Title: Salmonella poisoning
Post by: Swoop on August 31, 2009, 04:25:41 PM
Any ever had it?

Cos I think I've managed to give myself it.....

Why is it I feel sooooo much better for half an hour or so after throwing up and can someone please gimme a tip that'll make me throw up every half hour or so?  I've had only water all weekend, there's nothing left in there but water, chucking is easy and quite enjoyable given that I know I'll be feeling almost fine for a while afterwards.

If it wasn't a sodding bank holiday today I'd have been down the docs begging for activated charcoal tablets, guess where I'm going first thing in the morning.  If I'm still alive......

If you can hold down water you don't have it.

Harden up :D

That's my point, I can't.   I'm just not chucking it back again quick enough to feel better.

Run laps until you throw up.

Do you have fever? If not then it is highly unlikely you have salmonella poisoning.

Ouch, never had it but mom did a few years ago.  I feel for ya Swoop.  I know it won't help, but maybe call nurse Vodka and make an appointment with doctor Whiskey to see if you can get a prescription for some Tequila.

I had salmonella a few years ago from some undercooked chicken at a wedding reception.  It usually takes about a day to two days to really set in, so whatever you ate just before getting sick probably wasn't  what caused your illness.  If you are well enough to sit at the computer and type, you probably don't have salmonella.  I didn't have health insurance at the time that I got sick, so I just tried to ride it out.  I slept on the floor of my bathroom for a week straight.  I couldn't afford to be any farther from either the toilet or trash can.  If you have to throw up, you'd better sit down first.  I slept as much as I could, wrapped up in towels because I was running a very very high fever and freezing my butt off.  At some point I thought that I might die, but then I thought that if I did, at least I'd get to stop the constant vomiting and diarrehea.  At some point I managed over several hours to crawl into the kitchen and got a piece of ice and ate it. I threw it back up immediately, still in frozen chunks. I ended up pulling through after about a week.

I'd guess that you probably don't have salmonella, but that you probably do have some other type of foodborne illness.  They're surprisingly common.  Reguardless, get yourself to a doctor as soon as possible, you can get badly dehydrated easily.

^ sounds like what I had. Bucket in front of the dunny was the optimal configuration.

Yeah, salmonella "opens the sluices at both ends."

Bear in mind your appetite will go into hyperdrive once you recover. Whole boxes of cereal, furniture, small children all fair game.

Swoop drink Gatorade or even Pedialyte.   Replace the electrolytes first, then move to water.   Pedialyte is for toddlers, doesn't taste as good as Gatorade, but has more electrolytes.

I do the same thing when I happen to get real sea sick (usually if I've been off the water for a long time). And chow down on saltines. Even if you throw it up right away, your body at least gets a little bit while it can.  It makes all the difference. Puking up water feels a lot better than dry heaving too.  Falling asleep as much as possible helps too.

diarlyte (I think that's how it's spelled) packets of powder to add to water for rehydration. Go the the chemist and ask for Kaolin mixture. Can get it without prescription, settles the stomach down and stops the poops.

Yup your biggest fear is becoming dehydrated.

I know a little about meat. I was in that business for about 20 years.

Did you know the number one cause of salmonella is vegetables? Folks clean a chicken on the countertop then do not clean the countertop well enough before making a salad there. The chicken is cooked but the salad is not. Also when you get groceries be sure the kid sacking it up keeps the meat and other items seperate.

Most folks who think they have salmonella or food poisoning actually have some other cause for their nausea.
