So I finally got off my lazy bum and swapped my 7900gs in for my 9800gr that "died"...doesnt show up in device manager either. Is it possible that something fried on the PCI-E slot itself? If so, it's new computer time...and SLI 9800gt's :)

Bueller? can this happen without thrashing a system. everything else works fine. Just haven't played a graphical game in about 2 months. Kinda getting itchy.

How are you viewing if it's showing up or not? Onboard video?

Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device manger...just shows the onboard video card. 6150LE or some equal crap like that. Figured my 9800gt died on me, but after installing the spare and getting the newest drivers for it, still running on Mobo video.

Try resetting the BIOS and then download latest update before giving up on the card or the mobo.

How do I go about resetting the bios on an "off the shelf" system? pull out the CMOS battery and let it sit for a bit, then pop it back in and see what happens?

You need to turn off the "ONBOARD" video within the BIOS. Check your system maker for the way to get into the BIOS. It maybe the "DEL" "F1" or maybe the "ESC" keys when the system boots.

I don't know if that's such a good idea. He already mentioned the video card is not showing in the Device Manager. Even with onboard video enabled his video card should still be detected and installed by Windows.

Thanks Dehholm, TD, and others for the advice. Never had a problem with "plug and play" video cards, but I know my 7900gs is still good. But I dont think it's a setting issue, as the comp has been thrrough ad 7900 and a 9800, I'd like to think the cards aren't dead. being a gutted HP box, I'm open to suggestions.

Have you tried flashing the BIOS with the latest version for your motherboard?

did you use the cd to download the drivers? and was it the right cd. I bought the 9800 gt about 3 weeks ago and it had to wrong cd, so drivers wouldnt work. i had to d/l directly from nvidia. if your cd says gdrv-175.16b then its the wrong cd. the 9800gt uses a different cd i returned mine for the 9800gtx+ so i dont have the number for the cd anymore. btw all the cd's look the same. also remove and reinstall your card to make sure it's in right. mine wasnt in right the first time I installed it

Drivers are something you don't worry about if the card isn't recognized. I would, however, follow the advice of removing then re-inserting the card. Sometimes those cards don't seat correctly meaning they won't be recognized by the system.

You're basing that on a look in the device manager, right?

On thing I have found in the past is that some devices don't show in the device manager at all until the proper chipset drivers are loaded for the motherboard. If it were my system, and two different devices weren't showing in the same type of slot, I'd be inclined to perform a new installation of Windows into a different directory, preferably on another drive if at all possible, and then install the chipset drivers for the motherboard onto the newly installed installation, then see if the card shows up.
If yes, then it's a most likely that that the orginal Windows installation has some sort of corruption.
If no, it's probably some sort of hardware issue, requiring a new motherboard.
