Im not really to sure what the difference is. take the P-51D, this has 2 options 4x50 cal m2 270rpg and 2x50 cal m2 400rpg or 2x50 cal m2 500rpg and 2x50 cal m2 400rpg. Is one option for fighter and one for attacker or are they equal for both and its just personal preference ??? anyone help me ???

Just personal preference.
The mode you are selecting for scoring purposes is independent from actual weapon selection.
Please note that there is no gain in performance if you take the 4 gun package in a P-51D, but a quite substantial reduction in firepower. The ammo count may be about the same, but you have less firepower per second.
You can also always take the P-51B instead of the 51D if you want to fly with 4 guns only. - It's ENY of 20 gives you much more perks per kill as the 51D's ENY of 8.

The other (minor) consideration is duration of your firepower. With the 6 gun package, you are down to 2 guns sooner than with the 4 gun package. All-in-all, though, if you're going to fly 4 guns, might as well take the B.
