Title: Going to Ft Sill for 2 weeks
Post by: Swager on August 27, 2009, 08:35:33 PM: I get to go to Ft Sill for 2 weeks. First time in OK. I heard the Lawton area is mallow.

I have a friend in Chickasha which is about 35 miles north.

Lawton is boring

there's an air force range about 15 miles west of the base proper... if you hear some jets overhead you might be able to cruise out there and see some close air support training. You can get within about a mile or so of the range on public roads.

Post by: eagl on August 27, 2009, 09:15:27 PM: If you get bored you'll end up driving up to Oklahoma City. It's only about 1.5 hrs North of Lawton, lots more to do there though.

Advice - stay away from military hangouts in OKC. Not that there's anything wrong with them really, but if you're gonna take the effort to go out, see something different than the same-old.

Post by: AKP on August 27, 2009, 10:00:13 PM: I have lived in OKC and in Wichita Falls... trust me, go to OKC. While you are there, visit the Memorial from the bombing of the Federal Building. It's a very moving experience. I tear up every time I go.

Head to Brick Town and check out the bars, restaurants, and the nightlife. Oh, the Bass Pro Shop is right there too :x If you are lucky, one of the nations may be holding a pow-wow while you are there. If they are, dont miss it! They welcome visitors... you will see a lot of Vets at them too.

TONS to do in OKC, especially for a visitor... But Lawton, yeah... its pretty dead.

Its pretty much like any small town right next to an isolated Army base.....rathole with its biggest attractions being dive bars and low end stripper clubs...... if you have time and want to venture OKC is definitely worth the drive.

LOL I can remember getting a weekend pass and going to the mall in Lawton and thinking WTF we have bigger 7/11s than this mall.

Old and ugly hookers, muggers and plain nasty folk. Rest of the town was hum-drum. Not to mention the heat, humidity, tornadoes, bugs and huge cockroaches. Ft. Sill has the Artillery museum there...it has the infamous "Atomic Annie"....I believe the only cannon that fired a nuclear warhead. Have fun.
