you take that up-close photography.  Cool pics!

That Harrier is a privately owned Sea Harrier.  I think it's the only privately owned Harrier out there.  Former Royal Navy bird

F-22 looks so fake with that skin.  As if you had it done on photo shop.  Never really seen on but i must say it is smaller than i thought.

Have you ever heard a VC-10 take off? Those things are louder, on landing they are almost as loud especially if they have to throttle up just before starting to flare the touchdown. Quite awesome noise anywhere within Brize Norton when those things are powered up.

The Bird is true greatness, but lets not overlook the truly kickass quadcab 4x4 w/ the sweet skin.   :salute

I don't think anything beats a B-1 on take off except say an SR71 as far as pounding in your body cavity loud.  Used to work on the radar on those a few years back, kind of miss it now.

F-22 sure is smurfy.  Neat pictures of it, but it is an undeniably ugly aircraft.

Who do you know there and where are you from.

I'm from Cherry Valley, I used to live in SV, my wife is from there. I used to quite a few of the guys, mind you that was 15 years ago.  I see the Snap On dealer often, there are probably a few more as well, just not sure if they are still doing the fireman thing anymore.

Anyhow, nice pics ya got, probably pretty nice having front row seats and not having to worry about parking  :x

I would love to hear the blackbird on takeoff, i bet that rattles a few rib cages.
