Title: Water textures
Post by: USRanger on August 30, 2009, 07:43:37 PM
Water textures now work under the .bmps called wntt001 through wntt0012, so it is now possible to have up to 12 underwater textures on one terrain.  If you place a new water texture in your texsrc folder and name it wntt0001, when you "paint" your water using grass(nt0001) you will see this new underwater texture.  Want to add another underwater texture?  Place a second .bmp in your texsrc and call it wntt0002.  Now when you paint your water with forrest(ntt0002)  you will see the second water texture you placed in there.  Repeat up to wntt0012 if desired.  Should make for some really neat coral reefs & such.

Can you make some artificial reefs of sunken carriers?

:lol It's possible with the tools we have now.

I hope they get this "Resource Build Failed" error thing taken care of soon so I can actually make a terrain. :(

I have been able to create 2 working test terrains.
They are basic with 1 or 2 fields or a field and a port as with one of them.
Clip board map tool worked and the build worked.

I'll get the source files and the .res file loaded up on my file server shortly
if you want to take a look at them.

The two files are here.

Each file has a .res file as well as the terrain source files, let me know if you have any problems with them or
building them from source.

Haha that's awesome Ranger.  Would be cool to have it only partially submerged so someone that's AFK while NOE becomes DOA.  :devil

Thanks midi, but I'm still getting a Resource Build Fail error, even with yours.  Dangit.

I uninstalled the Editor and did a fresh re-install.  I then put only midi's (working) .res in my ahterrain folder, opened it up in the Editor, saw it was there & fine, hit build and....same error.  Ugh.

interesting....

I have deleted the source files in the editor folder and then unzipped the ones I gave you and rebuilt them
no problems.

Which one did you try?  the "land.zip" file is a smaller terrain 64 x 64, and the other is like it's name implies 512 x 512

lemme know.

Ranger, I've been looking into this and I believe that the memory requirements to build the res are too huge to run on your box.  I'll be looking at optimizing the build process so that it's not so memory intensive.  Bear with us.

Sudz,
I have the same processor as him and have done some major building in the T.E. without any errors.

I am running 3 gigs of ram and Vista 32-bit tho, have a spare gig of ram Ranger?

I just upgraded from 2 gigs of pc4200 to 4 gigs of pc5300.  Still getting the Resource Build Fail error.  I hate to think I just wasted $120 and a 60 mile round trip for nothing. :(
What else could it be?  Strip has the same processor with 3 gigs and the TE works fine for him. My PC is only 2 years old, not ancient.  This is gonna drive me crazy.

I got the dreaded resource build error finally, weird part was I tried the same action again and it worked.

I have noticed that you (USRanger), MrMidi and Greebo all use Windows XP, I use Vista.

Try it in compatibility mode......windows ME/2000 or something?

I use Vista and XP..2 seperate machines.

My XP machine will build up to a 128 size terrain fine, but if I try a 256 or 512 I get the Error.

Vist machine has no problems.

I am also running an XP machine and get the resource build error. Was thinking about getting more memory but if it didn't help USranger I think I will hold off a bit.

IT WORKED!

I just successfully built a terrain.  After I installed the RAM, I fired up the TE and got the ol' error.  I posted here, then, not content to give up, gave it another shot.  It worked!  Three terrains actually.  I even built the New512 terrain midi sent me.  It's a 512x512 terrain.  I'm fearful to try to update one of my terrains with all the custom stuff added, don't want to jinx it. :lol  It appears the extra RAM did the trick.  I've built, deleted & rebuilt the new512 terrain 3 times now, no error.  Ah screw it, I'll go try on of my terrains now(with loads of goodies).  Might as well push the limits and see what happens.  Will report back (crosses fingers and toes).

It failed almost immediately trying to build a terrain with custom terrain tiles & objects.

Looks like I'm stuck with *gasp* default everything for now.  I'm just happy I was able to build one though.  My monitor was looking worried it was gonna catch a left hook if it didn't.

I was able to build my Joust terrain just now that contains a custom field and one custom terrain texture.  Tried on some of my more-custom terrains & still get the mighty FAIL.  It's progress though.

you can see it better from a litte higher up as theres still water over it but this was as shallow as i could get the water without turning it into land.
picture is kinda small but you can still see it good.
