Title: My wireless router is driving me crazy!!
Post by: Selino631 on September 07, 2009, 11:34:39 AM
I have a Netgear wireless router and have had no problems with it until last night. It just randomly started making a high pitch buzz and it wont stop. if i unplug 1 of my 3 ethernet cables it'll stop for about 5 seconds then it startes up again. I even unpluged it and went to bed, woke up this morning and pluged it in and it keeps on going! anybody know what could be causing this?

Sounds permanent to me. The sound probably went away as the router assessed what was disconnected then continued its duty of supplying Internet access to all ethernet ports.

I don't have an inexpensive solution. My idea would be to buy a new router.

If you have a spare power adapter with the right voltage and enough amps, try using that.  I had 2 routers (one dlink and one linksys) that I was sure had died, but it turned out that the power adapters had gone bad.  A buzzing in electronics often means power conversion has gone bad and that could mean either something in the router has gone poof, or the power supply is not producing the right voltage or not enough current.

Depends on the model, but overall Linksys is better than any other...reliability, upkeep, security. I've heard some issues with the new 802.11N series routers but the 802.11B/G still being sold are solid.

I know a few people who have this:

And they love it.

This is probably the best G router still available:

But then I'm biased, I have one as do several of my geek buddies who refuse to upgrade to N for now.

Netgear is on the about the same level as D-Link...ok but you can do better and less secure. Linksys is (was?) made by Cisco.

Linksys are made by Cisco. It's all I use.

The other advantage is that the Linksys router's firmware can be flashed to the Linux-based, open-source DDWRT software.

My netgear also made a high pitch sound that was hard to hear at times, but very annoying.  Replacing the power supply won't solve the problem, as the noise will still be present.  I threw the unit away and replaced it with one made by Linksys.

I use a WRT54GL v1.1 with HyperWRT+Thibor. No problems at all and much better reliability and transmission and (especially) receiving power over the standard firmware. I had previosly used it and a late-model WRT65G to create a cheap alternative to using a wireless adapter for my xBox. :) Due to the sheer number of wireless devices here, I eventually ran a 65ft shielded cable across the house instead.
