Krusty tutorial is very good, well thought out. Its actually fun to skin planes...yet stressful at some points.

Hey got a question for someone who's a good skinner, i read on krusty's tutorial that its best to have a 1024x1024 sized skin to start out with, but i cant find any default ah2 skins that are that size they are all 512x512 and i dont really get how to convert it to 1024x1024,so plz help me out a bit.

You need to have texture size set to 1024 and install the hires texture pack.
BTW if you can't figure out how to resize an image, you're going to have a lot of trouble trying to make a skin. Not trying to be rude, just letting you know.

i know how to resize an image in paint but what im asking is do i need it to be 1024x1024 SIZE not TEXTURE?

Heya bravoa,
The skin will need to be made at 1024x1024. If you currently arent running the HiRes texture Package then you can just manually resize the 512 to 1024. It will have some blur to it, but we do it all the time on old models. If you are running HiRex Textures, then you will get the default as a 1024x1024 already.

He's got an M-8 pictured, which has 512x512 .bmps(it's old). So, should he bother making it 1024x1024 to skin and then shrink it? I never have with the older models like the M-8. Would he really gain any detail by enlarging, skinning, then shrinking again?
Btw, look where the .50 cal is on the M-8 in the pic. Different model, or is something not right with our in-game model?

Hola Lord Ranger,
Yep! It has to be resized to 1024x1024. All skin submissions must be in 1024x1024 size. So he would not shrink it back to 512. However, reading your comment, I take it as you have submitted 512's before. I thought this was a noGo as all skin submissions must be able to become part of the HiResTexPackage. Hence the 1024 standard.

Nah, no submissions by me, just skins for H2H and now offline missions. I thought you guys meant 1024x1024 as a general skinning rule(even for the old models). Makes sense though for submissions' sake.

i have hires textures on but i get 512?maybe i need to download a new one?

Neg bravoa.
If you have the hiRes installed just check your video settings for the game to ensure they are set for 1024. If your video settings are set for 1024 and you have the hiRes installed, then the HTC front end is force feeding you the graphic in 512. That means you will HAVE to convert the 512 graphic to 1024. This means the details WILL be blown up and pixelated. A little more work on your end as a skinner, but completely do-able :)
Just remember, at the end of your work, the graphic must be submitted as a 1024x1024 graphic. So resize the 512 pic to 1024. Redraw the panel lines, rivets. Repaint the model. Weather it until you feel the model is complete. Submit it as an 8bit indexed bitmap at 1024x1024. Somebody else jump in here if I am being confusing.

Try this site. I generally just use this for a base for info (Squad, FG, BG ect ect) , then google, or library for the real pictures.

Uh.. I would be REAL careful with some of those profiles.
Post what type of plane you are working on and I can help get you some info.
Also, that M8 skin is a real bear to work on. I started one a few months ago and gave it up. Try a "normal" plane first to get the feel of it, or one of the new tanks like a Firefly. Ostwind, WW or T34/85.

I just use mostly the squadron info. and thats all I suggest from there.

thx copr
