I saw this in another thread, about winter, spring, summer fall.. etc.
I think it would be another effect of realism if HTC made like each season on its MA terrain. So, you'd never be fighting in the same type of terrain (I still like our current terrain though, don't get me wrong, and it wouldn't make any difference if HTC decided against it.) but it would be cool to have like a fall terrain, and then of course, a winter terrain, and... Spring/Summer? Same?
Just a guess, but I think it would completely change the aspect of how you play the game and what not, since everything is always fresh.
Just an idea, and I'm clueless as of how the community would like it, but I think it's cool.

HT wouldn't allow it because it consists of custom terrain and they can't afford to have a certain MA map crash someones computer because they can't run a certain terrain for whatever reason.
But I would love it if one day it could happen...
-
I thought making it winter was just changing the premade tiles to snowy instead of grassy. Climb to 20K and look at mountains, they are snow capped.
-
Well maybe with the new terrain its different but I know for a fact every time it was brought up before the update, the custom tile was always the issue.
-
Custom tiles were allowed, they were used a lot in the special events arena. The bigger problem was the lack of maps being made to utilize them.
The new terrain editor is indifferent to new terrain tiles, you can take the same terrain and make it look vastly different. Its a simple matter of changing the tiles from winter to summer and rebuilding the .res file. The tiles tell the editor whats going to be drawn where, ie grass, farm, or in this case snow etc. You can take a terrain from winter to summer in five minutes once the tiles are made.....

Yes custom tiles are always allowed, but not in the MA...

I don't know. Sounds kinda' cool to me.

1) editing terrain textures
Yes
Wrong, custom tiles were allowed in MA terrains.
The reason you never saw any was the lack of people willing to assemble a MA terrain.

One of the thing we have added in this version is the ability to select tile sets from the host. I.E. Right now we have only 2 tile sets, but just by changing 1 host setting we could have Europe tile set on Ndisles. So changing seasons is just creating a different tile set and shipping it with a release.

So whats stopping you? :D

Do you think that it would have any negative effect on the frame rates, or perhaps the game itself?
-
Nope. We already have 2 tilesets for the new terrains, Pacific and Europe. What would changed would be the file size for each terrain. Basically you are just duping the tiles and creating a new set. So you would have Pacific (default is probably summer), Pacific Winter, Europe, Europe Winter.
Wouldn't really effect frame rates at all. Well unless somebody who created the new file set loaded it up with tons and tons of objects.
Otherwise what is probably holding them back is just the time necessary for creating new tiles, testing, them, etc. Right now I think they have bigger fish to fry like getting all the bugs out of 2.14 and out of the Terrain Editor for 2.14. After that probably expect to see some more tilesets.

Well, like Europe fall could turn the leaves a reddish-brown. Be something that'd always keep the game fresh. Ya know?

I posted this in the TE board "What's allowed" thread, but haven't received a response. Has there been any decision on what degree of customization will be allowed for MA terrains under the new system? Will it be restricted to new terrain tiles, or will things be opened up more with custom objects?

Do you think that player edited terrains turned into fall... etc, would be allowed in-game?

Doubtful, most likely the only custom features will be tiles, both underwater and land.

Yes but you will have a problem getting the source files for each terrain. You cant take a .res and reverse engineer the files that the T.E. needs. Which is understandable for reasons I wont discuss here.

Unless there is a very very large compelling reason to have a custom object it would not be alowed. And even then if the reason was so compelling we would add it to the standard shapes.
So the answer to you question is most likely no.
Also the tile sets do not add to terrain size, but rather the size of the main game download.
