Title: Sand Texture
Post by: USRanger on September 08, 2009, 08:19:21 PM
Here's a different Beach texture if anyone would like it.  It's in .jpg form so you'll have to convert it.  I prefer my beaches to look not as smooth as the default. Blends in nice with the sandy grass too.

Gives you beaches like this:

I like that, much whiter than the default sand. I may adjust it even further.

As a terrain texture, I wouldn't use it for anything but beaches, as the scaling would not be right (unless you wanted 50 ft mounds of sand) but I like the way it comes out using just slivers of it for beachline.

I've reworked the .bmp so that the texture it contains is a quarter size od what it was before.  Looks more to scale on the terrain.  Here's the .jpg:

Gives you a beach like this.  I really like what it does to the shallows.

I think that the underwater sand shouldn't be the exact same color as the beach sand, so I threw together an underwater wntt0010 tile.  Gives it a bluish tint.  Here's the .jpg:

Which will give you this:

We almost need a sand that's sort of darker for the very edge of the shoreline that looks wet.

Not bad, but wet sand at this scale would probably look much smoother and more uniform in color. Also more of a darker tan than brown.

I actually took Ranger's updated version of the beach texture, added a new layer which I filled in with brown and adjusted the transparency. Came across almost PERFECT.

The only problem is that it would only look right as a VERY narrow strip right at the shoreline, but the grndtype file just doesn't have a high enough resolution to do it right (that's my main complaint with the new terrain setup. You can do these AMAZING shorelines, but the transitions between terrain types are much blockier). Making it a blended terrain with the normal beach and only part of it on land seems to make for a good effect, tho:

I don't like the abrupt jump I get between the "river" color (which I'm using here to represent shallow water) and the ocean. Too abrupt.

The problem is with only four colors to work with (ocean, two intermediate colors, and then river) it doesn't flow as nicely.

Now what would be cool is if the waterc.bmp was the ACTUAL water colors, then you could literally paint it in waterc EXACTLY how you wanted it to appear in the the game, rather than it being color-coded.

Imagine the computing power that would require...

A few more colors or a blending zone would be nice, perhaps better resolution on the elev file too.

On the terrain I just finished updating (but can't build :() I stayed with the default sand, but went with this underwater sand texture (wntt0010).

The jpg.:

That looks great, throw in a couple custom cement bunkers with artillery and it would be fantastic.

So are we able to change the colors of our default sand in game? Or is that dependant on the terrain itself?

Terrain itself.

Thanks fellas.  I like to post the actual tile so people can use em if they so choose.  I've got a ton of textures and I've been thinking about starting a texture sharing thread to keep em all in one place.
